On tour in Australia, rapper Soup tells paper that he and Akil, Marc 7, Chali 2na, and DJ Nu-Mark are calling it quits.
One of hip-hop's most long-standing groups is reportedly coming unglued Down Under.
Jurassic 5, the acclaimed Los Angeles-based quintet, is set to break up after their current tour, rapper Zaakir (Soup) told Aussie paper the Gold Coast Bulletin earlier this month.
"After the tour, that's basically it," Soup told the paper on the eve of the group's performance at the Good Vibrations Festival. "I don't want to sit here and fake around with it--we're not seeing eye to eye right now. People see us as a harmonizing, loving group, but that's far from the truth."
The group, which lost founding DJ and producer Cut Chemist last year, has been touring nonstop since the July 2006 release of its latest album, Feedback.
Each member's desire to work on solo projects may be at the core of any potential breakup.
"Some people may say it's a creative thing, but I'm not buying it," Soup said. "Some might say business, some might say merchandising, whatever, there's some really stupid s***--some really childish things--happening. [But] when it comes down to it, some people here want their own shine, their own thing. If that's what you want, I say more power to you. I hope it works out for you--just don't come up with lame excuses [for J5's demise]."
