Mahalia Jackson was, still is, and will always be the greatest singer in the category of Gospel. Yes, there are other great Gospel singers, but Mahalia Jackson lived most of the songs that she recorded. She had a way of personalizing the lyrics that she sang.
She delivered her songs in such an energetic and sincere manner. Many would call her delivery style as "foolishness," but those that call it "foolishness" don't know what they're talking about. God is a good God, and she didn't mind expressing. She was restricted in the recording studio, but every now and then she would "cut up." Her live recordings show the TRUE Mahalia Jackson.
Many people have also described Mahalia's songs as being depressing. The only reason they seem depressing is because songs such as "Troubles Of The World," "Precious Lord," "Amazing Grace," etc...are the only songs that are really played. And when you look to the record companies who re-release her material, they release the same songs over and over again, so that makes it seem like Mahalia those are the only songs that she did. Maybe one day SONY/LEGACY will understand and release more of Mahalia's music.
Mahalia Jackson made a great contribution to not only Gospel, but other fields also. Several people have acknowledged Mahalia Jackson as their mentor and influence; Aretha Franklin, Santana, Mavis Staples, Elvis Presley, Albertina Walker, Dorothy Love Coates, Little Richard, Countess Vaughn, and so many others.
Mahalia Jackson will always live within the hearts of men, women, boys, and girls whether they know it or not.
I thank God everyday for sending this angel to this earth!

Alex Bradford certainly didn't receive all of the credit that he should have received while he was living. Many hail James Cleveland as the Greatest Male Gospel Artist, but I have to disagree. Alex Bradford was, indeed, a creative and very artistic artist. Not only could he write music (as James Cleveland could), but Alex could also sing (something that James Cleveland wasn't too good at). In the description of Alex Bradford, it was stated that Alex was the "Little Richard of Gospel." They have this backwards. Little Richard is the "Alex Bradford of Rock'n'Roll."
