Seattle-based rockers and late hip-hop producer land the top awards at indie-centric event in NYC.

Band of Horses and the late J Dilla were the big winners at the Plug 2007 Independent Music Awards Show Saturday in New York City, a decidedly less pomp-and-circumstance affair than the Grammy Awards the next night in Los Angeles.

Band of Horses Band of Horses

Seattle-based Band of Horses snagged album of the year and Americana album of the year for their Sub Pop debut, Everything All the Time, as well as song of the year for their track "The Funeral."

Jay Dee/J Dilla, the acclaimed hip-hop producer who died last February due to complications from lupus, nabbed the artist of the year award, as well as record producer of the year. Dilla released the album Donuts just prior to his death, and the posthumous The Shining hit stores several months later.

UK buzz band Arctic Monkeys claimed new artist of the year honors, Neko Case won for top female artist, and Sufjan Stevens landed the award for top male artist.

Host David Cross Host David Cross

Yo La Tengo's I Am Not Afraid of You and I Will Beat Your Ass took home the prize for indie rock album of the year.

The event, which was hosted by comedian David Cross, featured performances from Tokyo Police Club, Deerhoof, El-P, Silversun Pickups, and former Pavement frontman Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks.

Band of Horses Band of Horses

Seattle, WA's Band of Horses plays dense, aching mid-tempo indie rock reminiscent of Neil Young & Crazy Horse. Formed in 2004 by multi-instrumentalists Ben Bridwell and Matthew Brooke out of the ashes of former incarnation Carissa's Wierd, the group caught the attention of Sub Pop during a show with friends and future lablemates Iron & Wine. The...

Frequently and rightly placed in the same context as DJ Premier, Pete Rock, and Kanye West, Jay Dee built and sustained a high standing as a producer's producer while maintaining a low profile. When Pharrell Williams appeared on BET's 106 & Park in 2004, he excitedly declared that Jay Dee was his favorite producer and told an audibly stumped...

Arctic Monkeys Arctic Monkeys

Citing influences such as the Jam, the Clash, and the Smiths, Arctic Monkeys create a vibrant punk-inspired sound well suited for Britpop and alternative rock fans alike. Alex Turner (vocals/guitar), Jamie Cook (guitar), Andy Nicholson (bass), and Matt Helders (drums) formed Arctic Monkeys in Sheffield, England, in 2003. A year prior, Turner and...

Sufjan Stevens Sufjan Stevens

A singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, Sufjan Stevens started his venture in the music world as a member of Marzuki, a folk-rock band based in Holland, MI. Following the release of two full-length albums with the group, Stevens decided to go solo in late 1999, investing fully in a career that was waiting to shine by itself. During...

Neko Case Neko Case

Alternative country singer/songwriter Neko Case won a steadily growing cult audience for her smoky, sophisticated vocals and the downcast beauty of her music. Born in Alexandria, VA, Case moved around often as a child, spending the largest part of her youth in Tacoma, WA. She left her parents at age 15, and three years later she started playing...

Yo La Tengo Yo La Tengo

Yo La Tengo was in many respects the quintessential critics' band: in addition to its adventurous eclecticism, defiant independence, and restless creative ambition -- three qualities that virtually guarantee music press acclaim -- the group's frontman, Ira Kaplan, even tenured as a rock scribe prior to finding success as a performer. So...

Neko Case
Neko Case hasn't had much need to prove her credentials as a major artist since making her solo debut with 1997's The Virginian, but she's been refining her skills in the recording studio on each subsequent release, and with 2006's Fox Confessor Brings the Flood she's fashioned an album that can cautiously be called a masterpiece. As always,...
