Noise from the Basement Skye Sweetnam
"Underappreciated"
Skye Sweetnam's Noise from the Basement is packed with plenty of hooks and several memorable melodies. More than half of the album consists of fast paced rhythms. And that's what makes NftB so gratifying. Skye's already discovered her niche in music so early in her career. Like her predecessor Avril Lavigne, Sweetnam doesn't have an exceptional voice but it fits well with the genre she sings. Speedy openers like "Number One" and "Tangled Up in Me" confirm that Sweetnam specializes in executing pop/rock anthems. There are some well written numbers like the catchy "Billy S." and snappy "Hypocrite." The main similarity (and step-back) shared between the 13 tracks is the constant repetition of lyrics. But this minor flaw should be considered minimal if not completely ignored. She's a fifteen year old song writer and performer who's taking her first leap into music. It's safe to say the pros on Skye Sweetnam's first album easily outnumber the cons.

Crush Rock/Pop
"Trendy"
Key Songs: Jellyhead We Got The Beat

As stated earlier, Crush was not a very well known band back in the late 90s. I myself stumbled upon possibly their biggest hit, Jellyhead, on a Jock Jams CD. The groups lyrics weren't spectacular but their songs held catchy tunes that would have probably made anyones foot tap had the group been more successful on the charts. Their self-titled CD, Crush is jam packed with songs that suggest the two lead singers are flirting with trouble (He's Stupid, Bloody Nose) and try to show affection through their songs quite a few times throughout the CD (Love's Hold, Luv'd Up). The groups remake of The Go-Go's "We Got The Beat" is probably one of the album's most interesting moments following closely behind their lead single Jellyhead. All in all, Crush is a decent attempt but not enough to make this band a keeper.
