Weekly Update #228

Random notes:

+ While I'm not totally sold on all the H1N1 hysteria, it's probably a greater threat to children than the average adult. Our local health service outlets have really been on the ball about this, posting tips for flu prevention in any public building I can think of. Sure, it's the obvious stuff like coughing into your elbow and not rubbing your eyes with dirty hands, but where I'm from common sense is not innate. If you want to get that special flu shot, go ahead, I'm not stopping you.

+ If the Republicans make any gains in today's gubernatorial races --and they probably will-- they won't be of much consequence. For all the media attention the New Jersey and Virginia governor's races are receiving, it's just two states. In the event that Doug Hoffman beats Bill Owens for the 23rd congressional district in New York, it won't rattle the status quo in Washington, at least not now. Whether or not President Obama's waffling public support will effect the 2010 midterms is still anyone's guess.

+ When did Chicago turn into Seattle? I haven't had time to do any research, but I think October was the rainiest month in my hometown in recent memory. Between the wind, the torrential downpours, the leaves falling, driving around has made for a sticky situation. This is sandwiched between an unusually cool winter and what is expected to be our third brutal winter in a row. I'd like to hear what the global warming skeptics have to say about this...

+ The number of names on the FBI's list of presumed terrorists in the US has exceeded the population of Minneapolis, MN. That's a scary thought.

+ After starting the year 2-2, my fantasy football team is reeling from a four-game schnied. I pin my roster's woes on two mistakes that I made on draft day: picking three quarterbacks (two of whom are can't-cut; the other is Jay Cutler) and drafting too many players with the same bye week. Uneasy lies the head that wears the crown, since I'm also the commish and half the league thinks I'm deliberately phoning it in.

+ Would anyone give a hoot about Chastity "Chaz" Bono's gender reassignment surgery if she weren't the daughter of Sonny and Cher? For all her public battles, did anyone check to see if she has any discernible talent that would make anyone besides Mary Hart bat an eyelash?

+ Baseball in November? Come on...

Hi Stuart, Actually I fall into that first level risk group of Diabetes and Asthma. I think you are right about it being a bigger risk for youngsters in general as anyone 64 or older was probably exposed to a similar strain previously and have anti-bodies. I personally still have not been able to get the shot yet. We've had two pregnant women die here in AZ because of complications from the flu. Right on about the gubernatorial races. The weather here has been all over the place as well. That's a weird and disturbing number on the terrorist list. Baseball should be played year round! I am watching the Arizona Fall League out here. Lucas May (Dodger catcher) went 3 for 4 with a double and home run last night. Yes, I am obsessed. Sorry, Jeffery

Normally the weather in Milwaukee is similar to that of upper Illinois. It's chilly out, but not that rainy. It rained a bit last week though.

Thanks for the update. You are right about the H1N1 it is "reported" to affect younger adults than the elderly. I'm right there with you about baseball it seems it is almost year round anymore. I get tired of baseball always on lets get it over with and get to some real programs.

About all the rain - it's been nonstop here, too, since Labor Day. We went from drought conditions in the summer to burn bans and water conservation plans lifted. It rained at least fifteen inches in October and at least ten in September here. (And I live in TEXAS) Hope we get some snow.

It's strange with all the rain, we got alot of rain during the summer. Chastity? really? H1N1 hysteria. Not in support of the plan even if i fall in the age range.

Hi Stuart, always glad to drop in on your blogs

+I've never had a flu shot, and never plan on getting one. Online research will help anyone else understand why. I've had the flu twice in my whole life, and haven't had it in the last 15 years.

+I dunno if I would agree that 2 entire states of people choosing to go Right at this point isn't a significant statement.

+It's lunacy for anyone assert that global warming doesn't exist; the entire northern hemisphere of the world was covered by glaciers thousands of years ago. Maybe we could all feel better about things if we brought them and the ice age back.

+Bye weeks come for all sooner or later, and maybe that means your team will make a late run.

+The issue with Chaz isn't talent...she's the offspring of celebrities and us old folks used to see her on TV with her proud parents every week, and therein lies the interest. Personally, I don't care if she adds an extra appendage or not.
