MP3.com: I have Nocturno Culto on the phone with me today. Hello, how are you? Nocturno Culto: I'm fine, thanks. It's nice to be here. Thank you. I'm calling you today so we can talk about your new film that you've put out on DVD called The Misanthrope: The Existence of Solitude and Chaos. Yeah, that's right. Finally, it's out, I have to say, because it's not been very easy...because sometimes during the process, you know, I'm very insecure about things...because when you see such material so many times that I did, you're starting to wonder eventually, what the hell am I doing, you know. This is just too weird for everyone. But, I guess it's like this...when you record an album and you're mixing the album, you can listen to it, you listen to the songs and suddenly your ear goes blind, so you don't know what you're hearing, actually. And that's the same with a film, actually. But I have to admit that I had a lot of fun doing it. So that was the thing that saved my day, eventually. I've seen the film already, and I quite enjoyed it. I don't know if there's an actual message in there. I apologize if I didn't get it, but it was quite enjoyable. Well, thanks. I think that's the thing I like about it. When I started this four years ago, I didn't know exactly when the release date was going to be, but I have to admit that I like that it's out just now because there's so many documentaries going on about Norwegian black metal and stuff like that. So to be able to release this DVD ...it's kind of documentary, you know, but there's no real information. I mean, the people that are in the DVD are very authentic because this is, you know...it's no playing games with the camera or anything. It's just like being alone with some people. Right, and that's true. There are a lot of films lately coming out about black metal and the Norwegian scene, but none of those seem to be coming from the guys who are doing it--with the exception of your film. Yeah, exactly. Of course a lot of people will find this really boring because there is no screaming and shouting and cutting themselves, or whatever. But it's not supposed to be a black metal film either. It's just some things that are related to metal, but other things are just related to the culture. Maybe... you know, it's hard to say. But about any message...I was doing some interviews earlier today and they keep asking me, "Why didn't you explain this, why didn't you explain that?" And I'm like, "Oh, come on, try to use your imagination." But there's not supposed to be any message, actually. I think the point is that people should have a break from everyday life and just, you know, watch it. And just maybe, it gets you thinking about something. And then you're actually over the finish line. That's the point of it. I think it's a great example of a documentary because you are the guys. Many of the people in the film make music besides yourself, and that's what you guys are doing every day. I mean, some people have a different idea about what black metal artists are doing every day. I quite enjoyed it, and it wasn't very far from what I even expected. All right, that's something. I have to say that when it comes to black metal, you're talking about the black metal scene, you know, and everything. But the community of people that are into black metal...everybody is there for different reasons. So it's like other communities around in the world. It's exactly the same because you have a**holes, you have pompous a**holes, you have really great guys and girls. You never know, actually. It's just so diverse. And as I said, everybody is there for different reasons, even if it's just being social. There are so many aspects of it, I think. You know, the Darkthrone stuff...we don't like to be in the spotlight for some reason. I don't know...we just like to keep quiet, so then that's why we are just such a quiet bunch of people. And that applies to Aura Noir as well. So it's just about breathing with your stomach and just, you know, trying to enjoy life as much as possible. You have your Tyrant Syndicate label and you guys have some recent signings too, right? And you have a new release coming? Yeah, that's right. It's Obliteration from Norway. So I think their release date is set for the 28th of May, so that should be great. I think their death metal is very hard to dislike because they have a bit of both worlds. I mean, you can easily hear that old school sound. But it's a really great sound as well. It's not really modern, but it's like, well, people will know when they hear it because it's, yeah, such a great album. And Tyrant Syndicate is keeping me busy somehow. There's not too much to do, and I think the thing is that we don't want to sign too many bands either because then I will have too much to do. I don't want that. I'd rather spend the time with the few bands we have. That's cool. Well, what about Darkthrone? What's next for Darkthrone? Well, actually, I came home yesterday. So now we are finished with the two last songs for the album, and that's what I'm doing today, I'm putting on some bass guitar and stuff. So it's going to be mixed pretty soon--before the end of the month--so I'll deliver everything to England. Then, I'm getting a really long summer vacation, which I of course will spend fishing. So I'm really looking forward to this summer, actually, because I remember last summer. I mean, even if I had a good time back then as well, I knew that when the autumn was coming, it was going to be a lot of work--both with the album and of course with the DVD as well. So now finally, all the pressure is gone. And it's almost like I'm feeling a bit nervous. I mean, what's next, you know? It's like...it's too good to be true. Do you have a title for the new Darkthrone record? Yes, the album will be called F*** off and Live Forever, or it's going to be called F*** off and Die. Some people might say, OK...oh...this is going to be even more punk than the last album, but it's not true, actually. It will probably be even more metal in some kind of way. I mean, we are just picking up where we left The Cult is Alive, and we probably have dragged the metal and the rock element a bit further. It's a very diverse album; it's a lot of different songs there, and I think also the sound on the album will be very different because we record two songs each time we meet up, and it results in different sounds on the album. But I think it's better to try to concentrate on each song and give that particular song its own...like...identity. Yeah, and also, there is going to be an EP in July or something, which will contain one very exclusive song, only for the EP. And there will be a different version of a song called "Wisdom of the Dead." It's a different version on the album. Yeah. And plus another song, and yeah...stuff like that. So that EP will be called New Wave of Black Heavy Metal. Awesome. I love it. Yeah, because, you know, we have to tell people what's going on really. So they don't confuse it with anything else. So yeah...it's fun to do. I mean, we're just feeling basically very free. And it's a nice feeling...being a low budget band and all. That's awesome. Yeah, it's great. So we're really looking forward to releasing this material. It's great, you'll see. Well, we're looking forward to hearing it. Of course, everybody really admires the Darkthrone approach, and I think that's one of the reasons why the metal community finds you so endearing, such an inspiration, and an example of guys who can keep it real. Yeah, I always find it a bit strange because Fenriz and I...we don't expect anything, you know. We don't expect anyone to like us, but of course, we do a little. But that's because we really believe in the stuff we're doing. But it's always flattering, you know, when people say "what a good record" and so on, you know. It feels good. But then again, we feel that we're doing the things we have to do in order to keep a certain balance in the entire system. We have seen the whole picture quite well. I'm thinking a lot about it because there's room for everybody in the metal community. And I think we should be happy about everyone, actually, because everybody plays their kind of role in the system. And they should. As long as you really believe in what you're doing. There are probably some that don't believe in what they're doing, but ...I don't know...just speculations. I have a lot of speculations in my mind that I...I won't tell you! Well, maybe we can save that for another interview. I really appreciate your taking some time to get us up to date on what you're doing over in Norway. Yeah. It's my pleasure. Yes. All right then, we'll look for your new releases coming this summer. And everyone can go and check out more information on your new DVD at peaceville.com. Yeah, that's right. There's a link there. All right. Well, thank you so much again--and rock out! My pleasure Christine, bye, bye.
