Legendary trio confirms rumors that it will open awards telecast; Baez, Stevie Wonder, Etheridge, Latifah, Chris Rock, and Jennifer Hudson added as presenters.
The worst-kept secret in music became official today, as the Recording Academy announced that the Police are set to reunite for a performance at the Grammy Awards, 23 years after they split.
The legendary trio--Sting, drummer Stewart Copeland, and guitarist Andy Summers--will open the awards show telecast at 8 p.m. ET/PT on February 11 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. The group, which won five Grammys in its career, will reportedly play either "Every Breath You Take," "Message in a Bottle," or "Roxanne."
It will be the group's first performance together since its 2003 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and if subsequent rumors are also true, the band then will embark on its first extensive tour since it broke up in 1984. That tour could include several major music festivals, as stops at both Coachella in April and the UK's Glastonbury Festival in June have been reported.
The Police disbanded in 1984 under less-than-amicable circumstances as Sting sought to pursue a solo career. The band recorded five studio albums over its seven-year career, scoring huge hits with songs like "Roxanne," "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic," "Spirits in the Material World," "Wrapped Around Your Finger," and "Every Breath You Take," which won the 1983 Grammy for song of the year.
The reunion will come 30 years to the month that the band released its first single, "Fall Out."
The Recording Academy also added to the list of Grammy presenters, including current Lifetime Achievement Award honoree Joan Baez, legendary singer Stevie Wonder, rocker Melissa Etheridge, rapper-actress Queen Latifah, comedian Chris Rock, and former Americal Idol finalist and Dreamgirls star Jennifer Hudson.
Previously announced performers include Christina Aguilera, Beyonce, Mary J. Blige, the Dixie Chicks, Gnarls Barkley, John Legend, Ludacris, John Mayer, Corinne Bailey Rae, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Justin Timberlake (solo performance and with the winner of the "My Grammy Moment" competition), and Carrie Underwood.
