Mastermind says that if all of the people that plan to buy his new record do so at the same time, he could garner a chart-topper.
With record sales in the toilet, James Murphy thinks he has a chance to lay claim to the top of the charts.
Murphy's LCD Soundsystem has a new album, Sound of Silver, hitting stores March 20, and he says the time is right for electroclash to go No. 1.
In a series of posts on his Web site's message boards, Murphy says he did the math and compared total sales of LCD's self-titled debut (60,559 copies to date) with the No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 chart last week, the soundtrack for Dreamgirls, which sold a paltry 60,064 copies last week.
"If everyone who bought the first record bought [Sound of Silver] the week it's released, then we're totally [No.] 1," Murphy wrote. "I'm sure some people who bought the old record have now moved on to extreme noise or something, but maybe there are enough new people to make up for it! Anyway, it's a dream, and I'll be able to move on to my other life as a mailman after that because it would be all downhill from there for me."
The goal of chart-topping sales would be to get a song on modern rock radio, Murphy wrote.
"If we could figure out a way to have the people who'd buy it anyway because they want it to do it all at once, then I could go to radio stations and say, 'Can you please play [new single] "North American Scum" because it's on a top 40 record' and see what they say. I mean, no 'modern rock' station in the US is going to play a song like that, but at least I want them to say to my face 'No, because it's retarded' rather than what I usually hear, which is 'Duuuuude! I LOOOOOOVE your band, man! "Daft Punk Is Losing Its Edge" is my FAVORITE SONG!! but I just can't because my hands are tied here to only play Hinder and Evanescence' etc. etc."
LCD Soundsystem is slated to play the second day of the three-day Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival, which takes place April 27-29 in Indio, California. Prior to that, the group will tour Europe for most of March.
