Shortlist Music Prize unveils nominees

Sixth annual award rolls out list of 61 nominees for top album of 2006, to be whittled down to 10 finalists later this spring.

The Shortlist Music Prize unveiled its Long List of nominees today, giving 61 bands and artists a chance to claim one of the most coveted awards in indie music.

The nominees include acts that dominated critics' best-of-2006 lists, including TV on the Radio, Lupe Fiasco, The Roots, Band of Horses, Hot Chip, Girl Talk, The Knife, Beck, Cat Power, The Decemberists, Neil Young, Editors, Beirut, Wolfmother, and Spank Rock.

The award, which goes to 2006's best album that hasn't sold more than 500,000 copies in the US, is chosen by a handful of prominent artists and journalists. This year's panel of listmakers, each of whom chose nominees for the Long List, include: Snow Patrol's Gary Lightbody, the Killers' Ronnie Vannucci, Franz Ferdinand, KT Tunstall, Panic! at the Disco, Flaming Lips frontman Wayne Coyne, journalists Toure and Rev. Moose, and 2006 Shortlist winner Sufjan Stevens.

The panel will pick 10 finalists in April, and the winner will be announced later in the spring.

"This year's Listmakers have created a streetwise playlist of state-of-the art rock, dance, and hip hop," Shortlist Creative Director Greg Spotts said in a statement.

Lightbody called this year's Long List "an incredible list that looks like my own iPod."
