Ridiculous

This is a conversation that should not even be taking place.

Am I the only one who sees that? Am I?

Read the thread.

There are just so many things on this site that need time and attention from the staff. Yet, instead, they are spending their time thinking about how to reinstate voluntarily retired editors.

Why?

Is this really necessary? How many editors will it ~actually~ affect? And is there really an editor who is SO busy that they can't check in once a week? I mean, what... is someone going to move to a mud hut in the middle of the desert where there's no internet? Really?

Even if it's necessary, it certainly isn't more important than fixing the bugs that have infested this site for years.

And that alone makes the conversation ridiculous. It should not be taking place.

More editors need to tell the staff this rather than weighing in with a yes or a no, and their ideas of how to make such a low-priority idea work.

Walk With Me Down Memory Lane

Last night I was tootling around on YouTube, watching videos for the J-pops that I don't get to listen to so much any more. Then I wandered into '80s territory, watching the videos for Pop! Goes My Heart from Music & Lyrics... just a model of '80s music, even though, technically, it's not. My question on this video is this: whose butt is whose? I love this video, really, I do. That 'motorcycle move' thing that they do is priceless.

That then led me to watching some ~real~ '80s stuff, like When In Rome's The Promise, and Modern English's Melt With You, as well as the always fantastic Just Can't Get Enough by Depeche Mode, back when Vince Clarke was with them. This video is the one that the Music & Lyrics one reminds me of. From there, I moved on to other Vince Clarke stuff, including the definitively fun Take A Chance On Me with Vince and Andy Bell in full ABBA drag.

But then it happened... I typed a band name into the search box, and I was completely surprised at the number of results. I clicked on this one and then just sat there, in shock and awe...

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!
Wooooooooooooooooooooodddddddddddddddddyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!!!

I don't think I was breathing. Really. The Bay City Rollers. I haven't seen them, heard of them, thought of them in ages. But there they were, just as I remembered them. And I ~do~ remember them.... every word, evidently, as I sat there singing along to Rock 'n Roll Love Letter, which I haven't heard in a good 30 years or so... let's see... 2008 - 1976 = yup, 32.

Wooooooooooooooooooooodddddddddddddddddyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!!!

Okay, originally, I was a Derek fan, but then switched my allegiance over to Woody, the bass player. Don't know why. Don't know why Eric's soulful baby blues didn't do anything for me, either.

And then, the song... oh, my. Wouldn't You Like It?... only available on an import disc from the UK that I saved my money to buy. The raw sexuality of it all... and I remember every word. And, of course, who could forget the one that started it all, SATURDAY Night.

I don't think I've started breathing yet. How can I? I remember buying 16 Magazine, and reading all the latest on them. The first concert I ever went to was when the BCR played at the CNE in Toronto, and I made my friend go with me... we screamed ourselves hoarse. I remember when Allan quit the group, and Ian took his place. Then Ian quit, and Pat replaced him, but by that time, their star was waning. And then someone broke into our house and stole all our records, including all my BCR albums, and when we got the insurance money, I didn't replace them.

Watching the videos again really takes me back. And, you know, they weren't so bad, really. The songs are catchy, Les was a good singer, and hey, everybody needs a little plaid in their lives!

Sushi Anyone?

Watching: The 6 p.m. News on CTV.

Sushi anyone? I've now reached the lofty heights of level 52, Guzzlefish, and the emblem looks to be a lovely piece of maguro sushi, one of my favs. Maguro is tuna, which I much prefer to salmon.

Halloween is upon us, but I doubt I'll be dressing up. I have to work, so I guess I could go as someone who hates their job.

I've been watching 24 recently, and I just finished watching season 1. Wow! Yup... the longest day of Jack Bauer's life. It was absolutely fantastic, right up to the 8 - 9 p.m. episode, when everyone suddenly turned stupid! That's the hour where Lou Diamond Phillips (Richie Valens) dies... because Jack gets stupid! Really, I couldn't believe that one. I mean, there's Jack with Victor Drazen as a hostage, and Victor's son with the nameless warden (Phillips) that Jack just met 5 minutes ago as a hostage, and they're both threatening to shoot their hostages. "Drop you weapon or I'll shoot!" Okay...

See, the thing is, Jack has the upper hand. He's got the hostage that matters. Who's this other guy? No one. He doesn't even officially exist! All right, he exists, but his job and his work place don't. Yet Jack puts down his gun. Then the son shoots Richie Valens. Good for him, I thought. Utterly predictable, I thought. Why didn't Jack see that one coming? I thought.

And then in the next hour, Jack grabs a waitress and holds her hostage. He threatens Drazen saying that he'll kill the waitress if Drazen doesn't drop his gun. And I sat there thinking, 'yeah, why would he believe you, Mr. Empty Threats?' Then Drazen did the one thing that actually made me cheer out loud. He shot the waitress. Good for him. Now there's a man who knows how to get the job done, even if he is channeling some weird Speedy Gonzales accent.

And Kim... don't get me started on Kim. I just had to wonder if Elisha Cuthbert had any complaints about playing such a stupid and self-centred character?

But otherwise, I really liked it, and I'll be moving on to Day 2 for Jack. I traded my brother-in-law my Heroes set for his first two seasons of 24. Not a keepsies trade, though. He's got season 3, 4, and 5 as well, but he got season 4 while he was in Australia, so unless I get an all-areas dvd player, I won't be able to watch it. I really should get one, as I need it anyway, since I have about 100 area 2 dvds from Japan.

So the whole thing with all that shooting in 24 made me wonder about my "moral ambiguity". See, I would never think that shooting someone is right, or a good thing to do, but then again... there are just some situations, where, if you're going to do your job right, you have to shoot people. And that whole hostage situation with Jack and Victor Drazen was one such situation. Jack wasn't doing his job right.

Some adults may be offended by the content.

First song: Shingo Mama no Oha Rock.

The title of the blog is from the warning that runs before The Sopranos. I love that warning, which is, in full: This program is not intended for children. It contains scenes of violence, extremely coarse language and nudity. Some adults may be offended by the content. Viewer discretion is strongly advised. I think the only warning that I've seen that's better is the one that runs before Nip/Tuck, and while I could look that one up, I just don't feel like it. I think the part that I like best is that they say that some adults may be offended... that just means it's going to be a good show, in my opinion!

So the Emmys were last night, and I was in one of the chat rooms for a bit (hi Kimba! ), but since my computer and my tv are in different rooms, it was a little difficult, so I signed out of the chat room and just watched the show. There seemed to be a bit near the beginning that got censored in the States, but not in Canada. My favourite part... Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy. I'll bet there's been lots of people who have wanted to do that (whether the winner was there or not), and the pure joy that Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert and Steve Carrell displayed was just priceless. And the look on James Gandolfini's face when James Spader won Best Actor/Drama... well, that was pretty priceless too.

Otherwise, there's not too much new around here. The new season is about to start, and some of the shows look interesting, although I have to say, the more I hear about Gossip Girl, the less likely I am to watch it. I don't think I'll be giving Private Practice a go, since I didn't like the 2-hour Grey's that spawned it, although with my track record of watching shows that get cancelled, maybe I should do the world a favour (as Midi and I sort of decided we'd do) and watch/love it, so it will die a quick and quiet death.

Corner Gas starts season 5 here in Canada next Monday, and started airing in the States last Monday (previous seasons). And the big news here is that while the Number 1 comedy in Canada still doesn't have a banner after five years (yet shows that died a quick and quiet death like Drive (four episodes), Smith (three episodes), and Heist (five episodes) all do), we at least have a picture! Way to go staff! It's small, it's non-clickable, but it's there! Maybe now that it's on in the States, it will finally get a banner. We can only hope.

Yoshida Brothers
""
Yoshida Kyodai (brothers) are simply amazing. They play shamisen, a traditional guitar-like Japanese instrument. This is the instrument that you would typically hear as the background music in a Japanese restaurant - the atonal discordant twanging of strings that usually, if paid attention to, just gets on one's nerves.

However, Yoshida Kyodai infuse new life into this artform. They play the shamisen, and they do traditional Japanese numbers, but they do them in a rock-style that will simply leave you astounded. The first time I heard them (on a music awards program in Japan), I was just amazed, and immediately began looking for their albums so that I could hear more.

My favourite piece of theirs is "Storm", from their first American release "Yoshida Brothers". The mixture of the woman's voice with their shamisen playing is haunting, and I could listen to this song for hours on end. Yoshida Kyodai have breathed new life into traditional Japanese music, and I highly recommend giving them a try!

Yellow Monkey Rock/Pop
""
The Yellow Monkey is a Japanese rock group, and I have a few of their albums, although not the one (and only one) that mp3.com has listed. I have "Punch Drunkard" and "So Alive", both of which are great albums. "Punch Drunkard" has some wonderful songs on it, both fast and slow, with two of my Yellow Monkey favourites: Love Love Show and BURN. "So Alive" is a live album, and includes many of their hits.

Yoshii Kazuya's voice is probably what I find most likeable about The Yellow Monkey. His voice has a slightly nasal tone, which is different from most other Japanese singers, and he puts a lot of emotion into his singing; if you don't understand the words, the emotion becomes paramount. He can convey sad longing in "Hanareruya" and frisky playfulness in "Love Love Show" with equal skill.

While living in Japan, many of my co-workers did not like Japanese pop music because of the bubblegum quality of it; however, when I would play The Yellow Monkey for them, they'd be pleasantly surprised - it's actually good music.

Vital Idol Billy Idol

Vital Idol is a compliation disc of Billy Idol's greatest hits. Billy was great in the mid-80s, and the songs have managed to last...or some of them have. And listening to them now, they still rock just as hard as they did when they first came out. Listen to this one loud, because that's how Billy Idol should always be listened to. Sneer along with the lyrics, and dance around the room.

Amiyumi
""
AmiYumi was the first release by Puffy (as they're known in Japan), and their first single from it "Asia no Junshin" propelled them into the limelight. It was a very catchy song, and lead the way for their string of hits that followed. This album has that song, as well as the follow-up hits, and they're all infectiously happy pop songs. Many of Puffy's songs are similar sounding, but at least it's a happy sound!

Smap Vest Smap

SMAP is the "New Kids On The Block" of Japan. They started out as six teenaged boys, brought together by Johnny's Entertainment. After a few years, one of the members left, and wasn't replaced, leaving SMAP as a five-some. However, they've managed to last quite a few years - they started out as young teens, and were still going strong by the time that they hit their late 20s and early 30s. And this is a 'greatest hits' compilation disc, so over the course of those many years, they actually had some good songs, and certainly more than a few catchy tunes. Their music managed to grow as they aged, so it's not all just syrupy bubblegum pop and ballads. They do a fairly good rendition of Yamazaki Masayoshi's "Celery" (although I still prefer the original), and most of their recent chart hits are also included on this disc. So if you want to hear what Japan is listening to, this disc would be a good place to find out.
