Oh Tekken 6...
I don't know what to say about this game. I should hate it, but it's quite the opposite.
I have been ignoring every other game I have for this. It's always "I'll play Tekken for about 10 minutes then maybe some Ratchet or Uncharted 2." That turns into about 2 -3 hours of Tekken.
Let me preface this by saying I played Tekken 3 as a kid, dabbled in Tekken Tag and then forgot about the series until December 2007 when I picked up Tekken 5 for my PSP. I got so hooked on it. I played every day, sometimes long periods of time, sometimes short. (Note: My PSP was broken from February to October of this year) Needless to say, I couldn't wait for Tekken 6.
I was anticipating it last year until they dropped the bomb and delayed it... again. I don't really care that it came to the 360, but I blame the 360 for having it delayed a year.
Anyway, like I said, I should hate this game or at least be horribly disappointed by it. It has less modes the the PSP game, the online is laggy as hell, Scenario Campaign is kind of lame and frustrating, the trophies are weak, the load times are horrible, and the end boss is a new level of cheapness and frustration.
Less modes then the PSP: I don't get this. No bowling?
No dojo mode? No gold rush? No quick battle? And the biggest one, NO command attack?
Online: It could have been endless replayable to real people but it's such a different game. You have think ahead, I hated it. I lost all the matches I played, killing my confidence. I'm sure the patch will fix everything...
Scenario Campaign: Remember Tekken Force mode? That sucked. Here's the new version. The AI has to be so dumbed down to deal with how Tekken can't control with multiple targets. The story is EXTREMELY lame and boring. Who effing cares? I skipped every cutscene, something I only do in Resident Evil 5. The saving grace of this mode is how you can hit bears with a pipe like a baseball bat. It's hilarious.
Also the loot kept me coming too.
That said, I beat that mode, all 47 levels, today.
Even this one. Biggest pain ever.
Trophies: Not the biggest problem, but seeing as all but 13 deal with with the SC mode is disappointing. I was looking forward to setting some long term goals and having some goals in general. Not so much because I almost have my platinum.
Load times: Without the install, it's like 20 seconds to fight and the PS3 sounds like it's choking on the disc. With it, the game is a lot better but still there's so much loading! How in the hell does a beautiful game like Uncharted 2 not having any visible loading WITH NO INSTALL?
The End Boss, Azazel: All Tekken bosses have been powerful but always within the rules of Tekken. Not Azazel. **** this thing.
He can't be thrown, can BLOCK WHILE ATTACKING, has some cheap combos, and can fly and slam you in the face. The block while attacking is the biggest one as you can't tell if he's blocking or not and he can attack as you check. He's just a pain in the butt. If he couldn't block while attacking, it would fix him as those other things are smaller in scope.
The thing that "saves" this game is the core fighting, which is the best I've played. The new bound system is really fun and gives another dimension to the combat. Just most things around it are questionable. I think MGS4 had a shorter dev cycle. That boggles my mind.
With all that said you'd think I'd hate it. I just can't get enough, ironically. I can see me playing this on and off for a very long time. The fighting is so good which all I really wanted I guess.
Has there been a game like this for you? A game where you shouldn't like it or has been really disappointing but you love it?
Also how's Tekken as a series and Tekken 6 to you? I'm curious to see who likes Tekken here.
Thanks and later!

Comments
Tekken on the other hand, I also fond of the series. Got everyone except this one. Not because I grew out of it - No - but mainly because COD:MW2 and ACII are both so near to each other, getting tekken 6 would seriously endanger my budget - Plus, Christmas is coming where I have to spend allot of money on other people, especially my GF. Meaning, Tekken 6 will have to wait... May be after Christmas when my end of year bonus gets paid out. lol
Anyway, neat blog.
The boat level is one of the best levels ever in a game. Every time I play it, I spend at least 2 hours on it.
That's very selfless of you.
Assassin's Creed 2... how did you feel about AC1? AC1 burned me but I'm coming back. I think they have it this time... I hope.
Thanks for the compliment.
Another example is Spider-Man 3 for the PlayStation 3. Honestly, it is one of the WORST games I have ever seen/played, and my brother hates it too. Yet, he goes and spends $20 on the collector's edition of the game a few weeks ago, despite having finished it before and knowing how horrendous it is with it's attempts at trying to be like God of War.
I dunno. I've never had any experiences like that, I guess. Killzone 2 might come into this though, because I liked the game until the last couple of chapters. I liked the graphics and sound, but I hated the weapons and dodgy characters and crappy story. The missions were predictable, yet I enjoyed them. That game was just filled with contradictions for me.
As for the Tekken series, I'm alright with it. I don't hate it, but I don't love it.
As for Tekken 6, its not my type of game, I'm more of the guns blazing guy, than a hand-to-hand fighting style kind of guy
Glad your enjoying it though
I have yet to try out Tekken 6 though. I guess I should have waited to get new games until I felt I was "done" with Uncharted 2 and NGS2. I'll get around to playing everything though. That is pretty lame that they took a bunch of modes out. Even worse is that I really hope they aren't going to do what I suspect them of doing (which is releasing the modes later on via DLC for more $$$)
I'm not looking forward to that final boss Azazel though. Jinpachi on Tekken 5 was always a pain for me to kill since he would OHK me with those stupid orbs that he would shoot.
ACII should be and will be better - after all, the sequel is a chance to iron out the faults and flaws of the first. For one thing, missions are much more open - meaning, less restrictive to decrease to repetitiveness. Another, the Dev added it side quests to make the experience richer and again, to make the experience much less repetitive.
Anyway, you could only pick from two people. Lei and Jack 2, I think. You could fight against the whole roster, though. I remember really liking Lei's fighting style in that game I've since played a smidgen of Tekken 5 [PS2?] and tried to play as Lei there. Didn't work out so well. They changed him up a bit since his 2 counterpart.
Fighting games just aren't for me. I completely suck at them. The closest I get is Beat 'em Ups. And those are usually pretty few and far between.
I'm considering Soul Calibur IV, Street Fighter IV, BlazBlue, and I guess I'll throw Tekken 6 into the mix as well. I guess I have some more considerations to make now that Tekken is out, but I'm probably not gonna get a fighter very soon anyway.
In any case, thanks for the nice mini-review you have here ... I'll be sure to use it when I eventually end up making my decision.
It doesn't make much sense but you will know when it happens.
Ok that Spiderman thing doesn't make a lick of sense. WTF?
Killzone 2 doesn't seem like the same that T6 is to me. Do you keep playing it? I guess that might be the deciding factor. I don't know.
Yeah I wasn't too good (read: terrible) at SFIV so I gave it back to my friend. It is NOT noob friendly while I think Tekken totally is. You definitely have to put time into a fighter.
@M0wen10: I like guns blazing but I like to mix it up. Keeps it fresh ya know?
Would you be more interested if I said T6 has a gattling gun (even though it controls like crap...)?
I didn't mention the DLC thing but that's the first thing I thought of. I'd be mad if they did that but look at SCIV (same publisher), they had gratuitous DLC and it sucked.
Jinpachi, in my opinion, was perfectly done as a final boss. He was strong but had weaknesses and he played in the rules of Tekken. His fire ball was strong but counterable. Not so with Azazel. You see him charging up, move in for a quick counter but he blocks as you hit him, leaving you open to the move he was charging. Effing lame.
I also feel you on buying games on top of games. I'll get GOW collections and MW2 on top of all the games I have, none of which I'm done yet.
@Thomas-Crown: I'll break it down for you of what I thought of AC1. First third was some of the best gaming I've played. Second third was good. Last third was the worst part of gaming I think I've played. Between the repetitiveness and how easily you'd get caught, I started hating the game. It started to feel like a grind and the free running was the only cool in the last third.
AC1 was a good foundation but it needed a sequel.
That said, I can't wait for AC2. I see they know what they did wrong and they are gonna fix it. I'm stoked all over again.
I'll admit, you have me quite scared to fight this Azazel guy. Jinpachi OWNED me so badly on Tekken 5. This guy just sounds ridiculous.
I did have SC4 for awhile but ended up selling it to a friend. The DLC was lame though. I bought one of the costume packs and the perks for the items in that were worse than the ones I already had. Lame.
I really think you need to try to squeeze some NGS1+2 into your schedule. It's a blast to play. I know that will be hard though since you have a ton of games to play and have been waiting to play for a long time.
Haha, Tekken 6 has Jack 6. I guess every Tekken has a new model of Jack.
You should get T6 because it has a great brawler mode, Scenario Campaign.
@theslimdavylp: If those are your preference, I'd say Gamefly it. If it isn't your thing, don't spend you $60 unless you really like it. If I wasn't a fan, I'd be mad I spent the money.
@abdelmessih101: To me, a fighter is one of the best local competitive games out there. You don't have to split the screen (who likes that?) and it's just one on one. They are great to have around.
I've played varying amounts of the fighters listed and all are radically different. SFIV is good fun but it is NOT noob friendly. You're gonna need to sink time into it. The CPU spams throws (literally back to back to back to back) and the end boss is stupid hard.
Blazblue was very fun and I almost bought it. That's saying something because of my bias against anime style games. It isn't very well balanced but fun nonetheless.
I only played SCIV's demo and I hated it, but that's a taste thing.
You saw my thoughts about Tekken 6.
Fighting games are hard to pick. Choose wisely.
It's been different this past month as playing games in the morning is like a routine now. It's only for about 2 hours but they are so fun it's hard to stop.
If Jinpachi owned you, this guy is gonna s*** all over you. Hardcore.
"The DLC was lame though..." You said it yourself.
I do want to play NGS2 a lot (NGS1 was good but NGS2 hooked me more) but it's not my natural go to game now. If I have to tell myself to play a certain game, I won't. It feels like I'm forcing myself, which sucks.
Sorry again. I forgot to mention that he still likes Spider-Man 3.
I only borrowed it from my friend. The first few chapters I absolutely loved, but as I kept going through the game, it's flaws started showing. My number one complaint about the game, overall, would have to be the controls though. Especially when it comes to sniping while taking cover.
Street Fighter is a true arcade style fighter. I know that Tekken is still an arcade style fighter too, but SF has done it better for years. But yeah, SF IV relies heavily on it's fans, whereas Tekken is really up for anyone.
