Favorite Video Games of the Decade: Part 4

Sorry for taking so long to finish up this list. But here is my favorite game of the decade. First off, a recap of 10-2:

10. Metal Gear Solid 4
9. Call of Duty 4
8. World of Goo
7. Grand Theft Auto IV
6. Valkyria Chronicles
5. God of War II
4. Mass Effect
3. Uncharted 2
2. Chrono Cross

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic

As stated in my thoughts on Mass Effect, Bioware are master storytellers. Take that talent and add in the Star Wars universe and you have KOTOR. But what's so great about the game is that you don't have to be a Star Wars fan to enjoy it. It's a well-crafted RPG with a riveting plot, an excellent cast of characters, and a fun combat system. Being a big Star Wars fan certainly doesn't hurt though. Using force powers and wielding a lightsaber is easily one of the most thrilling things I've ever done in a video game.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hope you enjoyed taking a look at my favorite video games of the decade. Happy holidays everyone!

I Need Writers: You Interested?

Hey everyone. I'm back at Georgetown starting my junior year which is gong well.

My websiteEntertainium.orglaunched last month pretty but we didn't have a constant stream of content. This has now changed. My friend Matt and I are the only principle writers but we are both putting out a lot of reviews every week for television shows.

Our plan is ambitious, to review the releases in the video game industry, movies, new albums, and every televisions episode as possible. It has taken a lot of work and I need your help.

Thus I am asking if anyone would like to write for the site. You can write pretty much whatever you want, but I am looking for video game content in particular. By signing up you will:

  • Have content up on an emerging entertainment site
  • Gain valuable experience from people who have written for major sites
  • Gain industry contacts
  • Eventually get paid

Other Immediate Perks:

  • Opportunities to go to game preview events for companies like THQ
  • Ability to attend to E3 next year
  • Free games and DLC in the coming months

If you are interested, post here, or email me at dougbuffone4488@hotmail.com . It would be helpful to include any writing samples as well as your name, age, location, which consoles you own and what you want to write about. I can't say that everyone will be accepted but I will do my best to give everyone a fair shot.

I would also love for you guys to listen to my podcast for the site, called The Byline(which you can download AND subscribe to through iTunes). You could also tell me what you think about the site.

Thanks and I look forward to your thoughts and your help!

-Doug

OMGZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ~! It's still here~! O.o

Guess who's back... back again... DP's back... tell a friend...

I can't believe that I still remember my bleemin' password to get into this here joint This blog is in serious need of some Martha Stewart magic, and not the type that will produce a poncho ^_^

Anyhoo, it's good to see the ol' place still around and kickin', so I'll start by askin'... how've y'all been!? O.o It's been, like, a while since I've written in here (understatements FTW~! ) Things have been kinda coo coo with me.

Last year I made the move to the big city, but due to the insanity of the last few months caused by the recession (having my hours cut from work = NOT FUN!), high rent that ate away at my chequing account, and the amount of money I owe on my taxes, I had little choice but to move back home with meh folks. That happened a couple of weeks ago at the end of July. My parents don't mind; they've been really cool about the whole thing (they were the ones who insisted that I come back home). So here I am, in my old room, plotting my revenge on the world with chocolate-covered tatter tots... er, I mean, figuring out how to get my massive amount of debt down and regrouping for my next assault on the real world Been hunting for another part time job, but so far no luck. I hope to find something soon, though... just don't know what T_T

As far as gaming goes... I haven't made much progress in that huge pile over there I call a backlog *stares at Mighty Mountain of Gaming* >_> I place the blame solely on Final Fantasy XI. OK, maybe my laziness played a bit of a role in it... but mostly FFXI. This is why I hate MMOs. They're such a time suck! You tell yourself that you'll play for, oh, 2 hours. next thing you know, you're growing hair in places you had no idea could grow hair and suffering from the worst case of halitosis the world has ever known.

So why am I still playing this thing!? Dang you, Squeenix! You and your little chocobo too!

But I digress... sorta I have been making more of an effort to play other games nowadays, but that mountain of games keeps growing ever so bigger. Times like this I could take an entire month off from work and do nothing but play games (of course, I can't afford to do that NOW, but t'would be nice nonetheless).

I can't think of anything else right now besides chocolate covered tatter tots... that's a sign that I should make myself scarce.

This is DP signing off. And remember: don't trust the Matrix Moogles

Toodles!

New Website: Hiztoria.com

Hiztoria.com is a new website that lets people share and discover anything and everything about websites. Rate, review, share, and talk about websites big and small. Hiztoria even has Gamespot in it's databse.

Blow some steam about this place.
Level 29 WTF When the hell did I get to level 29? GS is so weird now. I left right before the redesign and now there are widgets and useless junk everywhere. But then again it was much different when I first started here. The forums were just random boards and the only thing keeping people together in them was a locked thread of member's names. Oh yeah ,the background was blue. Times were simpler then and cross unions were not a problem. I must admit I had more fun at the Final Fantasy Legion than I ever did in any Union (except maybe HCU because we played online and fffu). I just wish I wasn't part of the reason why it was destroyed (not entirely my fault, but I was a poor mod and unions put the last nail in it's face)

I miss you guys, but not enough to come back because this place is a drug. It's true, this place is a drug. It is an addicting useless waste of time that satisfies simple interpersonal relations with people who share interests that I think is either too weird to talk too my normal friends about or too unknown for anyone to be as passionate about as me. But I would never want to talk to anime fans or avid video game players in real life because there personalities are shallow dull and predictably lame. Take no offense, but I probable would only like you guys half as much as I do if I were to meet you in real life. So that led me to a place like this and I found myself on the forums. I was posting a crap load and would wait for minutes just to get the reaction out of a person. But it really doesn't add up to anything. These levels are pretty pointless as does most posting unless it is over a topic with real substance and debate. And when I find a place of good debate, it only deteriorates into the same old off topic cheap jokes and nonsense.

So when I lost the back end of GS, the main part of the website was not there to keep me in and perhaps lure me back to the threads in the future. Once Jeff, Ryan, Brad, Alex, and Rich left, there was no reason to stay in GS because their personality alone is what set this site apart. Heck, if GS live was never created, I would never have been so involved in video games to even think about posting in a forum. So I decide to leave GS. I am lucky because Jeff, Ryan, Brad, and Vinny made a new website "GiantBomb.com". It really is a return to the simple, clean system I remember and loved. Plus, just being in the website is fun. It is a wiki site for everything video games and anyone is allow to add to it (once it goes through a mod). I can not only read about new games or talk about old, but I can also enlighten myself with interesting facts and help add to it myself. It is still a VG website, but I must admit that it is much more persistent than this place.

You can find me at giantbomb.com, username McQuinn
and playstation network with the same name McQuinn

If you ever wondered what I look like, here's a pic of me making a face.

Games I'm most looking forward to in '09
So it looks like 2009 will be a good year for gaming and already there are a few great titles that I'm really looking forward to. They all have the potential to be bona fide AAA games when they finally hit store shelves. They are (in no particular order):

1. Killzone 2 - PS3
2. Final Fantasy XIII - PS3/360
3. Resident Evil 5 - PS3/360
4. Scribblenauts - DS
5. The Conduit - Wii
6. Batman: Arkham Asylum - PS3/360
7. Saboteur - PS3/360
8. Sadness - Wii
9. Bioshock 2 - PS3/360
10. The unnamed Beatles project by the guys who made Rock Band - PS3/360/Wii

You can bet your ass that all of these games will be standouts on their platforms or in their genres. I'm predicting at least an 8.0 average on metacritic for all of these. Oh, and one final note: I'm basing this on Gamespot's listed release date; if it says a game is coming out in 2009, it could be on this list!

Evil Roomates
Momma always said"be careful who you make friends with." Well I've done it this time, some fine mess I have gotten myself into. She has even gone so for as to have someone threaten myself and my husband. Can you believe it? Probably not. The reality is none of you will never even begin to live with someone as lying, caniving, and as crazy as her behind is. I have never met someone with such a lack of common sense, and to make it worse she does nothing but make idle threats. I want to choke slam her, but that isn't the christian way. But praying for her is doing nothing, and being nothing sure as hell aint working either. She is supposed to be kicked out by January but that looking grimmer and grimmer. Something has to be done, cause I wont stand by while someone threatens my life. I have had enough. Think this is exciting, this is only my crazy roomate, just wait til I tell you about the rest of "a zoo" my life is.

Preordered Infinite Undiscovery

I preordered it a week ago and just went and got it from my local gamestop, I read the reviews on IGN and Gamespot and it doesn't look like they were very impressed with it... maybe i should have preordered Mercenaries 2 instead oh well at least the characters seem to be interesting.

Wish me luck...

I'm working on something where I will put all my skills to the test--my pride and joy as an individual. And in doing so, I hope I get at least some kind of recognition. Placing 1-100 will do it for me, and I don't care where I place...it's out of thousands of entries, so you can certainly see why I'd be happy anywhere in the top 100. Actually, there will be 1,001 winners...but I want in the top 100.

The deadline is May 15th. I don't feel nervous at all, but I have to step up the work because I only found out about the contest yesterday. Not to mention I have to mail the damn thing...>_> Luckily, though, I didn't have to start from scratch on this entry, so I have a slight advantage with time spent on it. All I need to do is edit and make it better to, well...make it better

The top ten winners will be notified October 20th and be listed in the December issue of the magazine the contest corresponds to.

The Grand Prize is $3,000! AND a trip to New York for three days and two nights, all expenses paid. Then there's actually a first place, and that's $1,000; second, $500; third, $250; fourth, $100; fifth, $50; then sixth through tenth, $25. The rest in the 100 get certificates honoring their accomplishment.

Above all, this specific blog entry to me is sort of like a landmark; I'm marking it for future reference, to see if my ambitions were rewarded in some way. Yet, I'd still be content knowing that I even bothered with the contest because I'm not the kind of person that bothers with such things.

And, who knows...if chance were to wrap itself around me, you all could very well "see" my project for yourselves I know I'm being obscure right now, but I still want you guys to wish me luck in my endeavor!

Oh, and I know what you're thinking: "Well, wouldn't it be wise to tell us what exactly the contest is!?" The answer is "Nah, not really." I don't want you guys to know until the time comes--and it will, whether I won or not. It's just that I don't like setting myself up for failure, you know? You're submitting something you worked really hard on and think it's great, and then when the time comes and you lose...kinda sucks telling those you were telling about the contest that you didn't win; then comes the personal failure and disgrace: This is your area! Why did you lose...? Which brings me to my next cliched point:

I'll be happy knowing I entered my work, regardless of my stance--winner or loser. Just because I'm thinking that, however, doesn't mean I don't want to win, because trust me...I do.

Well, wish me the best, guys...for me and my piece!

Random things plus Blog is fixed

Well for about almost 3 months I could not change anything in my blog on here for some add reason every time I would go and delete a link or add a new link to a image an Error messege would come up on the top of the browser saying the HTML is not well-formed something along those lines and nothing would happen. So out of the blue I went to change something in my blog to see if it was fixed and low and behold the problem has be resolved and can now change my blog again. As for other things that have been going on not to much working as usual and been mostly playing Devil May Cry 4 Awesome game if I do say so myself good instillation to the DMC series and thought the new character Nero is pretty cool and like the Devil Arm he possess. As for the Anime category not to much there have been getting the Death Note series as they been gradually coming out in stores to buy. I have the first 3 Vols along with the collectible figures I have Light, L, and Ryuk right now still in the boxes and the next coming out which is Vol. 4 is going to have Misa on the DVD cover and the character is Jealous which looks cool. The other I have started and plan on finishing is the Devil May Cry series..of course I had to pick up Vol. 1 of that and from what I seen in there it is going to be an awesome series and can't wait for Vol. 2 to hit shelves. Well I guess that is going to about do it for now thought I would share the situation I was having here, but very glad it has been resolved and fixed. Later Gamespotters.

Hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and that you will have a Happy New Year. I've haven't had time to get on lately. And I've been getting new games and have been busy playing them. Just got FFIII for the DS and have been spending a lot of time playing that.

Gamespot's Rating system (mainly dealing with Ratchet and Clank)
MisterEngilsh wrote:

After being initially ticked off by the contradiction riddled, lame excuse, half-baked, mentally deficient "review" shoved down our throats courtesy of one, Aaron Thomas, I decided it was time to move on. I never go to Gamespot.com for reviews anyways. I have a link on my toolbar directly to these forums so I don't have to look at the sorry attempt at a video game site. I have always hated Gamespot and their awful rating system, their biased reviewers and their lack of regard for any semblance of journalistic integrity, but a measly 7.5 for one of the best games of the year was not going to be the straw that broke the back of a camel that had died long ago.

I only wished that Gamespot had retracted the review or left it as is. The one thing I really didn't want to see was Gamespot trying to justify the blatantly BAD BAD BAD review with an even worse eplaination that seemed to destroy any credibility that they had been able to retain. By using the reasoning that they did, Gamespot has made all other reviews on this site a moot point. If a platformer, that in the review was said to be too varied with too much gameplay, was appealing to only a platform game fan, then a sports game should not have any mini games because it would no longer be appealing to casual fans. According to Gamespot, the only way to make a good game is to stick to the bare minimum because varying gameplay is gonna drive away the layperson.

Forget about the fact that millions casual gamers that aren't great at FPSs will find the online multiplayer aspect of Halo 3 (9.5) completely USELESS leaving you with a 6-8 hour campaign ripe with repetitive levels that have nothing new to offer. Forget about the fact that other than the 500,000 people in the US that watch hockey, it is a completely foreign entity in which they would have no interest in playing a video game (8.5) of. In fact, forget about that not everyone will like Gears of War (9.6), Bioshock (9.0), Orange Box (9.5) or any of the other million shooters that are in existence with little reason to be. The fact remains, according to Gamespot, the game is on the 360 and 90% of the time, that is enough to warrant a good score. None of this means anything because Aaron Thomas doesn't think that 99% of the gaming population will like platformers and doesn't want them to buy this game under false pretenses. The fact that Ratchet and Clank is amazingly deep, with rich, vibrant graphics, extremely fun, varied gameplay, an original sense of humor, means nothing because Aaron Thomas said so. And in this case Aaron "a little salt is all spice I can handle on my life" Thomas' word is that of the law around this place.

Argh this stupid follow up to that stupid review has only managed to make me mad again. Poor reviews don't normally anger me, but hypocracy and stupidity always will.

well... maybe i'll stay then... with some pretty cool news too!

i'll just switch between the two profiles

anyways, you guys know about the music videos i make. those 24, Kiefer and MGS ones. well i got this message from someone on youtube today;

Hi, Mel ~

I'm Jennifer, the web designer and webmistress at Corey Feldman's official NEW website, http://www.coreyfeldman.net./ The old coreyfeldman.COM is no longer his official site; it was snagged by a cybersquatter when the domain name lapsed by accident.

We saw your video on YouTube and really liked it! Your creativity in editing video and music together is original and inventive. We'd like to present it on Corey's website, with appropriate credit to you (either your real name or screen name).

As you may have heard, YouTube and other video sites are assailed on all sides with those who would like someone to pay for uploading videos. We all know where this is heading. So we want to make sure your video doesn't disappear into thin air if YouTube is forced to take down a lot of content.

If you're willing, we'd like you to mail (or email) us a DVD of your LOST BOYS tribute video at:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aK76Iv_4a4I

We have some YouTube videos presented on our site, such as trailers for Corey's movies, but some are fuzzy. If you have a good, clean version of one of Corey's trailers, we'd sure like to get better copies of those. Also, if you have any videos of Corey in concert, interview or appearance clips, McDonald's commercial and anything else you'd like to
share, we'd like to post them on the website.

Please e-mail me back with your okay, and I'll send you our mailing address.

Sincerely,

Jennifer Lac Kamp
Web Producer
jennifer@coreyfeldman.net

the videos been uploaded and sent to her of course

My yearly update.
Once again, great month. So, I've got another girlfriend. Cause, you know, in High School, things happen and you don't always work out with the old one. But thing is, I got a hair cut, and suddenly there were girls all over me. So I'll have to say this. That hair cut was one of the best things to ever happen to me....ever. Who knows if I will get anything else nice...although I have been eyeing a larger mem stick for my PSP which I bought over the summer with the money I got from building a new deck for my house...in which my job was to dig because the old deck was resting on the ground that no one else decided to dig. Yeah....fun.
