Iron Maiden's Powerslave is a timeless disc filled with lush melodies, fast guitars, and a taste of Egyptian lore. From Aces High to Rime of the Ancient Mariner, the songs remain consistent and similar in atmosphere but diverse enough to stand by themselves. Here is a song by song review:
Aces High: The perfect opener to the album. Dave and Adrians twin guitar attack will get your adrenaline pumping, and Bruce's "siren" vocals make you think are in the middle of an intense air battle. Arguably the fastest song on the cd, it opens with a bang and gets you excited for what is to come.
Minutes to Midnight: The tempo slows up a bit on this one, but the spirit only grows in size. With symbolic lyrics dealing with the cold war, it provides some of the best song writing of Maiden's career. This song is nearly perfect.
Losfer Words: Instrumental. Don't let it worry you, this is just as good as any song on the cd. This song is genius, a three minute long build up to a beautiful guitar harmonizing climax. This track doesn't need vocals for you to enjoy it, it stands by itself as one of the best on the cd.
Flash of the Blade: The worst song on the cd. But that does not mean it isn't great, because I never skip over this one. It's only problem is that it doesn't have anything that gives it that special something that the rest of the songs have. Great to sing along to, great lyrics, its just a simple rocker.
Duellists: A six minute long sword fight, Maiden acheives what few bands can: write incredibly corny lyrics yet avoid the entire pretentiousness that haunts many bands. This song has everything that makes this album awesome: great, fast guitar work, an exciting atmosphere, amazing vocals, and (imo) most importantly, the ability to take you somewhere. Like a good book, it opens your imagination, you can sit back, close your eyes, and imagine you are right there. It may seem silly, but its true.
Back in the Village: Why people don't like this song is beyond me. It is easily one of the best songs on the album. This song is the epitome of excitement and anticipation. Excellent lyrics, and Bruce's best vocal work. Theres even a hidden message in there if you can find it.
Powerslave: The title track, this is truly epic. Dealing with Egyptian Pharoahs and Gods, Bruce sings with passion and power. The clean breakdown reminiscent to early Metallica is beautiful and magestic. And one hell of a solo.
Rime of the Ancient Mariner: They had to save the best for last. Thirteen minutes long, this is the retelling of a two hundred year old poem of the same name. A great story, awesome music, everything about this song is perfect, except for the somewhat rushed ending. About nine minutes in, Steve Harris brings the song back to life from it's slower, more narrative phase, and you can feel your pulse speed up along with the tempo. Great tune.
So there you have it, Powerslave. Everyone should own this cd, none of you will be disapointed.
