The Wii has stalled? More like they hit a wall ..

.. and it took Mr. Iwata a long time before realizing this.

I saw this as soon as their 2009 E3 conference was over. Same recycled IP's from their first 3 years. Two Mario games, another Metroid game and ANOTHER Zelda game. It's hard for me, who grew up with the NES, to have to sit and watch this great company's games get watered down to a bunch to Wii musics, Wii fits get thrown at us along with tons of other uninteresting games.

Think.... What would Mario do?

They messed up with the friend code system. You can't even get a decent match started with friends 'cause you have to enter a different code for every game. All of the other features like Mii channel were fun to play with at first but were forgotten as quickly. Another big mistake was to pump out tons of accessories that no one's going to use after a while. I'm surprised that it took this long to create a 1:1 motion device. It should have been there from the start. Now we're going to have to wait another 2 years to actually make use of it for more games other than Red Steel 2 and that golf game. By that time they'll probably make a Wii HD.

I should have mailed them my article when I warned them about this last year. I basically predicted that this is going to happen if they didn't do anything. One year later and we still haven't heard anything from series such as Star fox, Kid Icarus, F-Zero, Bomberman (64 remake) A Real Pokemon RPG (or at least Snap), Breath Of Fire, Earthbound, Pilot Wings (We have motion controller for Christ sake) Skies of Arcadia, Donkey Kong, Luigi's mansion 2, Etrnal Darkness. Yup, I've been nothing but patient. But I can't wait forever.

Now, it might seem that I did nothing but bash the Wii so far. So before you judge me by this article, take a good look at all the games that I've finished until now. It's not about mature (rated) games. It's about supporting your system with great software. Don't rely only on third party developers to accomplish your goal. It's because of that, we ended up with games like Iron Chef America: Supreme Cuisine and My baby 1st steps.

And now, this is the result: Sluggish sales, core games migrating to other platforms (bought a PS3 slim in September) and an uncertainty if those promised games might still make it in this console generation (remember Twilight Princess?). With the recent price drop on all systems, consumers are thinking twice about which system to buy this Christmas (if they haven't bought one yet).

I hope they had some air bags installed when they hit that brick wall and that this serves as a slap in their face that gamers are not to be messed with. Your move, Nintendo.

Note: I did not write this article to compare systems. I wrote this article because, as a long time Nintendo fan, I feel that they have let down their core audience by offering us only a handful of great games.

What I really hate (don't get me wrong, I love my wii) is all of the extra peripherals they are expecting me to buy. It seems every time they come out with a new game it requires some new device as well. At least most of their first party games are top-notch, albeit slightly repetitive.

The Wii is definitely in trouble. Nintendo has focused on opening up new markets (a good business strategy), but instead of developing those markets they have a number of housewives waiting around for the next exercise game, or worse, kids (future market) getting bored of the shovelware so prevalent on the system.

I agree with you. Wheres our good old nintendo heroes? All were getting is a bunch of cheap third party crap that isn't any good.

Yes, I hate Wii. Nintendo has really gotten out of line. They were once amazing and now they are fools...well, let Sony and Microsoft take over, Nintendo had it's time.

these games are not as popular in Japan as they are in the states. i guess that is one reason why Nintendo hasn't really focused on them. i am sure that nintendo is more concerned about DS related issues than Wii. it sucks.

Nintendo has been failing since the N64

I agree with this blog's sentiments. Everything falls.

Awesome man, I just wrote a blog on this very same thing. I like your take on it, and I agree that it is foolish to completely disregard so many IPs. Donkey Kong hasn't seen a decent itteration in eternity (DOnkey Kong Beat game whatever the heck doens't count). Star Fox is screeming for a Wii game, and I loved Skys of Arcadia! But, Nintendo thinks you want ANOTHER Wii sports and ANOTHER Mario Galaxy and ANOTHER Metriod Prime (ok, so I am pretty exicted about that one). Anyways, Nintendo has got some work to do, as they have now found out that 60 year olds buying Wii Fit won't support them forever.

Oh, and I also just wrote a blog a couple days ago about a full pokemon RPG on the Wii! Lol, great minds think alike.

Good article though unless I'm mistaken, the Skies of Arcadia IP belongs to Sega. The first on Gamecube was just an enhanced port and not really a game made exclusively by Sega specifically for Nintendo's system. I agree there's a lack upcoming games of interest. After recently trying Muramasa, I'm anxious to see what Nintendo or third party developers can offer next for the Wii.

Yeah, I feel Nintendo has done this as well, Jerell. Anymore of just Mario, Zelda, and Metroid going down our throats, people will get tired of them. Hell, even though I have no hype for a Star Fox Wii (I might once it IS announced), I still wish there was one, with the throw in of Kirby, F-Zero and such. We got more variety last gen compared to this.

Wii's main weakness imo are; excessive cost for new parts (nunchuck + wiimote + motionplus + other accesories) and their refusal to make more games that can be used WITHOUT motion control. Brawl was great, it didn't require motion except to navigate menus. Thats what has ruined most of the wii games Ive played, trying to integrate motion control where it isn't necessary, or fun.

I think the problem is that everyone that will/can get a Wii already has access to one. Just look at their sales numbers.
Posted 11/01/2009 8:34pm
I believe many people are spoiled when it comes to video game graphics. Yes its a big part nowadays but that doesnt determine how good a game is. Nintendo doesnt have to be visually as good as a ps3 or an xbox360 but they really F'cked up this gen. I honestly think the remote is a gimmick and many people bought into that. Now some people realize that the nintendo console is missing the most important thing... A LOT of good games. Nintendo needs to step it up.

I also have been a Nintendo fan since the NES and I don't really like the Wii as well. The thing is that the N64 and Gamecube were not selling as well as it's competitors, so Nintendo tried to appeal to a different audience. With the motion-controls of the Wii, Nintendo grabbed the attention of the casual market and that's how the Wii became sucessful selling console.

I saw this coming since some time ago...

It's the same problem that Nintendo has run into for the last few generations; they put out great hardware but they don't have the games to support it. Really all the Wii needs is a solid catalog of games to cement it as the top system of this generation; but once again Nintendo has come up a bit short. The X-Box 360 has, in a lot of ways, run into the same problem, but to a lesser extent; the PS3 has finally fixed its price issues and now has a catalog of enough exclusive games to make it a much stronger contender than it was at launch. Those that thought this generation was already decided are finding that they might be wrong, which is good for the industry, it's a reminder that it isn't over until it's really over.

I completely agree with everything you said. I mean, Endless Ocean? Really? What happened to Donkey Kong??? I think that the Wii has wasted so much of it's potential. It could've been so innovative and unique, but instead it's just blowing it all. I'm saving up for my PS3, because the Wii is dead.

I definitly agree. I started out gaming with NES and I've been hooked since. I own a Wii but I rarely play it because after the initial interest I sadly lost interest. I still play now and then with the little siblings because it's good for family time, but for myself I find myself wanting more from gaming and I'm not by any means a hardcore gamer. I'm a casual gamer and definitly don't keep track of the market near as close as you do, but I haven't used my Wii very much at all although I'm hoping that in time some games come out for it that interest me more than what I see in the game stores now. Until then I have my ps3 and I'm more than happy with that, but I started out with Nintendo so they will always have a place in my gaming interest. Anyways, sorry for the mini rant, thank you for the informative blog, it was a very nice read. Take care and I hope things are well with you.
