In a move that could incite delirious fans to buy the new Smashing Pumpkins' album Zeitgeist three times, Corgan and his bandmates are releasing four different versions of the album. In addition to the standard version, which will feature 12 tracks, editions of the album have been created for retailers Best Buy, Target, and iTunes, each with a different bonus track.

The Best Buy version will include the bonus track "Death From Above," while the Target edition will feature the extra song "Zeitgeist." Customers who buy the album through iTunes will receive the additional song "Stellar."

The album hits all stores July 10.

The Smashing Pumpkins, which features original members Corgan and drummer Jimmy Chamberlain, as well as new bassist Ginger Reyes and new guitarist Jeff Schroeder, are set to play a series of live shows at the Orange Peel in Asheville, N.C., starting tomorrow. What about the bonus song box-set? And there must be a lot of broken takes and unfinished songs. I was hoping for a double again. United States better have that lyric in it or "I'll be damned" Just enough to fill my SM platter. Smashing into my driver side window at exactly 5 mph would be cool to. I mean the pumpkin. Inside joke.

That July 17th release date had better be a mistake. The album was supposed to be out 07.07.07 but then got pushed to July 10th because they couldn't do a Saturday release.

I waited 7 years, so I can wait another 7 days, but I'd really rather not :p

I'll be buying the album from Target because I don't like the idea of a bonus track being inserted into the middle of an album (as in the Best Buy version), not that this whole scam is particularly appealing in any case.

They should've picked one retailer to support and included a bonus disc with all the songs. Somehow I doubt Billy Corgan will mind if I download the other bonus tracks off of freeBay. As big of a Pumpkins fan as I am I don't need 2 CD copies of Zeitgeist and the iTunes download. They'll all end up getting released on some collection I'll buy down the line anyway...

Of all the major alternative rock bands of the early '90s, the Smashing Pumpkins were the group least influenced by traditional underground rock.
