Many have dismissed Green Garstide and his chameleonic pop/funk machine as mere sugary commercialist pandering in comparison with the echelons of Scritti Politti's early, post-punk Marxist machine, but I stand firm to differ in the most determined way possible.
I admit, I have never been a particular fan of Green's earlier escapades, and I label myself a "fan" of his work despite only truly appreciating the heavily commercial period of Scritti Politti in between 1985 and 1991 - but I maintain, despite these perhaps childish pictures I have built of the Politti's full picture, that Provision embodies perhaps their best work, and to this day (something which will confuse or perhaps even rile the most ardent Green enthusiast) I maintain that it is... the best album ever made.
Every song on this album is built to absolute (ho ho) perfection - some will make you want to dance, some will amke you want to cry (not in the negative sense however), and all of them will get you dewy-eyed with late-80s nostalgia - though I find it extremely hard to portray just how sweet, how romantic and how meltable-on-the-tongue fabulous this LP is, I urge you to at least dip your toe into the water and give Provision a try - who knows, you might be pleasantly surprised.
I certainly was.
