Orthodox reggae rapper started career with JDub Records but left as he rose to stardom; terms of settlement undisclosed.
Matisyahu and JDub Records have settled their dispute over the reggae rapper's decision to end his management contract last year, avoiding a protracted court battle.
The Orthodox Judaic artist was the founding talent of the label and management company when Aaron Bisman started it five years ago in New York City. JDub shepherded the reggae rapper's career as word spread about his unique style and raucous live shows.
But last March, just prior to the release of his major label studio debut, Youth, Matisyahu--real name Matthew Miller--called Bisman while on tour to tell him that his services were no longer required.
"He said, 'I don't know if you guys are old enough or have enough experience,'" Bisman told the New York Times at the time. "This is the music business, I guess. There has to be some sort of legal action."
But in an e-mail statement sent out yesterday, JDub said it has resolved the matter out of court.
"JDub Records and Matisyahu are pleased to announce that they have amicably resolved all disputes between them," the parties said in the statement. "Although they have decided to terminate their business relationship, they wish each other well in the future."
JDub's remaining artists include Balkan Beat Box, SoCalled, and Golem.
