Musings about working with Jeff

I originally hadthis post about the HotSpot, and this one about Jeff mushed together, buteach needs to be its own separate thing.

I wanted to say a few words about Jeff. For about the last year or so that I worked at GameSpot, just before I left for Blizzard, Jeff was my boss.I worked primarily as a reviews editor for him in that final year at GS. Most of you know Jeff as that funny off-the-wall guy who charismatically carried On The Spot with Rich, and also my own podcast, the HotSpot. And he is that guy. The side you might not know is the Jeff who wouldn't hesitate to go to bat for his people. I wrote quite a number of reviews while working for Jeff--not all of them were particularly flattering of course. And once in a while some angry marketing flack, or on occasion, producer would contact me, irate over my lambasting their game. All I ever had to do was forward them to Jeff, and he'd bite the bullet for me--he'd deal with their angry tirade and shield me and all the other reviews editors from all that nonsense.

So what you say? That's his job as head of the reviews department, right? Well here's the thing. He stood by me even when I was in the wrong. Some of you may remember the gaffe I made on a certain high-profile review, regarding certain online features of the game. That was totally my fault, and my oversight on a high profile game. Even though it was a relatively innocuous thing that didn't materially affect the rating, it turned into quite a fuss, primarily because fanboys of a certain major game company think the review scale for that company's games should run from 9 to 10 instead of 1 to 10. And if a review dare drop below 9, the facts and assertions in that review better be bulletproof, lest you incur their eternal ire. In this case, it was not.

So it was scandalous and embarrassing for GameSpot to deal with that mistake. And Jeff could have easily thrown me under the bus. But he didn't. We had a discussion about what went wrong and how I missed it. I told him what happened, and that I was terribly embarrassed by the whole thing. He and I then sat down together and tested the specific features I missed. He agreed with me that they were immaterial to the score, and then we added the amendment to the review. There was no yelling, no threatening, no passive aggressive bullsh*t. He treated me like a professional, worked together with me to make it right, and discussed how to avoid making that mistake again. If there was any fallout or angry phone call from the publisher on that issue, I never heard or knew about it--he or one of the other senior editors handled it, because they always believed it was important forthe reviews staff to be independent and not worry about outside pressures. From start to finish, he stood by me and my work even in the rare case that it wasn't up to GameSpot's high standards. And I always appreciated that.

It's what makes it extra sad to me that Jeff was dismissed. Apparently there was no one above Jeff in the GameSpot hierarchywho would do the same thing for him that he did for me -- stand by him and the work he did.

Here's hoping nobody here ever caves to pressure from publishers or fanboys.

The stand up guy, is the guy who will stand by you.

Too bad no one stood up for him. Every GS staff member is afraid of losing their job. They arent saying anything to CNET, I guess they really couldnt care if Jeff worked at Gamespot or not.

I don-t know Jeff in person. But I do know the moment the internet explodes because a certain company-suit-wearer made a fatal mistake. Jeff will now be the Hero of unseen proportions, and I guess the whole industry is bedazzled right now. He worked his ass off for this Website and they thank him like that?

That was a beautiful post. Jeff was great.

Jeff is awesome. thanks for the story Bob, and i remember the review you messed up on.

I never even thought that the mindless babbling of the fanboys would directly effect you guys. I thought that all those Fanboy nonsense was just for kids to have fun shouting and all, and you guys had a impenetrable shield where all their stupid arguments never mattered (which is good)

but sadly those other guys , non reviewers, dont have that shield and apparently the reviewers dont have a shield between them.

Thats an awesome story. Thanks for your input Bob. So he would deal with all the angry producers that would phone in regarding negative reviews? Even if it wasnt written by Jeff? Thats insane, all credit to Jeff. He to me was Gamespot to be honest. It will be interesting to see what direction this website takes now. Lets hope Gamespot stil remains a site that I will constantly come back to for news, reviews and other things related to gaming.

I am reading all the blogs, as many on this site i am sad in a way i didnt believe possible. I am not ashamed to say i have tears in my eyes after reading what you wrote (and i am 35). Thanks
I hope your job at Blizzard is giving you great satisfaction and all the happiness you deserve

coolguy: it's not that simple, and it's not fair to characterize the rest of the GS staff that way. When you work in the corporate world, and when you get older and have bills to pay and financial responsibilities, you will understand. And to my knowledge they all stood behind Jeff and supported him as much as they possibly could. Also if you listen to the HotSpot you'd see that nobody knew the termination was coming. They all got blindsided by it, and it happened before anyone could even think about coming to his defense.

It's lucky that you had the rare opportunity to work with someone like Jeff!

But isn't it amazing that someone through the love he has for his work would touch so many people? Though the last couple of years has been tough seeing many editors leaving for other endeavors, it is especially hard to he Jeff go. His charisma and charm carried through Hot Spot, On the Spot, and everything he did for GameSpot...As far as we are concerned, Jeff WAS GameSpot!

Its good to hear he was a boos of that nature. that is what the bossman is for, taking heat for the lower guy. my bosses have done it for me, and when i thank them, they normally tell me not to worry about it, and thats what they are there for. (i have made a $500,000 mistake, and was untouched). I dont believe he was dismessed for that specific review. The truth is, is with the workers rights, etc, they had to have quite the file to have him fired. They also, can only use information from his personal file that he is aware of, and has aknowledged. anything else does not hold up. So, there may be things he has done over his 11 years, that they decided to pull up. If he wanted to, he could fight it, and win if the grounds were right.

The world of HR/Unions/Rights/Regulations/etc. You cant fire an idiot for f***ing things up, how can they fire a well respected employee, especially when the company knew the poopstorm that was to follow it. We dont have all the details, and we wont. we just have the typical company propaganda that may be true to a degree, but there is always unknowns that will remain that way.

Life sucks, bad things happen to good people, and bigwig companies will always remain.

Great to hear that, Bob. I have been in the corporate world for going on 7 years now and to find a boss who would actually go to bat for you is refreshing. I lost one of my first jobs being out in the real world by someone who did not go to bat at all for me and just looked out for herself. All the weekends I came in to help out and all the times I helped her out, were for nothing.

Sounds like Jeff was a good manager. It's a shame things transpired the way they did.

goddammit....

I am depressed over the fact that Jeff is gone still... please convince him to stay on the website at least, and to post Blogs and Video Blogs, haha. We must have more.

Listening to the GS staff on the Hotspot was a sad/happy thing. It was good to know that they were all human and good friends and hear about the good times... at the same time it was sad because of the circumstances with which they were meeting... Great post Bob.

What was the review you messed up on?
Posted 12/06/2007 4:02pm
That post just made his firing all the more sad. I'll definitely miss Jeff.

EDIT: Also, I remember the issue you're talking about. Metroid Prime: Hunters, right? Ironically, I was one of those ticked fanboys that thought it was underrated... and actually I still stand by that. For a handheld DS game, Hunters really is a great game from every aspect. http://www.gamespot.com/ds/action/dsmetroidprimehunters/review.html?om_act=convert&om_clk=gssummary&tag=summary%3Breview&page=2
