Mogwai, They Might Be Giants, and OK Go are among those contributing to Dig for Fire; Frank Black also has new solo record, greatest hits project on the way.

Pixies fans might still be pining for that much-rumored reunion album, but in the meantime, a bunch of indie rock stalwarts have lined up for a Pixies tribute album.

They Might Be Giants, OK Go, Mogwai, John P. Strohm, British Sea Power, The Rosebuds, Dinosaur Jr. frontman J. Mascis, and Joy Zipper are all slated to contribute to Dig For Fire: A Pixies Tribute, which will hit stores November 13 via indie imprint American Laundromat.

In a series of posts on the tribute album's MySpace page, American Laundromat's Sean T. Rayburn revealed a few of the tracks artists would be covering. Scottish rock band Mogwai has recorded a cover of "Gouge Away," while They Might Be Giants has selected "Havalina," a tune from the Pixies' 1990 album Bossanova. In addition, North Carolina-based group Rosebuds has recorded a cover of "Break My Body."

Rayburn also wrote that the label will be offering preorder specials for the album, as well as an exclusive limited edition first pressing with bonus tracks, alternative art, and a seven-inch split vinyl with an exclusive bonus track not available on the CD.

Meanwhile, Pixies frontman Frank Black has been busy with solo material under his Black Francis moniker. The prolific songwriter has a new album on the way. Dubbed Bluefinger, the record is reportedly in reference to Dutch painter and musician Herman Brood.

The album's first single, "Threshold Apprehension," will drop as a digital download beginning May 7. On May 25, the single will be released as a limited edition seven-inch single.

In addition, Best of Frank Black 93 - 03 will hit stores June 12. As for a new Pixies album, Black said last fall that the group was scheduled to start rehearsals and recording at the start of January.

Pixies Pixies

Combining jagged, roaring guitars and stop-start dynamics with melodic pop hooks, intertwining male-female harmonies and evocative, cryptic lyrics, the Pixies were one of the most influential American alternative rock bands of the late '80s. The Pixies weren't accomplished musicians -- Black Francis wailed and bashed out chords while Joey...

Mogwai Mogwai

The cosmic post-rock band Mogwai was formed in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1996 by guitarist/vocalist Stuart Braithwaite, guitarist Dominic Aitchison, and drummer Martin Bulloch, longtime friends with the goal of creating "serious guitar music." Toward that end they added another guitarist, John Cummings, before debuting in March 1996 with the single...

They Might Be Giants They Might Be Giants

Combining a knack for infectious melodies with a quirky, bizarre sense of humor and a vaguely avant-garde aesthetic borrowed from the New York post-punk underground, They Might Be Giants became one of the most unlikely alternative success stories of the late '80s and early '90s. Musically, the duo of John Flansburgh and John Linnell borrowed...

OK Go OK Go

The Chicago band OK Go combined off-kilter guitars, Pixies/Cars fetishism, and straightforward power pop sensibilities to produce eccentric, catchy songs. Consisting of vocalist/guitarist Damian Kulash, guitarist Andrew Duncan, bassist Tim Nordwind, and drummer Dan Konopka, OK Go formed in the fall of 1998. Prior to Kulash moving to Chicago from...

Rosebuds Rosebuds

Indie rock trio the Rosebuds formed in May 2001, shortly after Ivan Howard (vocals/guitars) and Kelly Crisp (keyboards) met while in college in Wilmington, North Carolina. They moved to Raleigh that fall and enlisted drummer Billy Alphin (of Ashley Stove). After a split seven-inch, nearby Merge records discovered their demo in early 2003 and...

Frank Black Frank Black

Inverting his stage name from Black Francis to Frank Black, the former Pixies lead singer/songwriter embarked on a solo career after he broke up the band in early 1993; actually, he began recording his solo album before he told the band the news. Working with former Pere Ubu member Eric Drew Feldman, Black occasionally heads into the...

Most Pixies fans know that the mini-album Come On Pilgrim was taken from The Purple Tape, the 17-song demo the group cut during their first studio session in 1987. Fifteen years later, Pixies answer the nagging question, "What became of the rest of the demos?" While many of them appeared on bootlegs, this nine-song collection is a useful...
Mogwai "Mr. Beast"
Mogwai
Possibly the most accessible yet sophisticated album Mogwai has released, Mr. Beast strips away most of the electronic embellishment of their recent work in favor of a back-to-basics sound that returns to and expands on the approach they pioneered on Young Team. Mr. Beast is also a surprisingly spontaneous-sounding album -- in the best possible...

Arriving just a few months after their very enjoyable Indestructible Object EP, They Might Be Giants' The Spine is relatively disappointing, with fewer memorable moments spread out over its 16 songs. Perhaps tellingly, two of the album's best moments already appeared on Indestructible Object: "Memo to Human Resources" is a brief, bittersweet...
OK Go "Oh No"
OK Go
The anxious and modern children of indie rock and new wave, OK Go will always have something you can love. In 2002 it was a squelchy, three-minute summation of what made the Pixies great called "Get Over It." Three years later it's a savvy batch of songs that are probably too calculated for their own good -- perfectly arranged like those natty...

Rosebuds
The Rosebuds' first album, 2003's The Rosebuds Make Out, was a fun album, indie rock at its most lighthearted and breezy. The songs are coated with a layer of almost gothic gloom and smeared with...
