Annual PETA contest includes the likes of Vedder, Yorke, McCartney, Wentz, Carrie Underwood, Shania Twain, Prince, and a host of hip-hoppers.

Gone are the days when Moby was the most prominent musician who didn't eat anything that used to walk.

Joss Stone, too sexy for meat. Joss Stone, too sexy for meat.

PETA unveiled its nominees for its third annual sexiest vegetarian this week, and the list is chock-full of musicians, including big stars like Eddie Vedder, Thom Yorke, Prince, Paul McCartney, Pete Wentz, Morrissey, Carrie Underwood, Shania Twain, and of course, Moby.

A male and female winner will be chosen through voting on PETA's Web site. Natalie Portman and Benji Madden of Good Charlotte won last year.

There are plenty of other rockers on this year's list of nominees, including Larry Mullen Jr. of U2, Perry Farrell, Red Hot Chili Peppers frontman Anthony Keidis, Andy Hurley of Fall Out Boy, Omar Rodriguez-Lopez and Cedric Bixler-Zavala of The Mars Volta, Benji Madden of Good Charlotte, Brian Bell of Weezer, Chris Walla of Death Cab For Cutie, Doug Martsch of Built to Spill, Rob Zombie, Travis Barker of +44, Serj Tankian of System of a Down, superproducer Rick Rubin, 30 Seconds to Mars singer Jared Leto, Ted Leo, and Fugazi's Ian MacKaye.

But hip-hop is well represented on the list of nominees as well. Outkast's Andre 3000, KRS-One, Common, Mos Def, Q-Tip, ?uestlove, Black Thought, and Hub of the Roots, The Wu-Tang Clan's RZA, GZA, and Masta Killa, Michael Franti, M-1 and Stic.man of Dead Prez, and Prodigy of Mobb Deep all made the list.

Underwood and Twain were joined among female singers by Chrissie Hynde of The Pretenders, Emmylou Harris, Erykah Badu, Fiona Apple, India.Arie, and Joss Stone.

Anyone who supports PETA supports terrorism and the list of artists in this "contest" aren't going to get any love from me. Supporting PETA is just like supporting the Hezbollah or Al Queda.

I have nothing against vegetarianism (although veganism is way too extreme for various reasons). I have been eating less and less meat; I may become a semi-vegetarian down the road. I have nothing against vegetarians who don't shove their beliefs down our throats and respect my eating habits. I just have a problem with the PETAphiles who think a fruit fly is equal to a human being or those who think that "animal rights" involve acting like animals themselves. Then again, Ingrid Newkirk wants to be turned into a purse after she dies. I'd like that purse; I'd know what I'd do with it...

I suggest you boycott all those bands and artists and write them why you do so. PETA is an extremist organization who wants to ban pet "ownership" and animal labour like guide dogs and police dogs.

If anyone wants to suggest I did the wrong thing by feeding, walking, petting, playing, sharing my house with a dog for thirteen years and to make shure it died humanly at the vet instead of suffering a horrible death to cancer they are free to sell me so and I'll feel more than free to tell them off.

The only one I listened to on this list was Rob Zombie... Now if you excuse me I have some letter-writing to do.

Shania all the way. No contest. For males, ah, whatever. It could be Jeffrey Dohmer and I wouldn't care.

wow, I didn't know all these people were vegetarians. Doug Martsch of Built to Spill, though? Have you SEEN this guy? not sexy.

Pearl Jam Pearl Jam

Pearl Jam rose from the ashes of Mother Love Bone to become the most popular American rock & roll band of the '90s. After vocalist Andrew Wood overdosed on heroin in 1990, guitarist Stone Gossard and bassist Jeff Ament assembled a new band, bringing in Mike McCready on lead guitar and recording a demo with Soundgarden's Matt Cameron on drums....

Paul McCartney Paul McCartney

Out of all the former Beatles, Paul McCartney by far had the most successful solo career, maintaining a constant presence in the British and American charts during the '70s and '80s. In America alone, he had nine number one singles and seven number one albums during the first 12 years of his solo career. Although he sold records, McCartney never...

Radiohead Radiohead

Radiohead was one of the few alternative bands of the early '90s to draw heavily from the grandiose arena rock that characterized U2's early albums. But the band internalized that epic sweep, turning it inside out to tell tortured, twisted tales of angst and alienation. Vocalist Thom Yorke's pained lyrics were brought to life by the group's...

Fall Out Boy Fall Out Boy

The four members of Chicago's Fall Out Boy came together in suburban Wilmette around 2000. Vocalist/guitarist Patrick Stump, bassist/lyricist Pete Wentz, drummer Andrew Hurley, and guitarist Joe Trohman had all been in and out of various units connected to Chicago's underground hardcore scene. Most notably, Hurley drummed for Racetraitor, the...

Carrie Underwood Carrie Underwood

The first country American Idol, Carrie Underwood grew up in the small town of Checotah, OK, and began singing with her church at the tender age of three. Throughout her childhood, she also performed at functions for the Lion's Club and Old Settlers Day, and eventually at festivals in several states. Along with developing her singing, Underwood...

Shania Twain Shania Twain

Emerging in the mid-'90s, Shania Twain became the most popular country music artist since Garth Brooks. Skillfully fusing mainstream, AOR rock production with country-pop, Twain and her producer/husband Robert John "Mutt" Lange created a commercial juggernaut with her second album, The Woman in Me. The record became a multi-platinum phenomenon,...

Few artists have created a body of work as rich and varied as Prince. During the '80s, he emerged as one of the most singular talents of the rock & roll era, capable of seamlessly tying together pop, funk, folk, and rock. Nearly 15 years after Ten, Pearl Jam finally returned to the strengths of their debut with 2006's Pearl Jam, a sharply focused set of impassioned hard rock. Given the tightly controlled nature of American Idol, it's a wonder that the televised talent contest has never produced a winner who specialized in country music, since there's no segment of modern popular music that is controlled tighter than contemporary country. Maybe this thought was in the minds of Simon Fuller and the rest of AmIdol's 19...

When Up! was released in November 2002, Shania Twain revealed in one of many promotional interviews that she writes far more songs than can fit on her records and that she hides any personal, introspective songs she pens, not even playing them for her husband and collaborator Robert John "Mutt" Lange. Musicology was a self-conscious comeback, a record designed to return Prince to the spotlight and the charts, and it worked: even if it spawned no big hits, the 2004 LP became his first album to crack the Billboard Top Ten since 1995's The Gold Experience, get a fair amount of radio play, and get a bunch of positive press, along with a...
