MP3-tag editor

What is your recommendation for a good MP3-tag editor for Windows and Mac?

Virtually every audio jukebox program --such as iTunes or Windows Media Player--has effective tag-editing capabilities, which helps you customize or standardize your entire music collection. There are some programs, though, that do tagging better than others. Yahoo Musicmatch Jukebox Plus 10's ($20) batch-friendly Super Tagging utilizes its database to fill in tag info automatically. MediaMonkey (free to try, $20 to buy) is a Windows-only audio jukebox that's compatible with many formats and includes intelligent and automatic tag editing. And if you're looking for a nice, free editor, check out MP3 Tag Tools. For a cool (and also free) Mac editor, check out iEatBrainz.

iPod FM tuner and speaker systems

I'm looking to finally get an iPod , and one thing I can't figure out is this: with the new Apple Hi-Fi (or any of the existing speaker systems, like the im7), can we hear FM radio by using the iPod FM radio adapter that Apple/Jobs introduced a month or two ago? Thanks!

Thanks for the e-mail, and good question. The answer is yes and no. Let's start with no. The iPod Radio Remote plugs into the dock connector on the latest iPods, so it won't work seamlessly with speaker systems such as the new iPod Hi-Fi and the Logitech mm50, which require the dock connector for audio and control. If you don't mind the iPod not being docked into the speakers, you can always connect the iPod's headphone jack into the speakers' line input (found on most models but not on the Bose SoundDock) to listen to FM.

A device that plays music and has a built-in FM radio?

I'm looking for a small 1GB device with FM and a standard battery (AA and AAA). I want to listen to music and NPR podcasts.

There are quite a few good choices in the 1GB flash-memory space. You might be interested in the MobiBlu B153, which has a spectacular battery life of 146 hours (rated for 153). It's also podcast ready, meaning it has software installed on the device that allows you to hook it up to any computer to access and manage your fave podcasts.

WMA Lossless compatibility

I was wondering whether there are any players that play WMA Lossless very well. It must not just support it--it should also play it well.

Actually and surprisingly, there are very few players that support WMA Lossless, which compresses files to half their original size without any loss of audio data so that they sound better than your average audio file. If you're in need of WMA Lossless, check out the Toshiba Gigabeat S and other next-generation Portable Media Center (PMC) devices. These are portable A/V players, along with first-generation PMCs such as the Creative Zen PMC. Or you can get an Apple iPod or Nano and utilize the similar Apple Lossless format.
