Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic

I am currently playing "Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic." I am really enjoying the story of the game. Unfortunately, I wish I could say the same about the gameplay. It is fairly simple enough to move from one chapter to the next with how it plays. I cannot say I enjoy the whole 'd20' combat system. It is a form of RPG combat programming that feels more tedious than enjoyable. This is just what I think of it, so for those of you who may swear by how great it is, please don't hold this against me. I trust you can understand my freedom to state how I feel about it. I know it is an RPG, but perhaps it there could've been more action on how we control the actions/attacks of the characters. I can see the combat animations on the screen, but whether or not a 'hit' took place is based on how the virtual d20 rolled. I would prefer the control of our Jedi, or Dark Jedi, return to the hands of the Gamer. I find it almost rediculous when what appears to be a direct hit on the enemy on screen does not register as an official 'hit' due to the unseen d20. With all due respect to people who actually go out and Role Play, I feel that the d20 should be left in the real world of Roly Playing with the figures and Dungeon and Drangon and such. In addition to fairly tolerable gameplay is the Heads Up Display. In the options menu, you can choose to turn off the dialog text that appears at the bottom of the screen; however, you don't have the option to turn off the HUD, or make adjustments that would make for a more cinematic experience. Also, it would've been great if we had more freedom with the camera, a la 'Splinter Cell.' For all the loyal fans of KOTOR, if you do detect a negative tone in what I've typed in this blog, please do not think that I do not enjoy the game. I really do enjoy the story thus far. Being the gamer that I am, I feel inclined to disapprove of the the combat mechanics being taken out of the hands of the gamer. Gameplay wise, I feel more strain in micro-managing the feats and powers of my party, rather than exploring the vast galaxy of the Old Republic.

About Me

Although I look for great graphics in a video game, I can't help but seek out a great story. Games with a great storyline and more than tolerable gameplay are always fun, despite graphical shortcomings.
