360 problems...already

Two weeks ago, my best friend and I drove to the local Air Force Base and purchased a premium Xbox360.  As you can gather from the previous post, it was a very good moment for us.
On the day after he bought it, he recieved the "red ring of light" on his 360, and the system notified him that it could not read the current disc.  This happened with all 3 games he's played: The Elder Scrolls IV, Perfect Dark Zero, and Gears of War.  The Elder Scrolls and PDZ were both brand new, and Gears was borrowed from a friend and in near mint condition.  (Gears of War works fine on said friend's 360.)
So, we took the 360 back to the BX that we purchased it from and exchanged it for a new one.

No more than a day later, the new 360 breaks also.  We can't play a single game for more than ten minutes without it giving us a disc-read error.

I've already checked around both on the Xbox360 forums and on the Xbox website, and so far I haven't found much useful advice besides "contact Microsoft and send in the console for repair", though I'm not sure how much that would cost.

If anyone has any suggestions for me, please let me know.  Honestly, I'm pretty annoyed right now.  There's no real excuse for the sheer volume of broken 360s that I've been hearing about both from friends and 360 owners around the net.
"Give us $400 and maybe your console will work!"  Not the best philosophy in my eyes.

Man, I can't see how so many people keep having broken down consoles. My only comment is if you bought that from the same store, it might be the have the Samsung Disc Drives which are notoriously crappy, or that the shipment itself might have been damaged. I really can't see why any 360s are breaking down now that they've supposedly got over the initial launch problems.

Still, I've had mine since early march and it's not given me one problem except for a glitch in the programming of Saints Row.

I got them both from the same store, so there's most likely a problem with that particular lot. I don't know the details about the Samsung drives, though that's a possibility.

The reason we bought it from the BX is so my friend wouldn't have to pay tax on the system or games, and when it added up, he did save a lot of money. So yeah, we could buy one from a larger retailer such as Wal-Mart or Circuit City, but my friend is probably just going to get his money back.

Hmm...

Yea, I got my 360 in New Hampshire with no Sales Tax, Hallelujah!
I bet the lot was faulty or something. But still, I hear the Samsung drives are crap from everyone, why, I don't know.

Well, he took it back and I'm pretty bummed about it. Oblivion, Gears, PDZ, all gone. He says he's going to save up for either a PS3 or a gaming PC, though that's going to be a while.

I mean, it'll be cool playing online with him if he gets a PS3, but it blows that the two 360s didn't work, especially with a demo of Halo 3 about to come out. (Not my favorite game, but come on, who doesn't want to play it?)

About Me

I'm 16 years old, and I've held a strong interest in games ever since I was very young. When I was about six, I got my first console (a Sega Genises) and was instantly hooked. It wasn't until a couple of years ago, when I discovered a website that allowed members to submit their own game ideas, that I became totally obsessed with the world of gaming. My dream is to someday become a game designer, whether my games sell big or not. In my free time I like to play my PS2 (I also have an Xbox) and if I'm feeling lucky I'll give my best shot at Devil May Cry 3. I also like to write whenever I can.
