Five by Five - Movie Edition

So, for those of you who remember, awhile back I made a blog that had my top 5 TV shows in my top 5 genres. If you didnt see it or dont remember, it is here. This time I will do the same with movies. This was even harder, since of my Top 120 movies 46% are sci-fi and 22% are fantasy. But I am only allowing myself to list 5 from each genre. I focus on sci-fi and fantasy in movies even more than I do with TV shows, so this list will be nowhere near what a straight Top 25 list would look like. The lowest movies on this list are not even on my Top 120. But it will still be a list of 25 movies I love very much. I think this makes things more interesting. I will not rate them out of 10 as I did with the TV shows, since on Flixster, my primary movie site, movies are rated on a 5 star system, so I will stick with that. And one more note, some of these were hard to stick under one genre. A lot of them are very strongly sci-fi, fantasy, and action, so I used my own descretion. And I wont be stating my reasons for loving these movies as I did before, since movies are more about quick thrills than TV is. I could explain why I love them, but not as easily, or in three words, as I did in my original Five by Five. And I am entirely aware that I really love some horrible movies. Wild Wild West and xXx are in the 119 and 120 spots on my Top 120, which are universally understood to be bad movies. I have no delusions about the quality of my list. I really love cheese. But there are still a lot of these that I think are excellent, i.e. Gladiator, The Matrix, and Sweeney Todd. Anything with a 5/5 rating is in my Top 50.

#1 - Science Fiction

Star Wars 4, 5, 6, 1, 2, 3 - 5/5

The Fifth Element - 5/5

Waterworld - 5/5

The Matrix - 5/5

Jurassic Park 1, 2 - 5/5

#2 - Fantasy

Pirates of the Caribbean 3, 1, 2 - 5/5

The Mummy - 5/5

The Princess Bride - 5/5

Indiana Jones 3, 1, 4, 2 - 5/5

Stardust - 5/5

#3 - Action (non-sci-fi/fantasy)

The Rock - 5/5

The Mask of Zorro - 5/5

A Knight's Tale - 5/5

Gladiator - 5/5

Batman Begins - 5/5

#4 - Animation

Aladdin - 5/5

Mulan - 5/5

Toy Story 1, 2 - 5/5

Monsters, Inc. - 5/5

The Prince of Egypt - 4.5/5

#5 - Musical (non-animation)

Sweeney Todd - 5/5

The Phantom of the Opera - 4.5/5

Moulin Rouge - 4.5/5

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory - 4/5

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang - 4/5

Enjoy.

All Things Doctor Who *edit*

I havent been here in awhile since I had been spending every waking moment watching Doctor Who. Well, I'm back but I havent gotten Doctor Who out of my system yet. Dont think I ever will actually. Doctor Who is now one of my fave shows. I already ordered a T-shirt online and I bought Planet of the Dead on blu-ray yesterday. My ringtone is currently the theme song and my morning alarm is currently the sound of the TARDIS (it was previously the Pushing Daisies music). I will buy all the boxsets eventually but I need to save money first. Watching Doctor Who brought me back to the TV I used to love and love again. Three important things for a show:

  • Chivalrous characters
  • Light mood
  • Rewatchability

Doctor Who has them all, as does my all time fave, SG-1. I'm so glad to be back to that. I didnt realize how unimpressive the shows I have been watching lately really were until I went back and compared them to my old criteria. I feel much happier after watching Doctor Who than anything currently on TV. And although David Tennant cannot compare to Michael Shanks on my scale of celebrity crushes, Daniel Jackson does have competition in The Doctor for awesomest character.

Opening Credits Sequences

So, I've been meaning to do this for awhile, then thuginthemaking had a blog about her favourite theme songs which reminded me about this, so I've finally done it! These are my favourite opening credits sequences overall, considering music, visuals, editing, voice overs or whatever else might be included. I can only judge ones I've seen. There are probably better credits out there, but this is what I got.

10. Andromeda Season 1

All the other shows I will be including are for all their seasons. Even the shows that change their credits each year, as long as they are arranged by the same people, they will usually always be great. But Andromeda is the only one I am including for only one season. The season 1 opening credits for Andromeda was much more fun and upbeat, and gives you an accurate feeling of what the show is like. But for the shows last 4 seasons, the credits had a really corny and cheap sounding song which was very unfortunate.

9. Fringe

I love everything about this sequence. The visuals are great and quick and keep your attention. I love the addition of all the different topics the show might cover flashing across the screen. Suspended animation, artificial intelligence, psychokinesis, dark matter. There's no way someone could miss what the show is about from watching the credits. I also really love the way the title assembles at the end. It looks really cool. And of course the song is awesome. I had the song as my ring tone for a long time when S1 aired. And according to wikipedia, J. J. Abrams wrote it himself.

8. Dexter

Anyone who is a Dexter fan probably knows, there is just something about that theme song. Its oddly haunting, although if you didnt know better it would sound cheery. I remember when I first started watching Dexter I thought the soundtrack sounding like something out of Pushing Daisies. And of course the editing and the clips are awesome. They made everything about Dexter's morning routine look sinister. I love the ending, when Dexter locks his door and walks away with a little smile on his face, pretending to be a normal guy.

7. Firefly

I'm really not a fan of country music or western lifesty|e but the song is just too perfect to deny. And again, as with Fringe, it was written by the director which always makes it extra impressive to me. It sets a perfect mood for the series along with the clips, which also provide a great showcase for the characters.

6. Rome

The Rome theme song is an amazing song on its own, and admittedly, its most of the reason I chose to include this sequence. The visuals are really interesting and portray life in ancient Rome, and the living graffiti really keeps your attention. The above link is for S1.

5. Angel

The Angel theme song is one of my favourites. This is another one that I had as my ring tone for awhile. Whenever you hear it you instantly want to watch Angel again. I love how this sequence captures the heroic spirit of the show, especially from 0:05 - 0:18, and then again at the end with, what is probably my favourite part of the sequence every year, 0:39. And then of course, the whoosh of Angel's coat. The above link is for S3.

4. The Tudors

I love this theme song even more than Rome's, and on top of that, this sequence has even better visuals and editing. It really is beautiful. There are a lot of really fast flashes, lots of really beautiful shots of the country, the castles, and the people, and some random artistic shots, such as a cradle just sitting in the middle of the forest (although that was S2). Its so artistic. The above link is for S3.

3. Stargate Atlantis

The Atlantis theme song reminds me of the original SG-1 theme, just really updated. Its perfect for the series; similar to SG-1 but updated. The effects added give it a fresher feeling as well. The transitions look cool and a lot of great clips were used. I especially like 0:33. The above link is for S2.

2. Babylon 5

Babylon 5's amazing music perfectly sets the mood, no matter what that mood may be. The credits were extremely different every year and always with a different song, to prepare you for what was ahead. But they all followed the same formula. The first half of the credits is a voice over/summary of the season with clips, and the second half is the actual credits, season 2, 4, and 5 also had clips in the second half. My favourite is S3 for several reasons. One being that it was the best season for the show as well. The summary was very dramatic and fitting. The music in the second half of the S3 credits is my favourite of all the seasons. I also like the way they showed each character as their credits came up. It was different. The above link is for S3.

1. Farscape

I might go as far as to say that Farscape's opening credits is part of the reason why I love the show so much. The show has such sty|e and energy which is perfectly portrayed in the opening sequence with the use of effects, transitions, and colour. It is also a very emotional and dramatic show, which is evident in John's voice over, especially in S3, which is my favourite for the credits.

"My name is John Crichton
[I'm lost]
An astronaut
[Shot through a wormhole]
In some distant part of the Universe
[I'm trying to stay alive]
Aboard this ship
[This living ship]
Of escaped prisoners
[My friends]
If you can here me
[Beware]
If I make it back
[Will they follow?]
If I open the door
[Are you ready?]
Earth is unprepared
[Helpless]
For the nightmares
[I've seen]
Or should I stay
[Protect my home]
Not show them
[You exist]
But then you'll never know
[The wonders I've seen]"

The sequence is similar each year, but John's voice over changes to reflect the changes he has gone through. In S1 and 2 his voice over sounded desperate. All he wanted was to get home. But by S4 Moya is his home, and he just wants to protect Earth from his new enemies. The song also changed from S1 and 2, to S3 and 4. Although they both have Farscape's sty|e and energy, S3 and 4 are more fitting for the emotion of John's voice overs and the seasons themselves. The above link is for S3.

Here are some other opening sequences I enjoy but didnt make the list, in no particular order (I couldnt find them all on Youtube):

Bones
Buffy the Vampire Slayer
NCIS
Kings
Sanctuary
SG-1
Warehouse 13
Torchwood
Chuck
True Blood

A Tribute to Michael Shanks (aka Danny boy picspam!)

So, I'm starting with the oldest first. "Fire and Water" was a S1 epi that was considered weak, but still a fangirl fave cuz there's lots of wet Danny. He was quite young still and looking very pretty boyish. Please excuse the haircut, it was 1997.

He made a guest appearance in Andromeda in 2001. The woman who he is kissing, having virtual sex with, and can be seen in the background of the center pic is his real-life wife. They met while filiming the epi.

Dr. Daniel Jackson, aka Danny boy , over the years. Although all these pics happen to be from seasons 4 - 10. The epi with him in the leather outfit on the left is one of my faves. Total awesomeness! I'm aware the big glasses he wears in the earlier seasons look ridiculous, but I got used to them. I dont even see them now.

More of Daniel over the years. Season 4 -10.

This is a tribue to the fact that Daniel keeps dying. It has become a running joke on the show. He has died a total of 4 times, not counting alternate timelines, alternate realities, various copies of him, and near death experiences. And FYI, the quote that says, "What, again?" was actually said by Adam Baldwin. He had a guest appearance in one epi. Just in case you wanted to know.

"Prometheus Unbound" is one of my fave epis. It heavily features Daniel but also introduces Vala, played by Claudia Black who I happen to be in love with. Lots of fun.

This is a reference to another running joke on the show, as well as a bonus prize for Ben fans. The fact that Michael Shanks and Ben Browder look so much alike and starred in two hit sci-fi series that aired at the same time, and eventually in the same show after Farscape was canceled and Ben was cast in SG-1.

Photos from The Ark of Truth, the SG-1 movie that was released on DVD last spring. It featured a lot of mythology and archeology, so, naturally, a lot of Daniel.

Promos from season 7, 9, 10, and The Ark of Truth.

From his recurring role in S2 of Burn Notice.

Promos from The Ark of Truth.

Various personal promos from over the years. From 1998 to 2009. The oldest being the two black and white ones. The photo with the sword was from a performance of Hamlet he did at the Stanley Theatre in Vancouver, in which he played the title role. The most recent photo is the bottom middle. Still gorgeous IMO.

Appearances at various conventions. In the photo in the bottom left he is not smoking, cuz smoking is not hot. It actually looks more like a lollipop.

More conventions, but goofing off and lookin smokin.

So, I hope you enjoyed that at least a fraction of how much I did. I'm gonna go take a cold shower now.
