Tapas 9: Back in the Saddle
Hello all. Miss me?
"Who the hell are you?" is the proper response.
It's been an odd couple of months to say the least, but I suppose it's time to dust myself off and get back to one of the things I enjoy: boring the crap out of people with pointless speculation and aimless rambling. It's good to be back.
A special thanks to those of you who took the time to notice my absence. It really means a lot.
Alright. Let's get this show on the road.
Dungeons, Dragons and DLC
Though johnsteed7beat me to the punch on this one (curses! foiled again!), I just thought I'd put my two cents in on the topic. If you haven't discovered this yet, the treatment of DLC in Dragon Age: Origins is….discouraging….to say the least. Just to bring you up to speed:
There is a character placed in the game for the sole purpose of selling you the "Warden's Keep" download. You'll find him relatively early, and the conversation you'll have with him goes something like this: he asks you to help him, and then the following dialogue option pops up
"(Download New Content) Give me a minute, and I'll help you."
As johnsteed7 stated, after selecting this option you are then booted to the main menu so you can buy the content.
Now, this isn't a huge deal. It's not going to give me cancer or steal my car. But for me, one of the most crucial aspects of an RPG, what separates the ho-hum from the great, is how deeply I can lose myself in both the world and the story as I'm playing the game. This encounter put me right back on my couch.
Again, nothing earth shattering. It's just a shame. It shows a lack of respect for the gamer, and a lack of respect for the story. It also concerns me. As time goes by, am I going to be treated to more characters that do the same thing? As new content becomes available, will this world slowly fill with micro-peddlers? Will I eventually see an entire shop placed in town just to sell me crap that should be kept in the main menu and out of the game?
And what does all of this mean for Mass Effect? Will we see the same crap pop up there as well? I sure as hell hope not.
Now, on the subject of Bioware's culpability, I'm more inclined to place the blame on EA. Why? Well, if memory serves, they did the same thing in the original Godfather game. If I remember correctly, you could meet NPCs that would sell you in-game items for real-world currency.
Sigh.
Other Stuff
---Tried Afro Samurai a few months back. Just couldn't get into it. Though the visuals are amazing, it was just a little too dull for my taste. I've never been a huge fan of hack-n-slashers, so I guess that's what I get for trying to break out of my mold. That'll teach me.
---Borderlands is a mindless good time. The story, if you can call it that, is one of the most anemic in years, but if you're looking to run around blasting things this is your game.
---Can you really call your boycott a success if you disband before the product hits store shelves so that you can run out and buy it?
---How 'bout them Texans? I've been a fan for years. I have a thing for underdogs. Though the 105 penalty yards didn't help, I can't believe they missed out on overtime because of a blown field goal. Ah well. I dig the Colts too, so I guess it was win-win.
---Staph infections are not fun. I had an in-grown fingernail that got infected.Fortunately, antibiotics knocked it right out.
---Staphylococcus finds it's origins in the Greek word for "a bunch of grapes." Thank you, medicinenet!
---My dog is blind. He bumps into walls.
Wow. I think I am officially out of ideas. Thanks as always for reading. Hope everyone is doing well out there.

Comments
And I think the Ravens had almost as many penalty yards as the Texans did yesterday.
I have not tried Dragons Age yet, but that DLC thing sounds like a joke.
Carry on.............!
@MsCortana: It could be worse. You could be like me where chewing gum and walking presents a serious challenge.
@Gen_Warbuff: Thanks man. Glad to be back. Dragon Age is a great game. I just wish they'd handled the DLC a little differently. And all of the penalties made me sad. I think they started off the first quarter with three "off-sides" calls in a row. Ah well.
I find the "go to downloadable content guy," pretty upsetting myself. Like you, I need to be ensconced in the world of what I'm playing. Look, I'm a medieval elf on a mythical quest to end the uprising of- oh wait gotta hit the internet to download some add-ons." *sigh*
I root for underdogs too- though naturally I couldn't root for the Texans against my home-state team. Rooting for underdogs is a bad habit I get myself into I think. 95% of the time it causes heartbreak. (Stupid Cubs.)
I don't know whether to feel terrible for the dog and be sad or channel my inner cave man and laugh.
Sorry to hear about your dog. My German Shepherd is not completely blind yet. He is going deaf too.
Good to see you back!
I don't have a dog or watch NFL but staph infections would suck.
I think before I leave this world for a permanent vacation in DA:O, I need to finish off a couple other short games. I know that DA:O will be a long-time keeper anyway.
I guess it could be worse though, you could play WoW and pay $15 per month for new content, then have them create new pets (that provide no advantages I should add) for $10. WoW may be a money pit, but that's abuse of your consumers.
They better not try and sell me any thing more in Mass Effect 2, all ready i either have to get a 360 or a gaming pc just to play it and it dosn't seem right to put so much effort into creating a believable world just to yank players out of it with poor marketing ploys.
@MJoanne: Thanks MJo. German Shepards are amazing animals. I've always wanted one, but I worry about the "back legs" issue a lot of them seem to develop later in life.
@Samson089: I just hope there's a negative enough reaction that they keep the content where it belongs from here on out: in the dashboard. I have no problems with developers putting out new content. I just don't want to see ads for it in my dialogue options.
@PixelHunter: Probably a wise choice to shelf it if you have other games you want to finish. DA is a serious time-suck.
@mahoney23: I am really, really hoping that ME2 doesn't have the same type of character in it. It really does just kill the immersion.
@payne6705: Here's hoping this character will be the last of his kind. I'm afraid he won't be though.
You're pulled out of the game to purchase DLC? That's just stupid. If you want to download stuff, you'll go to the main menu or the marketplace, where it's supposed to be. Stupid EA. It's the little details that count, you know. I hope ME2 doesn't have this kind of things.
I've got to try Borderlands. The cover art is so fun. I'll probably buy it before Brutal Legend. Or after. It will be between my next 2 purchases. Nail infections suck. They are pretty painful, and annoying. I feel sorry for your dog, but my human behavior is impulsing me to laugh. I won't though. Nice reading you again.
And my friend used to have a blind dog, I think they're so sweet
Is it really you?
You're almost talking me out of DA:O as its a game that I was really looking forward to but won't have time to play it until well into 2010. I just feel like games now need to come with fine print so we can all see how we're getting screwed.
@Transilvanien: In the main menu, there is a section in the bottom left hand corner that tells you when new content is available. I don't understand why it has to go any farther than that. And don't feel bad about feeling like you need to laugh about the dog. I have the same reaction sometimes.
@DEWMAN08: Dragon Age is a lot like Mass Effect in a lot of ways, so if you enjoyed running around as Shepard you'll most likely enjoy DA.
@Kloud_450: It's pretty upsetting. I wasn't as irritated when I saw it in the Godfather, but it was still pretty annoying.
@Dinkyfish: That's funny. That's always been a pet peeve of mine too. Nothing like meeting Elmeena the Elven Queen in the heart of the Foresaken Wood only to have her say something like "If you wish to vanquish your foes, you must mash the B button."
@laughlyn12: I'm back foo! Hehehe. Don't get me wrong about Dragon Age. It really is a great game. It's just this one aspect that really got under my skin. I'm really hoping this isn't a trend.
