Annual September fest unveils early lineup, which also includes Decemberists, Joss Stone, and Andrew Bird, in a Chronicle crossword puzzle.

Although the stench of stale beer and burned synapses might still be lingering in Austin from South by Southwest (SXSW), the Texas capital is itching to host some of the world's best bands for another go-round.

The White Stripes The White Stripes

The organizers of the annual Austin City Limits festival, which takes place September 14 to 16 in Austin's Zilker Park, unveiled the preliminary lineup for the three-day day September event, with The White Stripes, Bjork, The Decemberists, Peter, Bjorn, and John, Rodrigo y Gabriela, Robert Earl Keen, Joss Stone, and Andrew Bird among the top names.

The festival unveiled the lineup in its usual quirky fashion, running a crossword in the Austin Chronicle that revealed the names, having done so last year with an online scavenger hunt.

The revelation also included Rose Hill Drive, Gotan Project, Indigo Girls, Heartless Bastards, Augustana, Beau Soleil, and Andy Palacio. Those 15 bands join the following already-confirmed acts, including Kings of Leon, Raul Malo, Stephen Marley, Ben Kweller, Rev. Horton Heat, Asleep at the Wheel, The Little Ones, Charlie Musselwhite, The Jellydots, and Sara Hickman.

The full lineup is expected to be announced in the coming days. Tickets can be purchased here. Three-day passes cost $145.

I too, comparing this to previous years (last year Van, Petty etc) am underwhelmed. I like the mix of bigger acts with lesser known ones at ACL.

The White Stripes The White Stripes

Detroit minimalist rock duo (specifically, southwest Detroit minimalist rock duo) the White Stripes -- Jack White, guitar and vocals, Meg White, drums -- formed in 1997 (Bastille Day, to be precise) with the idea of making simple rock & roll music. From the red-and-white peppermint candy motif of their debut singles, self-titled album, and stage...

Björk Björk

Björk first came to prominence as one of the lead vocalists of the avant-pop Icelandic sextet the Sugarcubes, but when she launched a solo career after the group's 1992 demise, she quickly eclipsed her old band's popularity. Instead of following in the Sugarcubes' arty guitar rock pretensions, Björk immersed herself in dance and club culture,...

The Decemberists The Decemberists

Colin Meloy leads the Decemberists, a five-piece outfit whose pop sound has listeners comparing the band with the likes of Neutral Milk Hotel and Belle & Sebastian. Meloy, who hails from Missoula, MT, is the main songwriter for the group. Rounding out the lineup are Ezra Holbrook on drums, Nate Query on upright bass, Jenny Conlee on accordion,...

Joss Stone Joss Stone

English singer Joss Stone was just 16 when she emerged on the pop/rock scene in 2003. Ready to take on the pop domination of Britney and Christina with a sound wise beyond her teenage years, Stone positioned herself among the more established and credible artists (Norah Jones, Jill Scott, Nikka Costa) reigning adult alternative pop/rock. Born...

The White Stripes
According to Jack White, Get Behind Me Satan deals with "characters and the ideal of truth," but in truth, the album is just as much about what people expect from the White Stripes and what they themselves want to deliver. Advance publicity for the album stated that it was written on piano, marimba, and acoustic guitar, suggesting that it was...
Björk "Drawing Restraint 9"
Björk
Though Björk has written music for films before, her collaboration with Matthew Barney on Drawing Restraint 9 is a much deeper and more natural pairing, which makes sense, considering that they're partners in life (and now in art). Björk's pieces for the film reflect its fusions of the contemporary with the ancient, and the organic with the...

Joss Stone
On the cover of her debut, The Soul Sessions, Joss Stone's face is obscured by a vintage microphone, a deliberate move that emphasized the retro-soul vibe of the LP while hiding the youthful face that would have given away that Stone was a mere 16 years old at the time of the album's release. The point was to put the music before the image and...
