A nostalgic look at my original favourite games company, Sega.
Long before I was a fan of Sony I used to play games on the Sega mega drive, now back then I wouldn’t really call my-self a gamer partly because I had no knowledge of the games industry. I used to love playing on my mega drive because I had some awesome games which were fun and addictive. In the 90’s you were either a Nintendo fan or a Sega fan and for me, it was Sega all the way. I didn’t dislike Nintendo its just that the first console my parents bought me was a Sega mega drive, the more I played the more I enjoyed it. Apart from Sega I had no idea what the other consoles were like in fact I didn’t have a clue, all I knew was that Sega is the BEST.
I actually got a mega drive at the time of when PlayStation came out but I wasn’t aware of it back then, that doesn’t mean that if I was aware of PS1 I would have left Sega. I really enjoyed each moment of playing on my Mega drive, the games I had were ‘The revenge of Shinobi’ which was a fantastic game and the first game I had ever complete, it was really hard but fun. The other games I had were Street Fighter 2, Mortal Kombat 2, Golden Axe 1&2, Streets Of Rage 1&2, Sonic the Hedgehog, altered beast and micro machines. They were my perfect collection of games which I still have
.
Through the Sega mega drive I began to get a better understanding of the games industry but it wasn’t until 2001 when I officially became a gamer. Unfortunately I found out that Sega had gone out of business
and that the DreamCast was their last console. It was ironic that when I properly got into gaming my favourite games company had gone. I decided to buy another console instead which was… you guessed it, the PS2.
I’m glad that Sega is not totally gone and that they still makes games because they were the first company which I truly liked and I’m the type of person that sticks to one games company all the way.
I’m really happy with Sony and I plan to stick with them like how stuck with Sega. The only thing that saddens me is that I couldn’t fully support Sega back in the early days because I was too young to notice.
I will say one thing though if Sega miraculously brought out another console I would be pretty confused on who to support, I have been a Sony fan for so long and all my favourite games are on the PlayStation platform, but I highly doubt that would happen. When ever I miss the early days I always go back and switch on my Sega Mega drive to remember how good I had it back then.
Sega will always be numero uno to me.
Nintendo the wild card
In the business that is the games industry Microsoft and Sony are like two rival posh kids who like nothing but to better each other, they prefer to be neat and tidy and try their best to improve on there skills. Nintendo on the other hand is a whole different story, Nintendo is the wild rebellious kid who likes to do stuff which is extreme and totally risky thus having a much better time in the process.
If you didn’t understand what I mean I’ll repeat myself. The games industry is now a very huge business, unlike 20 years ago the games industry is one of the most economically important business’s in the world. It is now even rivalling movies, music and TV. Games industry has struggled to get in to hearts and minds of people all over the world, which was once cliché is now mainstream - but how mainstream can the games industry get without becoming boring - Sony have done a fantastic job leading the games industry into a great direction but can they really maintain that lead without becoming stale. Nintendo (god bless-um) has took on a dangerous challenge to take the games industry to a whole new level, they are going to do something so risky so dangerous that it could possibly decide the fate of Nintendo. Despite what all you guys might say about Nintendo not being next generation I’m glad Nintendo cares enough about its gamers to do something completely new. Yes Satoru Iwata did say that Nintendo is not going for next gen, but since when does that mean ‘Wii’ is going to be crap. What this actually means is that there not doing something that now has become mainstream in the games industry - old games with shiny new coat of paint - Sony and Microsoft are just doing things which is a shinier version of what they did last time, especially Microsoft because 360 is more like an xbox 1.5.
At least Sony is trying out something new with there ‘six degree’s of freedom controller‘ then all you guys give them crap because you miss the rumble feature - sorry people get over it, try something new for once - who knows it might even prove popular then the rumble.
Now back to Nintendo, Wii is a whole new concept of gaming albeit a fantastic one at that. If Nintendo wii fails because you guys thought it was a gimmick then shame on you.. I’ve heard many people talk about how they would like originality but it seems when they get originality they don’t want it because they prefer to stick to the same old routine.
I for one will support the wii all the way, we need a wild card in the games industry because without one there wont be choice and new experience. If you guy’s don’t support Nintendo then you basically don’t care about originality and the games industry for that matter, trying out something new isn’t always bad in fact at E3 Nintendo owned Microsoft and Sony. People had their doubts about the wii and some even claimed it as a gimmick, but after E3 all doubts were thrown out side the window.
Now if any one says that Nintendo glory days are long gone they should get slapped because I say they have yet to come.
GO Wiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii
Why microsoft will never lead the games industry.
Yeah, xbox, great console wasn’t it, suuuuure what ever you say buddy. The moment the original xbox was released Microsoft knew very well that there was no way in hell they were going to beat Sony this generation, J Allard himself said “we knew at the beginning of this generation that we weren’t going to win the championship” (Edge mag 2004 - issue 13
. So why did they bother losing so much money with the xbox, easy, they wanted to see how many people will buy in to there false sense of gaming so they can dump them 3-4 years later (which is pathetic for a console’s life-span).
Xbox basically bombed in Japan and will probably be put as the worst console to be ever released in Japan, at least until the 360 came out. Yes I know the Japanese market is at a decline but if Microsoft just abandons Japan and concentrate’s on America and Europe they will most definitely fail. Why you say, simple, Japan has some of the most talented games developers out there, Hideo Kojima, Yu Suzuki, Shinji Mikami, etc. Japan is home to some of the Best known games franchise’s. Team Ninja is a treasured gem to Microsoft so if they abandon Japan, Team ninja will surely abandon them, which will be a huge blow considering how much xbox owners love Team ninja games. On the other hand Japan seems to dislike the xbox a whole lot, no its not nationalism as some of you fan-boy’s might claim, the fact is that the Japanese audience have different taste compared to America, and to them the xbox is heavily westernised. PS2 was very much an all culture console, it appealed to America and also Europe thus leading to its huge success. Microsoft just don’t seem to get that and they never will.
I know the PS3 is expensive and some of you might be put off by that and the fact that Sony had a slightly disappointing E3 doesn’t help either. All I’m going to say is have faith, you guys/gals have just witnessed the first steps of Sony’s next gen wonder, and its only going to get better from here on.
Trust me I’m no fan-boy I shall also be purchasing the Wii but I tend to lean slightly towards Sony because I know they make sure their fans get the most out of their console unlike Microsoft who will no doubt abandon the 360 like they abandoned the xbox. I’m at least 90% sure that Microsoft knows their not going to win the next generation of gaming, so basically there sending all 360 owners on another wild goose chase yet again. Sony will give you long term commitment while Microsoft will just give you a short time burst.
Invest on a PS3, I guarantee you will at least experience six years of gaming heaven if not more.
