Modest Mouse, Mogwai, Yo La Tengo, Patti Smith, Cat Power, Joanna Newsom, Built to Spill, and Band of Horses to play two-weekend UK festival.

Known for putting the lineup-making power in the hands of acclaimed artists, UK music festival All Tomorrow's Parties has taken a slightly different approach this time around, at least for a portion of the two-weekend event.

All Tomorrow's Parties All Tomorrow's Parties

The first weekend, set for April 27-29 in Somerset, will be curated by Aussie trio Dirty Three, who picked Nick Cave as its headliner, in addition to 36 other bands, including Cat Power, Spiritualized, Joanna Newsom, Einsturzende Neubauten, and The Scientists, among others.

The lineup selection for the second weekend, which will be held May 18-20 at the same location in Somerset, was split between the event's organizers and its fans. Those fans have picked Modest Mouse, Apples in Stereo, Explosions in the Sky, Mogwai, and Yo La Tengo, among others, while the organizers chose a list of bands that includes Built to Spill, Sparklehorse, Echo & The Bunnymen, Brightblack Morninglight, Grizzly Bear, Band of Horses, and Patti Smith.

Weekend tickets range from £120 ($235) to £140 ($275) depending on the type of accommodation, as all attendees stay in chalets on the festival grounds.

Dirty Three Dirty Three

Melancholy instrumental trio Dirty Three formed in Melbourne, Australia in 1992, led by classically-trained violinist Warren Ellis, who began writing and performing music for art openings and plays and also tenured in the groups Blackeyed Susans, Paranoid and the Nursing Mothers. After enlisting Blackeyed Susans' guitarist Mick Turner and...

Modest Mouse Modest Mouse

Issaquah, WA, indie rock trio Modest Mouse was formed in 1993 by vocalist/guitarist Isaac Brock, bassist Eric Judy, and drummer Jeremiah Green. After honing their muscular sound in "The Shed" -- a makeshift practice space built by Brock on the land next to his mother's trailer -- Modest Mouse entered Calvin Johnson's Dub Narcotic Studios to cut...

Mogwai Mogwai

The cosmic post-rock band Mogwai was formed in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1996 by guitarist/vocalist Stuart Braithwaite, guitarist Dominic Aitchison, and drummer Martin Bulloch, longtime friends with the goal of creating "serious guitar music." Toward that end they added another guitarist, John Cummings, before debuting in March 1996 with the single...

Cat Power Cat Power

Cat Power was the alias of Chan Marshall, a Southern-bred singer/songwriter whose father, Charlie, was an itinerant pianist. After dropping out of high school, Marshall found herself in New York; performing under the name Cat Power, she was booked as the opening act for Liz Phair, where she met Sonic Youth drummer Steve Shelley and Two Dollar...

Built to Spill Built to Spill

Built to Spill were one of the most popular indie rock acts of the '90s, finding the middle ground between postmodern, Pavement-style pop and the loose, spacious jamming of Neil Young. From the outset, the band was a vehicle for singer/songwriter/guitarist Doug Martsch, who revived the concept of the indie guitar hero just as Dinosaur Jr.'s J...

Yo La Tengo Yo La Tengo

Yo La Tengo was in many respects the quintessential critics' band: in addition to its adventurous eclecticism, defiant independence, and restless creative ambition -- three qualities that virtually guarantee music press acclaim -- the group's frontman, Ira Kaplan, even tenured as a rock scribe prior to finding success as a performer. So...

Patti Smith

Punk rock's poet laureate, Patti Smith ranks among the most influential female rock & rollers of all time. Ambitious, unconventional, and challenging, Smith's music was hailed as the most exciting fusion of rock and poetry since Bob Dylan's heyday. If that hybrid remained distinctly uncommercial for much of her career, it wasn't a statement...

Band of Horses Band of Horses

Seattle, WA's Band of Horses plays dense, aching mid-tempo indie rock reminiscent of Neil Young & Crazy Horse. Formed in 2004 by multi-instrumentalists Ben Bridwell and Matthew Brooke out of the ashes of former incarnation Carissa's Wierd, the group caught the attention of Sub Pop during a show with friends and future lablemates Iron & Wine. The...

Possibly the most accessible yet sophisticated album Mogwai has released, Mr. Beast strips away most of the electronic embellishment of their recent work in favor of a back-to-basics sound that returns to and expands on the approach they pioneered on Young Team.
