Sorry the chapter is so short :P
The end of that school day had me thinking about what Mr. Wesley had said. Could it be possible somehow that he knew about my powers? How was that even possible? Could it be he had been watching me? That he had come from some government organization?
I shook my head. It couldn't be. I had known Mr. Wesley before I had gotten my powers. Plus he was my teacher, so it was natural for him to be interested in what his students were doing for extra credit. I cursed myself for even thinking of something so ridiculous.
Before heading home, I decided to go to Neil's house. I was interested in seeing why he hadn't showed up for school. He hadn't told me anything the day before, but then again I hadn't really let him.
I remembered the last thing I had told him, and shuddered.
"I'm a freak Neil! A FREAK!"
Those were my own words and they scared me because it was completely true. I was a freak, and every day that went by I worried that my family would get hurt somehow because of it.
I walked up the steps to the porch and rang the doorbell. The sky was overcast, like it had been the day before, and I remembered what I had done to Chad.
The door finally opened after what seemed like an eternity, and Neil's sister answered the door. I looked up and jumped back when I saw her face covered in a green mud mask.
"Neil has the stomach bug." She said, "He can't play Nerd Wars with you."
I nearly blushed at this insult.
"What do you mean? He was fine yesterday."
"He's sick, now go!"
"Can I at least-"
"No!" She yelled, and promptly slammed the door in my face.

Back at home, I practiced controlling fire in my room. I had a bucket of water just in case I accidentally set something on fire, and an extinguisher. It was becoming easier to manipulate the flames I was making, and I even practiced juggling a ball of fire. But I was determined not to get too carried away.
I finally willed the fire in my hand away, after lighting several candles with my fingertip and them putting them out with a wave of my hand. I remembered that Mr. Wesley still had the papers Neil had printed out for me on spontaneous combustion. Not like they could help me at all.
____
I went online to look up the papers again, since Neil was apparently too sick to be a help, when a popup came up saying:
You have Neil.
I clicked it, chuckling at how Neil had set that program up a few months earlier. I still didn't know how he had done it.
Hey. The message said.
Why weren't you at school today?
Because I faked being sick.
Why?
It took nearly a minute before Neil answered back:
Because I'm afraid.
Afraid of what?
I don't know.
I slapped my forehead in frustration.
What do you mean you don't know?
I just need some time to think...
About what?
Everything, you know, the secret we've been keeping...I don't wanna get in trouble...
You won't get in trouble!
But what if we do?
After that Neil went offline, and I fell asleep.
I awoke to the sound of a fire truck passing the street.
