Giants Stadium to host event for climate crisis awareness; the Police, Dave Matthews Band, Faith Hill, Tim McGraw, Ludacris, and Bon Jovi slated to play.

Thwarted by politicians opposed to his cause, Al Gore and the promoters of Live Earth have backed off plans to hold the US edition of the Live Earth concerts in DC, instead going with Giants Stadium in New Jersey.

The promoters confirmed a preliminary lineup for the US show, for which dozens of artists had been rumored to perform. The Police, Dave Matthews Band, Faith Hill, Tim McGraw, Ludacris, Jon Bon Jovi, Akon, Alicia Keys, AFI, John Mayer, Kanye West, Kelly Clarkson, KT Tunstall, Melissa Etheridge, Rihanna, and Roger Waters are all slated to play.

The concert is one of seven to be held July 7 on each of the seven continents. The others are slated for Shanghai, Sydney, Johannesburg, London, Rio de Janeiro, Tokyo, and Antarctica.

Gore had wanted to use the National Mall in Washington for the US edition, but two other groups had already obtained permits for that day. A subsequent effort to stage the show on the nearby US Capitol grounds was opposed by some Republicans in Congress, including Oklahoma Sen. James Inhofe, who has referred to global warming as a "hoax."

"We had a number of cities all over the United States saying 'come here, come here,"' Live Earth founder and executive producer Kevin Wall told the Associated Press. "New York and the state of New Jersey really wanted us to be there and went out of their way to accommodate us."

Organizers predict more than 1 million people will attend the shows, with millions more tuning in via the Internet, television, radio, and wireless services.

In addition, organizers announced more additions to the lineup for the Live Earth show at Wembley Stadium in the UK. Madonna, Beastie Boys, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Foo Fighters, Black Eyed Peas, Genesis, Snow Patrol, Duran Duran, Razorlight, Bloc Party, Corinne Bailey Rae, Keane, and Paolo Nutini are all confirmed. More names will be announced in the coming weeks.

"By attracting an audience of billions, we hope Live Earth will launch a global campaign giving a critical mass of people around the world the tools they need to help solve the climate crisis," Gore said in a statement. "But ultimately, corporations and governments must become global leaders taking decisive action to stop global warming."

Proceeds from the concerts will create a foundation to combat climate change led by The Alliance for Climate Protection, currently chaired by Gore. Tickets for the US performance will go on sale Monday, April 16 at 10 a.m. ET via Live Nation and Ticketmaster.

The Police The Police

Nominally, the Police were punk rock, but that's only in the loosest sense of the term. The trio's nervous, reggae-injected pop/rock was punky, but it wasn't necessarily punk. All three members were considerably more technically proficient than the average punk or new wave band. Andy Summers had a precise guitar attack that created dense,...

Dave Matthews Band Dave Matthews Band

The South African vocalist/guitarist Dave Matthews formed the Dave Matthews Band in Virginia in the early '90s. Featuring Matthews, Stefan Lessard, Leroi Moore, Boyd Tinsley, and Carter Beauford, the group's music presents a more pop-oriented version of the Grateful Dead crossed with the worldbeat explorations of Paul Simon and Sting. The band...

Faith Hill Faith Hill

One of the biggest female country stars of the '90s, Faith Hill also took advantage of the inroads Shania Twain made into pop territory, becoming an enormous crossover success by decade's end. Of course, Hill's movie star good looks certainly helped her cause, and her much-celebrated marriage to fellow country star Tim McGraw gave her career an...

Tim McGraw Tim McGraw

When Tim McGraw debuted in the early '90s, few would have predicted that he would eventually take over Garth Brooks' position as the most popular male singer in country music. Yet that's exactly what he did, thanks to a string of multi-platinum albums, a high-profile marriage to fellow superstar Faith Hill, and Brooks' own inevitable decline....

Although the Police's fifth release, 1983's Synchronicity, would be their most commercially successful and lead to a sold-out tour of enormodomes (including New York's Shea Stadium), it would turn out to be the trio's final album and tour. The Dave Matthews Band decided to team up with a very different producer for Stand Up -- Mark Batson, who earned his reputation with modern R&B and hip-hop records by the likes of India Arie, Joe, Beyoncé, and Seal. Faith Hill
It's clear from the cover photo on 2005's Fireflies that Faith Hill is beating a retreat from her half-baked, half-successful 2002 pop diva makeover, Cry. Not that the album was bad, or even an outright flop -- it just failed to do what it was intended to do, which was to make Faith Hill a true rival to Shania Twain, where her pop success was as...
Tim McGraw "Live Like You Were Dying"
Tim McGraw
There's good reason for Tim McGraw's endurance at the top of contemporary country: he's a restless visionary who's worked hard to improve as an interpretive singer. In 2002, McGraw bucked the trend and convinced his label, and producers Byron Gallimore and Darran Smith, to let him use his road band in the studio. The rough and tumble intimacy of...
