Federico Aubele: Homeward bound

Argentinean singer/producer waxes poetic on the themes behind his new album, Panamericana.

Federico Aubele is homesick--but not in the traditional sense.

The Argentinean songwriter and producer has been on the road constantly over the past five years and has lived in Barcelona and Berlin for long stretches. As a result, he longs for his native Buenos Aires.

That longing has yielded a compelling new album, Panamericana, which hits stores September 18.

But instead of songs about his hometown, Aubele has crafted a record that extends throughout the Americas. Aubele uses the theme of the Pan-American highway, which extends from the southern top of Argentina to the northern tip of Alaska, to talk about the oft-overlooked commonality between American countries.

The sound is a continuation of Aubele's 2004 debut, Gran Hotel Buenos Aires: dubbed bass lines and effects, hip-hop beats, and Aubele's mellow acoustic guitar and atmospheric singing style.

Aubele sat down with MP3.com at the Latin Alternative Music Conference last week in New York City to talk about the new album and how he connected with Thievery Corporation's Eric Hilton and Rob Garza, the founders of Aubele's label, Eighteenth Street Lounge (ESL).
