Green Day, Gwen Stefani, Smokey Robinson, Gladys Knight, and Doug E. Fresh perform; Jordin Sparks takes crown.

Some of the biggest stars in music performed at the sixth season finale of American Idol, but in the end, all eyes were on a previously unknown 17-year-old girl from Glendale, Arizona.

Jordin Sparks Jordin Sparks

Seventeen-year-old Jordin Sparks was named the 2007 American Idol last night, winning a telephone vote that saw 74 million votes cast.

She beat out 25-year-old Blake Lewis and became the youngest competitor ever to win the coveted title, which guarantees her a record deal with a major label.

"Thank you so much for everything. Mom and Dad, I love you!" Sparks said as she was named the winner.

The event, held at Hollywood's Kodak Theater, was packed with stars, including four of the show's five previous winners--Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Ruben Studdard, and Taylor Hicks. The quartet performed a medley of Beatles tunes with the show's top 12 finalists.

Green Day, Gwen Stefani, Smokey Robinson, and Gladys Knight also performed at the event, while beatbox pioneer Doug E. Fresh performed with Lewis, who brought beatboxing to the competition for the first time.

Lewis told Reuters after the event that he had Sparks pegged as the next American Idol weeks ago.

"I feel great," he said. "I was trying to wear a 'Vote For Jordin Sparks' T-shirt last night but they wouldn't let me."

I think this is still not popularity voting. A finalist can win even when he/she has only one fan and that fan is willing to spend a lot of money...('',) Its such a shame to let go amore talented singer just because they have fewer votes...And to think people really support it, not just US.

You do realize that in American Idol, one person can vote an infinite number of times, whereas in a presidential election each person can cast only one vote.... So the sheer number of votes is irrelevant.

More people voted for this than did in the last US election. If you're over 18 and you're not registered to vote, go look in the mirror. You know all the US' problems? They're YOUR FAULT. Sanjaya/Jordin in '08!

Green Day Green Day

Out of all the post-Nirvana American alternative bands to break into the pop mainstream, Green Day was second only to Pearl Jam in terms of influence. At their core, Green Day was simply punk revivalists, recharging the energy of speedy, catchy three-chord punk-pop songs. Though their music wasn't particularly innovative, they brought the sound...

Gwen Stefani Gwen Stefani

Before she discovered she could write songs, Gwen Stefani was looking forward to a life of marriage, children, and white picket fences. When her brother introduced her to ska and new wave music, it set off a chain of events that would eventually lead to millions of albums sold and a Madonna-sized public image that extended past music and into...

Smokey Robinson Smokey Robinson

If you're looking for the all-time number one purveyor of mainstream romantic soul, Smokey Robinson may well be the man, in the face of some towering competition. With the Miracles in the 1960s, he paced dozens of tuneful Motown hits with his beautiful high tenor. As a solo performer from the 1970s onward, he was one of the staples of urban...

Gladys Knight Gladys Knight

One of the great soul singers, Gladys Knight was a performer from her childhood years, forming the Pips with her brother Merald and a couple cousins. They made the Top Ten in 1961 with the heavily doo wop-influenced "Every Beat of My Heart," and recorded some fine, nowadays overlooked, pop-soul sides for the Fury and Maxx labels in the early and...

Doug E. Fresh Doug E. Fresh

The first human beatbox in the rap world, and still the best of all time, Doug E. Fresh amazed audiences with his note-perfect imitations of drum machines, effects, and often large samples of hip-hop classics. Fresh was born Doug E. Green Day
It's a bit tempting to peg Green Day's sprawling, ambitious, brilliant seventh album, American Idiot, as their version of a Who album, the next logical step forward from the Kinks-inspired popcraft of their underrated 2000 effort, Warning, but things aren't quite that simple. American Idiot is an unapologetic, unabashed rock opera, a form that...

In the wake of Gwen Stefani's elevation to diva status in the early 2000s, it's easy to forget that for a brief moment at the start of the millennium it seemed that she and her band, No Doubt, were dangerously close to being pegged as yet another of the one-album alt-rock wonders of the '90s. Return of Saturn, their long-awaited 2000 follow-up...

Smokey Robinson hasn't had much use for making records since his records stopped selling in significant numbers, which happened as of the early '90s; after that, his only regular album has been 1999's Intimate.
