Cornell quits Audioslave, cites clash

Singer confirms widespread reports of a breakup, saying group had "irresolvable personality conflicts."

Last month's announcement that Rage Against the Machine was reuniting for Coachella served as a pretty clear indication that Audioslave--three original Rage members and former Soundgarden singer Chris Cornell--was history.

Cornell confirmed that today, saying that he was leaving the group, citing "irresolvable personality conflicts as well as musical differences."

Cornell, 42, who rose to fame with defunct Seattle rock group Soundgarden, hopes to reignite his solo career with the May 1 release of Carry On, his second solo album.

"Due to irresolvable personality conflicts as well as musical differences, I am permanently leaving the band Audioslave. I wish the other three members nothing but the best in all of their future endeavors," Cornell said in a statement.

Fellow Audioslave members Tom Morello, Tim Commerford, and Brad Wilk have reunited with Rage frontman Zack de la Rocha for an April 29 performance at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in Indio, California. The politically minded band's plans beyond this show are unknown.

Audioslave formed in 2001, a year after Rage broke up, and recorded three studio albums. In May 2005, it became the first American band to play an outdoor show in Cuba.

Cornell had previously told Reuters that the band was like a sociology experiment because of the various members' complex relationships with each other. He indicated that a solo existence could be a less stressful option.

"I think the biggest problem with people surviving in a band and getting along and appreciating each other is just the fact that for the most part musicians aren't the kind of people who concentrate or worry about what the other guy thinks," he said.

Carry On will include "You Know My Name," Cornell's main title song for the latest James Bond film Casino Royale, as well as a cover of Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean," which Cornell has been known to play in concert.

i dont know why everyone is ragging on audioslave, their first album was sick and their second one was alright (though i cant defend revelations...not a good album at all) i think that audioslave was one of the best bands in the past couple years, at least they didnt play idiot speed metal or emo garbage thats taken over the radio in recent years (after listening to emo music, i can understand why they cut themselves....such S*** music...)

I hope rage gets back together for another album, theyre absolutely killer. and i hope chris goes on to a good solo career, though i think we will see him again sometime down the road because he always starts a band and leaves then starts another band and leaves he was with soundgarden then left for a solo thing, then made audioslave and left for a solo thing....

anyhow best of luck to all of them, keep on rockin!!

I am a dyed-in-the-wool Cornell fan. I've ruined relationships because chicks couldn't handle any more Soundgarden. I will say this. Thank freakin' God! Audioslave was as much a step down for Rage as it was Cornell. Anyone who has gagged their way through Revelations will surely back me up on that! With any luck, Cornell has enough voice left at 42 to give us one more good, cold chill down your spine, ass-kicker!

When Zack de la Rocha left Rage Against the Machine in October 2000, the band's future was put into question. Within months rumors flew that ex-Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell would replace de la Rocha. And gossip fueled truth, for Cornell joined the rest of Rage in the studio in May 2001. The mix was great and a musical bond was in the...

Chris Cornell Chris Cornell

Originally finding success as the singer/frontman of Seattle's Soundgarden, Chris Cornell also forged a successful solo career after the band's 1997 demise. Born in Seattle on July 20, 1964, Cornell's music career didn't take shape until he was a teenager -- playing drums in bands that mixed punk/new wave (the Police) and metal (AC/DC) covers....

Rage Against the Machine Rage Against the Machine

Rage Against the Machine earned acclaim from disenfranchised fans (and not insignificant derision from critics) for their bombastic, fiercely polemical music, which brewed sloganeering leftist rants against corporate America, cultural imperialism, and government oppression into a Molotov cocktail of punk, hip-hop, and thrash. Rage formed in Los...

Given the short distance separating Audioslave's second album, Out of Exile, in 2005 and their third, Revelations, in 2006, it's easy to assume that the Rage Against the Machine/Soundgarden supergroup has finally turned into an actual working band -- either that or the group is working hard to get to the end of their contract so they can go...

With Down on the Upside, it was clear that Soundgarden, while still strong, was no longer the ideal vehicle for its frontman Chris Cornell.
