Disappointing year for games...
This year has been a huge disappointment to me. Sure, there have been a lot of good games released, but none of them really interest me. So far there are only four games that have been released this year that I'm planning on getting. Those four are Madworld, Condemned 2: Bloodshot, Infamous, and the only one that I have so far, F.E.A.R. 2. At least next year looks much better with Bayonetta, Alan Wake, Bioshock 2, Dementium II, and No More Heroes 2.
Also I have decided to get rid of some games. I decided a long time ago that I wanted to just collect every PS1 game, and because of this I have some really terrible PS1 games. I came to the conclusion that I want to keep only the games that I like and will actually play more than once. I've gotten rid of a lot terrible games that I own (including Perfect Weapon and Dark Messiah of Might and Magic: Elements. Yes, I no longer own those awful game).
Last weekend, I bought Timesplitters: Future Perfect. It's a good game, but I don't like as much as Timesplitters 2. Timesplitters 2 is much better. The challenges are terrible in Future Perfect, and I don't like the placement of health kits and armor in Future Perfect. They seem to be placed off the beaten path and some times placed in strange places.
My favorite fight scenes. Vol. I
A few weeks ago I watched James Rolfe's (better known as AVGN) top 10 Jackie Chan fights, and there were some good fights in, and I decided to make a blog about some of my favorite fight scenes.
#1 Twin Dragons
Actors: Jackie Chan, Maggie Cheung
This is a movie that I recently saw, and not far into the movie is this great fight scene where Jackie Chan fights a group of thugs with a microphone stand. After losing the stand, he uses the microphone to kick some butt. Near the end of the battle, Jackie Chan lands on a table and break the glass in the table in half then one of the thugs picks up the glass and smashes it over Jackie's head ending this funny, but still great fight scene.
#2 Hard Boiled
Actors: Chow Yun Fat, Tony Leung
Hard Boiled has several great fights, but the final battle at the hospital is pure epic. Unlike most fights scene this one is long and clocks out at about thirty minutes, but it involves inspector Tequila and a few officers fighting crooks at a hospital. What makes it so enjoyable is the camera work and the flow of the battle unlike most movies were it is a quick scene then jumps, this movie features scenes that can last up to three minutes or more just following one character. If you have not seen this movie, check it out ASAP! This is definitely a must see!
#3 The Protector
Actors: Tony Jaa
Like Hard Boiled this movie has some great fight scenes, but the best is easily the staircase fight. It begins with Tony Jaa running into a resturant then thugs rush towards him then he kicks their butts, but it doesn't end. He starts going up the stairs and continues the fight, but now people are getting thrown over the rails or are getting beaten up. This fight scene is incredible.
#4 The Legend of Fong Sai Yuk
Actors: Jet Li
This movie has some great fights scenes, but the best is the battle that takes place on top of a crowd. Jet Li is fighting this woman, and if he beats her he gets to marry her daughter. But if he hits the ground, he fails. So after getting knocked off, his friends catch him then the woman jumps onto some of the people in the crowd then Jet Li and the woman just go at it again while standing on the people.
So there you have it, a few of my favorite fight scenes. All of these movies are pretty great, and I highly suggest checking them out. But if you only check out one then at least check out Hard Boiled if you haven't seen it.
Disappointing sequels #1: Infernal Affairs 3
Ah, sequels! Some times they are great sometimes they are total disappointment. However, Terminator 2: Judgment Day proved that it is possible to make a sequel superior the original in every way possible. So I decided to make a blog about sequels that just disappoint.
In the year 2002 a film hit Chinese theaters by the name of Infernal Affairs. The movie became a huge hit and was the start of the trilogy. The trilogy would go on to win 27 international film awards and also inspired the movie The Departed.
The first two movies were great, and the second is easily the best. But the third one was disappointing.
Infernal Affairs 3 picks up after the second one, Lau is still working undercover at the police station and he is reinstated as a senior inspector. However, he thinks every thing is going great. The people that were in his way are now gone, however it turns out that another cop thinks Lau is crooked and is set on exposing Lau.
What made the series so great is the writing, acting, and the tension that slowly rose through the movie. The third one still has all this, but where it faulters is the pacing of the story. The first time I watched it I was flat out confused when I hit the ending, but once I realized that certain parts were flashbacks, I started to under stand the story a little bit more but it still left me confuse. Another problem was some of the scenes were a little out of place. Some of the them just felt pointless, however theyflesh out the backstory, but since the characters in those are no longer around so they could have just been removed.
The movie takes place from the perspective of Lau, and it as the movie passes on you start to understand his paranoia. But when you hit the ending you get knocked back from the huge twist and it definitely clears up a little more, and the ending is satisfying as every thing is tied up and leaves nothing hanging.
It is not a bad movie, but once you see the first two, it doesn't even hold a candle to the other movies. However, if you have not seen this series, I highly suggest checking it out. It is a great trilogy that is definitely worth watching.
Alien Trilogy and Alien Resurrection
So after I wrote my previous blog, it dawned on me that the cover art looked familiar like I had seen it some where. Then I realized that I had seen it else where. It's the same art used for Alien Trilogy (a far superior game) cover art. Here are both cover arts so you can compare them.
Alien Trilogy:
Alien Resurrection:
Don't they look like each other than the Acclaim logo on Alien Trilogy? What in the world were they thinking?
I have both, and Alien Trilogy is definitely the better game. One of coolest things about this game is how when you kill an alien their blood splatters on the ground. Well, they have acid blood so if you walk over it then you take damage, which makes sense. It's a cool game mechanic, and I don't get why Resurrection did not use it too.
Games to avoid: Alien Resurrection
I love the Alien movie series, and it was a great scifi horror flick. Now there have been some good games and not so good games made about the Alien series. However, one of the games that I really wanted to play was Alien Resurrection so last weekend when I saw a copy of it for dirt cheap I did not hesitate. Sadly, what a disappointment the game was.
The first thing I want to point out is with the case. On the back it says, "try to outwit Alien intelligence as they communicate with each other, sound and player tactics". Sounds pretty cool, but the game fails to prove this. And what do you mean player tactics? That makes no sense whatsoever.
But any way, the story follows the movie. 200 years have passed since Alien 3, scientist have attempted to clone Ripley, and they succeed after eight attempts. But, of course, the aliens escape.
The controls for this game are unique. The left analog stick is used for movement, while the right is used for aiming. It works fine once you get the hang of it, but it takes a while to get used to. But what is annoying is that when you let go of the right stick is snaps back to center, which means having to hold it dead still when trying to shoot enemies.
The graphics are terrible. All the walls seem to be brown and black, which wouldn't be a problem if it wasn't so easy to get turned around. There are parts where you have to back track, but trying to figure where to go is very confusing and even worse is that if you do a 360 then trying to figure out where you came from is next to impossible because every thing just blends together.
Now the meat and bones of this game is trying to make to the end of each level while fighting aliens and marines. Sounds pretty easy, right? Well, no it is not. The lighting in this game is horrible. It is way to dark. Luckily, you get a flashlight, however it is completely useless because it drains way to fast, however it recharges are fast as it drains. But let's be honest, do you want to have use the flash then stop and let it recharge when it empties? No? Okay, how about doing this about every thirty seconds? No? Well, that is what you have to do in this game. It only takes about twenty to thirty seconds for the flashlight to drain.
The enemies in this game really seem to have no AI. The aliens will just run straight at you, while the marines run away and group together. However, one of the cool things about the aliens is that they run along walls and crawl on ceiling, which looks cool. Unfortunately, the aliens are brown and black so they blend right into the graphics of the wall so you can expect to get blindsided a lot by the aliens. However, it is not so bad when you play as Call because she has a detector, which you can use to spot the aliens.
The gameplay also consists of climbing ladders. There are two things I can not stand doing in FPS, the first is jumping/platforming and the second is climbing ladders. The main reason is because climbing is such a pain, and it is terrible in this game. Apparently, walking up to a ladder and hitting down would be to easy so you have to climb a little on the ladder then you can climb down. I just want to climb down, and it is ridiculous that I have to climb up before I can go down.
Oh, but it gets worse. The level design in this game is grade A crap. For example, you will come to a split with a left and a right path. I'll call them A (left) and B (right). So you go down A to get to another split, which are C and D. Well, path C is locked so you go to D to hit a swith so you go back to C, but it is still locked so you go back to A then go down B, which leads to another split, which are E and F. So you go to F and it is blocked so you go to E to hit a switch then go back to F to hit a switch to go to E to hit another switch then you have to go back path C to continue on forward. Does that not sound confusing? Well, it is just as bad as it sounds. Getting lost is way to easy, getting turned around is way to easy, and dying is way to easy.
Now there are a few cool things about this game. At the beginning of the game, your health is low so you hear a heart beating, and the controller vibrates in rythm with the sound.
So basically what you have here is another movie based game that fails miserable. Now it is playable, but it is not enjoyable thanks to terrible lighting, horrible level design, and awkward controls. I give it a 2.5 out of 5.
