Superman Returns Movie Review
Movie review by Lightening411
I recently saw Superman Returns after I had been anticipating it greatly. Superman is my favorite super hero and was so in my childhood. I am critical as to how Superman is produced and used because it's important that writers and actors portray Superman just like we knew him from our youths. Let's see if the movie lived up to my expectations.
Basically the story is about scientists finding some remains of Krypton and Superman spends five years in space investigating it. Superman ends up finding nothing though and returns to earth. When Superman gets back, he comes to realize that Lois Lane(Kate Botsworth) actually is with someone and apparently has a child and blames Superman for leaving her while at the same time Superman is upset she found someone else. Lex Luther(Kevin Spacey) devices a plot to destroy billions including Superman and causing the world to yield themselves to him. I won't reveal too much of the plot but I will say that the main source of Lex Luther's plan are crystals.
Superman was portrayed quite well but there will NEVER EVER be another person who portrayed Superman better than Christopher Reeves. Brandon Routh(Superman) was not as convincing, nor did he have the charisma that Reeves had but he was "cooler" and at least physically was the description of Superman.
Lois Lane's character was portrayed very well, her anger towards Superman and her concern for her young son was realistic in itself.
Kevin Spacey was MAGNIFICENT. His sublte facial expressions combined with his "silent" evil proved to be quite effective and you could really feel his hatred through the movie screen. When he spoke, he commanded your attention and concern that he was about to destroy billions of people!
The special effects were awesome! They really captured and simulated Superman's flying ability really well and I think they used computer generated scenes for some of the movie that looked maginificent. They portrayed Superman's cape while it floated in space brilliantly.
My only big fault that I had with Superman was that he did not "physically" fight any enemies. I mean that there were not Braniac, Doomsday, Lobo, or any other super villains that you could see trade blows with Superman. Superman is so powerful, why not have him go toe to toe with an enemy with supernatural or superhuman powers? I grew up seeing Superman fight so many cool villains that I missed that from the movie. I hope that in the future Superman movies, this issue is addressed.
The music was very good and true to the character and spirit of Superman. In the beginning, some of the middle and the end, the theme from the Christopher Reeves Superman movies can be heard. Basically the music is orchestral that is heard through the movie.
It was a good movie and I enjoyed it although it was not on par with the Spiderman movies that have come out in the past few years. It was a well written story and I look foward to seeing the future installments of Superman.
I give this movie an 8.7/10
