Final Mission Start!

The end of 2009. The end of the first decade of the new millennium.

I entered the decade as a moderately-popular 10-year-old with much optimism and the belief that Super Smash Bros. was the best videogame ever. I exit the decade as a 20-year-old, grumpy, jaded guy who's tired of just about every videogame franchise played thus far. 2009 itself was a year of mediocrity...much like 2008...and 2007...and so on.

A final check of my list created Dec. 31 of last year:

-I will pass Calculus or blah blah blah. OK!
-My knowledge of the Japanese language will extend beyond Katakana. X
-I will watch and complete an anime that is Gundam. OK!
-I will finish Full Metal Panic. OK!
-I will watch and complete an anime that hasn't been featured in Super Robot Wars. OK!
-I will read at least one manga from start to finish. OK!
-I will finish the Robotech novel based on Mospeada...and never touch Robotech again. X
-I will bash SEED 5% less than before. OK!
-I will play a console game to completion. X
-I will actually beat SD Gundam G Generation Portable. X
-I will reply to EVERY person who posts in one of my entries. X
-I will devote exactly five (5) hours to playing one of those JRPGs that everyone goes crazy about. OK!
-I will learn how to spell "separately" correctly. X
-I will refrain from bashing Original Generation, despite my ever-growing hate for it. OK?
-I will devise a plan for living the rest of my life as a single loser. It will involve Chex-Mix, a very large box of tissues, and old episodes of Earthworm Jim. Still working on it...

Well, that's about all I have for this obligatorily obligatory New Year's blog. I can't promise that you'll see much of me in 2010, considering I've already gone from serious lurker to super ninja-like lurker this last year, but I will be here. Always. Watching your every move, waiting for the right moment to strike...okay, maybe not, but in the 0.0001% chance that anyone wants to talk, I'll still be around.

Goodbye, 2009.

I got a Wii! Time for some Gamecube! So many games!

Got myself a Wii today with basically nothing other than a point card. I borrowed Smash Bros from a relative but other than that my only other game for Wii is Majora's Mask which I bought.

So I was browsing through my games and found some stuff I nostalgiaed on pretty bad.

Luigi's Mansion- I didn't imagine this game could actually be so good but it really really was.

Super Mario Sunshine- My Favorite Mario game. I might beat this one all over again. 109 shines is the highest I got.

OoC, WW, TP(Zelda for those who are crazy)- I may very well beat all of these again.

Tales of Symphonia- This was one of the first RPG's I remember getting into since I never got far is Final Fantasy 7,8,or 9.

I would also play through Soul Caliber II but I don't see the point since I was somewhere around Lvl 87 and there is a lack of story mode.(or at least a deep one)

Paper Mario- I bought this game when it became player's choice because of all the hype and I never got very far. Probably give it a second chance.

Anyway RECOMMEND SOME WII GAMEZSZSZSZSZ!!!

I already have my sights on

Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn

Mario Kart Wii

Tales of Symphonia II

On a Side note. I Bought Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon for DS and sadly....a World of Warcraft Time card. I know you don't have to tell me. I was in the middle of playing Fire Emblem for the GBA(with Lyn & Roy's father(Eliwood)) but after a data erase problem I haven't really got back to it since I returned to the chapter I was at on a second play through.

I also beat Biker Mice from mars and got near to the end of Joe and Mac. I also got Marvel Ultimate alliance and I'm waiting for a buddy to come over so we can clear right through it, Spidey FTW. I also got to the third world in Kirby's Nightmare in Dream land. If anyone remember how to beat the cloud with spikes plz tell me, too lazy to look it up I guess. And lastly, I think, I got a tiny bit through Final Fantasy 5 which I may also play simply because it has a job ****system which I really like.

A more prolonged blog :P

Hey peeps!

So, long time no see, huh? There are a few of you whom know my daily musings from Facebook, but for those not in the know, heres a concise update.

The main piece of news is.... I'm engaged! To a lovely lady called Keri, 27, has a little boy by the name of Iestyn, who is 5 years old. I'm a very happy man. As well as Keribeing my partner, she is abrilliant mate, who makes me laugh.

I'm working in a good job, pub work still, but out of the city, and more on the outskirts, very relaxed atmosphere, easy enough work, and fun when its busy.

Still doing shows! Since the start of the year I've starred in 2 ( HMS Pinafore and Patience), and been part of the cast in one ( Company), thoroughly enjoying it still, rehearsing for a new one to go on stage in April, Pirates of Penzance, I've auditioned for Frederic, which I got thankfully, huage role, one I'm really looking forward to sinking my teeth into .

Finally games... not much to be said on that front really. Managed to pick up Resident Evil Remake for the Wii, which I was surprised to see in the shops, but been a blast playing it again. Also Lego Star Wars, which is more for Iestyn, but Keri and I have been having fun playing it too. Hoping for an XBox 360 again soon, though may be a while yet... fingers crossed.

Thats as concise as it gets!

May Kennedy Rest in peace.

So yeah, for those of you who have been living under a rock, today is Ted Kennedy's funeral. It's onTV right now on channel five. On an ironic note, while I was watching it earlier, at the same time I was fighting Dracula and Death in Castlevania Portrait of ruin, which Igot the daybeforeyesterday. I also recently got Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor. It's an awesome yet brutal game. Next time:My trouble at Otaku's Dream.

Tons of games and no time

Oh the horror. Before my vacation I was having fun playing Prototype and couldn't wait till I went overseas and got games from there. Now that I'm back I have like 10 games to play and ironically I just started practicing my old hobby, tag making. I played a bit of all of the games I played (Dead Space, Far Cry 2, Crysis, HAWX, Fallaout 3, Lost Planet, Mirrors Edge and half-life). Now I have finished Mirror's Edge which was the game I enjoyed the most out of them all and then I completed Prototype today.

Now it's just a matter of finishing the games, to make matters worse tomorrow I'll be getting the copy of World in Conflict I asked for, by then I would have finished it and some other game than it's Batman:AA and then I'll have AC2 and MW2. Also being addicted to MW's multiplayer doesn't help me.

Any of you had these problems?

Nintendo ..... what??

What a sad day in the E3. A lot of blabla and they can receive the hit from Microsoft.

There is not too much to say first Super Mario Bros VII something like that, please Nintendo UPDATE your games.

The Wii Motion Plus ........ I heard it before am I wrong??, if we compare this with Project Natal there is nothing much to say you need to hire more Engineers to improve that control, yes there are new possibilities but against Natal you need to do a better effort

Enix - Square, with another FF for Nintendo. Kingdom hearts again and again bring a new kind of game Nintendo. I know that games are interesting but we want to see anything new and the next RPG is new Mario and Luigi hehe for the DS and others that, like Golden Sun that is promising. The other games of DS is simple there is no need to comment about them but I liked this comment for the live blog "Players can also shop in each other's boutiques. An ironic "Whoo!" from one audience member draws a few laughs." and after all this "crap" more games for the DS and more crap.

I liked one thing from the conference:

The Mario game that they showed was very interesting but interesting isn't enough. Resident Evil, looks great, only a small teaser but we need more, after all this Dead Space saved some of this conference so I gave this game the prize.

Metroid other M, was cool and I gave that game the prize.

But at the end this was a crap, so all the conference received the prize.

The Gaze

Hi guys, I know that it's been a while since I've logged in. A lost of $h!t has happened in my life.

First, I would like to mention that I got accepted into a foreign exchange program and i will be going to Japan at the end of May. I'm so freaken excited, and this month is just dragging on.

Next, I just got done with my 4th semester in college (I still need to take 2 finals, but I'm done for the most part). And I have a habbit of posting some of my term papers because I want people to read what I write. Please read my paper and let me know what you think.

The Gaze

One of my favorite animated movies is Perfect Blue by Satoshi Kon, and it wasn't until I took this cl@ss that I realized that there was more to that movie than what I had noticed before. From the moment it was mentioned in the cl@ss the gaze was something that caught my attention from the moment it was mentioned in the cl@ss. I never knew that we (the audience) could be able to see the same film with so many different points of view, sometimes switching back and forth seamlessly unable to see the subtle differences. This was something that was talked about extensively by Susan Napier and Laura Mulvey in the articles that were assigned to us.
The purpose of this paper is to try to understand a few of the concepts and ideas that are discussed in the articles of both authors. I will try to focus on different types of gazes used in the film Perfect Blue. I will only use the film Perfect Blue as an example since it's the only work by Satoshi Kon that I'm the most familiar with.

First off, the gaze comes from feminist film theory where a woman is objectified by the camera and become a mere object to be looked at by the audience. Most of the time this is called the "Male Gaze" since it usually involves scenes where the camera focus on the body of the female. Mulvey points out the Male Gaze is always active, because it's men that are always in power while the women are passive. Mulvey points out that to a certain point, women don't even matter in most films. All that matter is how the female makes the protagonist act. An example that she gives in her article is that is the female is in danger, she will make the protagonist act out of desperation and save her in the climatic point of the movie. (23) But Satoshi Kon treats her female characters a little different, and that's what makes Perfect Blue a great film to analyze with relation to the gaze.

Second, while the male gaze is always present in a film, there are many different types of gaze that can show up in a single film. This is where I would like to introduce the film Perfect Blue. Napier talks about this in her article, and she points out that from the very beginning we are first shown us a camera that is recording a show of some Power Ranger-like character. Then we are shown the many fan boys that are talking about her in a very possessive way. Then it jump to show us the backstage view of all three girls getting ready for their last performance together. (28-29) I think that it's interesting how we are shown these many types of gazes from the very beginning. Like Napier says, this sets up the whole movie in a way to let us know that not everything that we see is necessarily real.

A scene comes to mind when mentioning "that not everything is real," is probably the most graphic scene in the whole movie: the rape scene. Before this scene is even shown to us, the people in the film as arguing on whether Mima should do the scene. Mima decides to act out the scene, even if we later find out that she only did it so that she wouldn't be a bother to anyone, but she never wanted to do it. (31) In that scene, she plays the part of a striper and while on her first night on the job, she gets attacked and raped by one of the customers of the bar. The audience can obviously tell that this isn't part of "reality" because you can hear all the different voices of the people on the set that are getting ready to take the shot. And it's in this precise scene we are shown many different gazes.

First we have the cameras, which are only there to record the actors and their surroundings. But the cameras view can be extended beyond that; to a certain point, the camera will represent how people will perceive Mima. This can also serve as a way for Mima to become objectified beyond what she is normally used to. Before the actual rape scene begins, she is show dancing and looking all pretty. This is where the audience only see her as an object that lures them, but yet they can never truly posses her since she is merely an image being broadcasted. At the same time, the camera serve as a way for the director of the show to manipulate the audience, this is due to the fact that he can decide what they will and will not see.

The next gaze that I would like to point out is that of Rumi, her manager. Since the beginning of the film, she didn't like the idea of Mima leaving behind her life as a pop idol. She was also against Mima taking part in the rape scene, and tried hard to convince Mima not to do it. The rape scene is the turning point in the film, because this is where we can see Rumi crying because all she can do is watch by as Mima is "raped". Like Napier mentioned in her article, Rumi's gaze is probably the most important in the whole movie.
Napier says that Rumi's actions are an attempt to protect Mima, but that she isn't really trying to protect the real Mima, which has abandoned her old life as a pop idol. Rumi wants to protect the Mima that she identifies with, the old Mima that exists in her imagination. But at the same time, she wants to become Mima and be the center of attention that Rumi was originally trying to protect Mima from. (33 – 34)

Last, it's worth noting that many people have asked Satoshi Kon why he didn't just do this film in live action. But he defends his work by saying that Perfect Blue is more interesting because it's an animation. (24) Also, at the beginning of the article he was also asked why he focused so much on his female characters. He responded by saying: "I can project my obsession onto the character and expand the aspects I want to describe." (23) Even if Satoshi Kon is showing us how the same person can be viewed in many different ways, I belief that this film can also be seen as his own attempt to make us see the world through his eyes (since Perfect Blue has been described as a critique on Japanese pop culture and consumerism).
While I'm perfectly aware that every director will always include their own personal bias in any movie they are in charge of, I belief that this is trying to tells that we need to be careful in what we consume (ex: celebrities, pop culture, etc.). There's nothing wrong with being a fan of a particular thing, but it's when we take it beyond just being a normal fan. We have to be careful that we don't fall prey to the exact same thing that we are always chasing after. If we let anything take too much out of personal lives, it moves from being a mere hobby or pastime and evolves into something a sick and twisted obsession like the one displayed by Mimania.

Just started playing Valkyria Chronicles and I gotta say, I'm Impressed.

The title basically describes my whole blog .

I've been meaning to buy that game a long time ago, just never got to around it, and I've still got a a handful that I need finish. I just inserted the game into my PS3, and it's obvious that the developers has put time out to put care and love into their work. I've just started the second mission, and believe me, that doesn't take much more then 10-15 mins (there's a handful of videos to watch in between). It's already obvious that each of the two main character is more then just two dimensional, they're humans.

I know I've already said this before but I just believe how much charm there is in this game, everything, from the game mechanics to the graphics, characters to the settings. It's just beautiful, and I'm only 15 minutes into the game. I think this will be a good two week Easter holiday for me .

Back from the Entrails of Asia

Something ive noticed is that when people "come back" they expect everyone to remember them and talk to them, when they realize that other users are gone or not interested in them is when they trully leave the site...so im coming back expecting all of you to be either dead, lost in the woods or homophobic (not gay...it was just random)

Where have i been the past 10 months? well gosh i gave you a heads up!! i was...

In the US for some time (i live in mexico yup) then i went to Guam then on to Thailand for some time, stoped in Vietnam for a couple weeks and toped it of with China...then flew home

Gamespot Community

Wow, I obviously didn't know how fun the gamespot community can be. I've have been member for about 6 years now, and didn't really know about the amount of stuff that can be done here.

So, for the last few days I've been trying to share something with this large community. I rated some games, posted some reviews, joined some unions, made some forum posts, tagged some tags, and made a blog. And it was all fun, this rivals even the dedicated social networking websites.

I just wanted to thank everybody who is responsible for this great site, and all of you who share and contribute to make it even better, so, THANK YOU.
