The story of a junkie
I was talking to a girlfriend of mine yesterday about the new 2005 fall season shows. I was telling her that I needed to get another TIVO because with all of the new things on, there are more than 2 shows that I want to watch and/or record at the same time. She proceeded to remind me that when we met, about three years ago, I didn't even have a TV. Oddly enough, that was by choice; you see I had a seven year old whom I was sending to private school and doing everything necessary to protect him from the outside world, also, as a single parent, I had absolutely no free time to watch.
So, for about a year and a half, she would tell me all about the shows that she had watched the night before and what was happening in each of them. I didn’t really pay attention, as it didn’t really interest me. Fast-forward to early 2003 or so, on a whim, I went out and bought a 29-incher, and a VCR, so that my son could watch educational videos and I could watch movies on occasion. That went on for a couple months or so until another friend found out that I didn’t get any TV channels because I didn’t pay for a TV service, and I didn’t have an antenna. Well, they went out and bought me one and it was all downhill from there.
The first thing I watched was the two hour series finale of Dawson's Creek. My girlfriend had been hooked on it for years and had been practically acting out the whole show for me each week, so I thought I’d give it a try, having no idea that the show that I was watching was the series finale. Well, it doesn’t get any better than that, now does it? Just remember that I hadn’t watched a single TV show in three, maybe four years. I felt so bad that I missed the whole show. There began my slow descent into TV oblivion and absolute addiction.
I dabbled a bit with CSI, even though I had heard that it was a gateway show. A friend pressured me into trying Everwood, and that lead to experimenting with Friends and Gilmore Girls, but I am embarrassed to say that all it took was my very first taste of The OC and I was hooked. Late last year, I had a dealer come out to hook me up with satellite and TIVO.
Admitting I have a problem is the first step, so, there it is. And so it goes…
