Singer is pulled over and charged with pot possession; police say they also found four rifles, nine handguns, a switchblade knife, a Taser, and night vision goggles.
When all hell breaks loose, go find John Popper.
Washington State Police said they pulled over the Blues Traveler frontman's car late Wednesday for doing 111mph on a highway and found a massive weapons stash and emergency equipment, along with marijuana and pot paraphernalia.
Popper, a resident of Snohomish, Washington, was a passenger in his Mercedes SUV when police pulled it over on Interstate 90 near the Spokane/Lincoln county line, state police said. The car was being driven by Brian Gourgeois, 34, of Austin, Texas, who was charged with reckless driving.
An initial search of the SUV turned up a small amount of marijuana and a cache of weapons, police said, and a subsequent police dog search turned up even more weapons, mostly stashed in hidden compartments.
Police said they found four rifles, nine handguns, a switchblade knife, a Taser, and night vision goggles. The vehicle, which was seized, also had flashing emergency headlights, a siren, and a public address system, the state patrol said.
"Popper indicated to troopers that he had installed these items in his vehicle because [in the event of a natural disaster] he didn't want to be left behind," state police said in a news release.
Popper, a registered member of the Libertarian Party, also told officers he collected weapons, the Patrol said.
Popper and Gourgeois were booked administratively into the Adams County jail and released on their own recognizance. Authorities plan to charge them with possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia in addition to Gourgeois' charge of reckless driving.
Police are still investigating the legality of Popper's weapons stash.
Popper rose to fame in the 1990s as the frontman for Blues Traveler, winning a Grammy award in 1996 for the song "Run-around," which Popper composed. After suffering a heart attack in 1999, Popper had gastric bypass surgery that reduced his weight from nearly 450 pounds to 225 pounds.
Popper recently formed a group called The John Popper Project with DJ Logic, which released an album in 2006 and is scheduled to go on the road later this month.
