My Introduction Into Next-Gen Handheld Gaming
Yesterday I went out and bought a Nintendo DS Lite, at a reasonable cost. Now, at first I thought I was a little old for the DS, thinking most games would be directed towards the younger generation. But, I was wrong. Games like GTA Chinatown Wars, and Zelda: Phantom Hourglass caught my eye.
Will update you on my results with later DS reviews ![]()
Achievements: A Lazy Developper's Dream?
with the success of Xbox 360's launch and its new achievement system, it seems to me that developpers are getting sloppy, because I mean, why focus on the story or the gameplay and length of the game, when you can just put 30 objects around the campaign and give the gamer 30pts for finding them all?
How many times did you play through any of the GTA series, or the Zelda franchise, or the Mario games, did you replay them just for different "Achievements?" NO you played them through a second/third time because they were enjoyable games to play with a great story line.
While I agree, its hard to try to compare games, but some of these new hits for instance:
Fable 2: giving 3 different achievements for picking the final outcome in the story, yet the game was less than 10 hours long the first time through.
Mass Effect: another big hit by BioWare (who brought you KOTOR) on Normal difficulty playing through the main story... 7hrs? are you kidding me?
Assasin's Creed: the game was new, looked promising, different, and at first.. it was, but the main story was completed over a weekend. sure I could go around and collect all the stuff, but that doesn't give it *replayability*
I mean, ok, these games were great and I'm not giving them enough credit, but giving side missions and object collecting doesnt give depth, there's no reason to go out and do all the side missions in Mass Effect, no reason to go to each planet, because the outcome of the main story is the same.
I mean I understand certain achievements, like getting an achievement for beating a level in Call of Duty 4 on Veteran, and getting an achievement, because hey, its an accomplishment, and its a token that says "I'm pro"
So game developpers, take some lessons from Rockstar, Valve, Nintendo, etc. kthx
