PlayStation Portable?

So I've been thinking about the kind of games I want to be playing on the PSP. With the hardware locked and loaded for a March launch, we're starting to see more and more of the software that's being developed for it. So far there's a fair mix of new content along with the expected ports. It's funny because I'm pretty torn about the subject of ports on the PSP. While I'm usually not a fan of dirty porting, we see that enough on consoles, I have to say that I wouldn't mind seeing some old favorites get a portable makeover.

Vampire Chronicle was one of my most anticipated titles for the system when it shipped in Japan, despite the fact that it was basically just a ten year old fighting game with a new mode and WiFi built in. The extras weren't a bad addition and the fact that there hasn't been a version of Darkstalkers out in an age made the game practically new anyway. Looking at what's coming I think you can say that "everything old is new again" in a number of cases, like Wipeout Pure and Ape Escape for example, but that doesn't necessarily mean I want to see developers scampering back to their PlayStation catalogs and dusting off anything that came out for it.

What I'd like to see happen is developers take an approach that's in the same spirit as what Capcom did for Vampire Chronicle. If you pick the right old stuff I won't hate, especially if it gets tricked out to take advantage of the PSP's Wifi, massive screen, and good amount of buttons. The geek in me wants to see the PSP software library turn into a showcase for great new original titles as well as a spotlight for enhanced director's cut style versions of PlayStation games that didn’t quite get their due or are hard to find. My wishlist of PlayStation games I'd like to see enhanced on the PSP is, and this is by no means comprehensive since this is me just thinking out loud:

Klonoa
Einhander
Xenogears
Soul Blade
Silhouette Mirage
Monster Rancher

On top of all that I'd like to see Sega do its fans a solid release Shining Force III for the system. And I'm not just talking about the lone chapter that hit the Saturn at the tail end of that console's life, I want them all. For those that don't remember, the Shining Force III debacle was one of Sega's biggest FUBAR moments and the final smack to long suffering Saturn owners. Basically the Shining Force III that was released in the states was the first of three scenarios, the other two came out in Japan as they were meant to and finished off the well thought out story. While the 20 or so of us that imported the rest of the chapters were satisfied by how the story played out, anyone who just played the US game was left wondering how the heck things turned out. Given that most players have never played the other two chapters, or even the first one actually since the game was released at the end of the Saturn's life when most folks had moved on, Shining Force III would be a great candidate for a PSP game. A visual makeover plus the inclusion of the other two scenarios, hell Sega could even through in the super rare Premium Disc content which you could only get by sending in proofs of purchase of all three scenarios too if they wanted, would ensure the game would come packing some serious value and gameplay. Who knows if anyone's going to listen to these mad ramblings but it sure would be cool if at least some of them happened, right?

Well, I personally wouldn't mind seeing very specialized kinds of PSP ports. I don't, like most people, want to play Grand Theft Auto, Devil May Cry, Grand Turismo, ect. on the portable, however, I wouldn't mind seeing games like MediEvil and Wipeout.

Can you guess why? They aren't well known (anymore). I think that the big PS2 franchises should stay on consoles, but games that never saw their day in the sun on PS should go very well outside that norm.

They could leave the PS console forever and become PSP franchises, thus adding a sense of originality.

Eventually, the ports will give way to new games in the series, and PSP will be all the richer. Whereas ports of DMC, GTA, MGS, ect. would only flood the market with uber-popular rehashes.

This one really coincides with kasavins post about the new franchises' diffuculty nowadays. Just bringing in port after port of PS and PS2 games will not only make the value of a PSP go down but also reinforces how loved series are all that we see anymore. The gameboy, partially due to its inferior technology compared to the home systems, instead of doing the same games on the home consoles, brand new games were created that fit the gb style, like tetris and pokemon. The new hackers game seems like a game that would be in the same boat. It would be a big mistake to bring over port after port in my eyes, it not only lessens the PSP's worth but reinforces.... Im repeating myself now.

I have to agree with you Ricardo, there has been allot of games that were released at very bad times, these were good games that perhaps didnt get the attention they deserved. By releasing such games on the PSP it will give people who perhaps didnt get the chance to play it the first time the opportunity to enjoy some great classics.

This is espessialy relevant to PAL gamers as this would give developers the chance to release games that only got NTSC releases *cough-Final Fantasy Tactics/Xenogears/chrono cross-cough*

I think a port of Xenogears would be great, since I never got to play it. Since I never owned a PSone, and I only did a limited amount of retrogaming when I got my PS2, there's a lot that I would still like to play. Castlevania: SOTN is another one.

I am afraid, to some extent: The GBA was one of our last sources for really compelling 2d games: the castlevanias, advance wars, FFT:A. Now that the hardware can support good 3d, I hope that 2d doesn't fall by the wayside. This could be another wave of having our favorite franchises ruined with bad 3d translations.

I agree. I don’t want to see 2D die either. However, as for over-flooding the PSP library with older games being a bad thing…what’s the definition of over-flooding? If ONLY re-hashes were released, well of course this would be bad. But having a substantial library of BOTH kinds of games only makes sense for at least two reasons. 1. (As was mentioned) There are many older folks who would love the chance to revisit some of their favorite games from years ago (or explore new games based on the same characters/style, etc.) and…2. There are a whole bunch of younger kids who not only haven’t ever played these games, but never even knew they existed in the first place. Bringing in some of the older (or revamped versions of older) games seems to have worked well for the Game Boys (look at the Mario games, the Zelda games and even the Minish Cap – which as far as I’m concerned is its sequel – and man, how I wish it would have come out on the SNES a decade ago!! I don’t own a GBA, you see.). Therefore, I don’t see why it wouldn’t work well with the PSP too. Seems like a no-brainer. The only thing is…will the games they release be the same as what YOU would release if in charge? But, I guess that was Ricardo’s point all along…

Monster Rancher on Wifi?...That just blew my mind man!

You bring up an excellent point in this article, why not take older games that people loved as multiplayer (or would of loved) and put them into a Wifi format? Monster rancher is one great idea, and so are any solid FPS's, but what about strategy games? Personally I would love to see (though it would probably never happen/couldn't happen) is the original Starcraft or a newer version of it on the PSP in an internet type format. But I guess that is wishful thinking =)

Yes I agree. There is definitely a lot of potential for older content to be on the PSP. Nintendo did an excellent job with the GBA and their older titles like super mario world and such. Sony does have the title support from the psx that would really nicely compliment the PSP. For myself personally, Fighting games would be great on it as well. PSP can kind of be like what the GBA was to Nintendo, a portable platform on which it could bring back it's classics with newer features (WiFi) and such. It would be great to see.
