GS Unions

For some reason, I joined every union I was invited to join at GS. I finally realized that was ridiculous when I got an invitation to join a union I really wanted to join, but couldn't because I was already a member of as many unions as the system allows.

I guess I collected unions like some people collect socks or what have you. I've finally resigned from all but 5 of them. Maybe I'll actually have a chance to participate in some of them since I don't belong to so many of them now. I think that's part of the purpose of being a member anyway. Otherwise, what's the point really?

I sort of wish we had unions at tv.com. I think I'd be more likely to participate more often if I could get to them while I'm already here instead of having to log in at another site to do it.

Sadly, they took the BBC Programme Catalogue down permanently. That was a valuable resource for information. Hopefully, they incorporate the information they had there somewhere else on the BBC site. I still have a load of work to do on This is Your Life and I got a great deal of information for it from the catalogue. I did find another resource for some information, but it doesn't have as much. It's better than nothing, though.

Blackpool

I watched all six episodes of Blackpool yesterday. I loved it! It was very different, but well done. When it started, I was a bit nervous, though. The story was quite familiar and I wasn't sure that was going to be a good thing.

A show called Viva Laughlin aired here last year. Being a Hugh Jackman fan, I decided I'd give it a try even though I wasn't certain I'd like the concept. As it turned out, I didn't like the show. As a matter of fact I did what I consider suffering through all 3 of the episodes they aired here before it got canceled, but no matter how hard I tried, I just didn't like it. It wasn't the concept that I didn't like. I think they did a good job of interweaving the singing with the dialogue and I actually enjoyed that part of it. What bothered me were two of the main characters. I found Holden and Carlisle intolerable. Had they been presented differently, I think the show might have worked, but it's hard to gain an audience's attention when they don't want to watch the lead character. Carlisle was nearly as bad. Both characters came across as completely insensitive, unmoved by anything and abrasive. I've been annoyed by characters before, but I've never felt this way about them.

Fortunately, I realized very quickly that even though the story was the same, the show wasn't the same at all. I'm glad. While Holden isn't what I'd call a nice man and tends to be a bit of a jerk, I actually liked the character. David Morrissey was fantastic in the role. I hadn't seen him in anything before, but I'd like to see more of his work.

Not surprisingly, David Tennant didn't disappoint me either. I liked Carlisle so much that it bothered me when he did some unethical things. Initially, I wished they hadn't taken him there, but I ended up being ok with it.

I like Sarah Parish as well. I'd seen her in the ShakespeaRe-Told version of Much Ado About Nothing and really liked that. I'd also seen her in Doctor Who, but didn't realize it was her. Somehow, I just didn't make the connection with her name and she was wearing alien makeup, so I didn't recognize her.

I haven't watched Viva Blackpool yet. I read that it sort of ruined the series and I'm not quite ready to risk that yet, so I'm waiting for a few days before I watch it just in case I feel the same way about it.

Actors, Films, Television, etc...

Did you ever discover that something wasn't what you thought it was? I mean, you really believed in this thing, counted on it in fact, but all of a sudden, you realized how wrong you'd been about it. The revelation was like a slap in the face. You just sat there stunned wondering what was wrong with you for believing in this thing and why you thought it was real in the first place.

I think that's enough of the cryptic philosophical style musings for now, so I'll move on to the subject of television. Before I do that, I want to give a spoiler warning, though. I'm not using spoiler tags for some of the things I'm discussing since the episodes have already aired in the UK and the US. I don't think the tags function in the comments section, so you may see spoilers there as well as in the blog post itself. I just ask that you not post spoilers for episodes that have not aired in both the UK and the US yet. Thanks.

I found out about this a few weeks ago, but didn't have the urge to write a blog so I held onto it. I've heard that Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles has been picked up for a second season. I'm glad to hear it. I was hoping the show wouldn't end where they left it. We'll have a least 13 more episodes to enjoy and they're going to begin airing them during this year's Fall season rather than keeping the show as a mid-season replacement. I'm looking forward to it.

I loved the Torchwood finale. I thought it was very well done and I didn't see Tosh's death coming at all. I pretty well knew Owen was going to die because they'd been leading up to that, but Tosh's demise came out of the blue. I know some people didn't like the way it was handled, but I thought it was one of the best bits of television ever. I kept thinking she'd died. Then, I decided that she wasn't going to die. Finally, I knew she was when she smiled at Jack. I like it when a show keeps me guessing that way. The show's barely finished and I'm already missing. Now, I find myself eagerly awaiting official news about a third series of this show. I really hope they decide to make another one. Yes, I've heard all the rumors about it, but I hate to pin my hopes on anything until it's been officially announced.

Doctor Who started airing in the US two weeks ago. We had Voyage of the Damned the first week and Partners in Crime on Friday, so we're only one episode into it. I really love Donna, though. I know a lot of people are displeased, but I'm happy with the direction the show is taking. I find it refreshing that The Doctor has a companion who isn't in love with him. Not that I didn't like what they did before, but it's just nice to have something different. I also watched a load of older episodes on Netflix and I enjoyed that very much. I found that I truly love Tom Baker as The Doctor. Next to David Tennant, he's my favorite. I suppose I'm a bit odd when it comes to characters and the ones who are different from the rest are the ones who appeal to me the most. For me, that's part of what I find most appealing about Tom Baker's Doctor. I also love how he would pretend to be a simpleton when the situation called for it.

What else have I been doing? I've discovered some actors I really like and I've spent a bit of time catching up on some of their previous work. I know I'm late discovering them, but I guess it's better late than never.

I found out about Damian Lewis last Fall when I watched a new show called Life. I love the show and it's my favorite of the new shows that premiered last Fall. I'm so glad it will be returning. As a result of that, I wanted to see more of his work. It turns out that a dear friend of mine in the UK also likes him and she was kind enough to send me a pile of things to watch. I loved them all. I also rented quite a few more things he was in from Netflix. I've seen a decent sampling of his work and I think he can play any role. He's convincing as a good guy, a bad guy, a comedic guy, or a slightly eccentric guy. Not everyone can play so many different types of roles well.

The other actor is David Tennant. I know none of you saw that coming. Anyway, who knew I'd go from never having seen him in a thing to wanting to see everything he's done in just one month? I know I can't see everything since he's done quite a bit of theatre work, but you know what I mean. At any rate, I haven't been able to see as much as I'd hoped yet because much of it isn't available on DVD in the US and some hasn't even been released on television here yet. I'm hoping some of the more recent things that haven't aired here yet, will end up airing here soon, though. I really want to see Learners. It sounds like it's really good. I also like Jessica Hynes, so I think I'll enjoy it. I saw Casanova and I loved it. I probably shouldn't say this because I'm afraid to jinx it, but a very dear friend of mine bought me a copy of Blackpool and it's on the way to me now. It hasn't been released on DVD in the US and it only seems to have been aired once here. I can hardly wait to see it! Please don't post spoilers about it. I plan to blog about it after I've seen it, so if you can save the spoilers for that blog, I'd really appreciate it. Thank you in advance for that.

I guess that's enough for now, well more than enough really. I could probably say more, but I'll give your eyes a rest.

Terminator

I'm liking Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles a lot. I liked it from the beginning, but it keeps getting better. I think it's very well done and the actors are great. Summer Glau is doing a fabulous job as a terminator named Cameron. Naming her character that is a definite nod to James Cameron, by the way.

I've heard some criticism of Thomas Dekker as John Connor, but I'd have to disagree. I've been thinking that he's playing the role the way Eddie Furlong did in T2. After watching an interview that tv.com did with him at WonderCon, I know why. He said he's trying to play it that way. I think he's succeeding and it's coming off quite well.

I've also heard criticism of Lena Heady, but I don't agree with it either. I think she's also doing a fab job. I had already seen her in 300 so I knew she didn't have an American accent. I know it's not easy to be consistent and believable when using an accent that isn't your native one, but she does it. She makes it seem effortless as well. I also think she fits the role of Sarah Connor.

I'm impressed that the writers have taken great care in remaining true to the films. They care about not alienating the existing Terminator fans such as me. I'm not so picky that I mind if they stray a bit, but I do appreciate that they're trying to remain true enough to the original story that they don't disregard everything which has come before.

If you haven't watched it yet, I recommend it. The only down side is that the final two episodes of the season will air tomorrow and I haven't heard anything about it returning for a second season or not. I sure hope it gets renewed. There's really so much they can do with it and it's well written and well acted so it's a pleasure to watch it.

Doctor Who

I've finally gotten into this show. I don't know what took me so long. It really is very good. I love David Tennant. He's fantastic. So now, I have a load of catching up to do on it. Fortunately, everything seems to be available in the US, so I should be able to do that. I plan to start with 2005 for now. I would like to see the series before that time as well, though.

I've also been watching Torchwood. It's not as good as Doctor Who, but I like it. I plan to keep watching it.

Heh, so the strike actually served a really good purpose for me. I don't know that I'd have watch these two shows without it.

I'm really going to have a full television schedule once everything returns. I'll be watching something every night of the week.

I'm a girl. I just wanted to get that out of the way since my user name seems to confuse people (understandably so). I am a long time Crow fan and am the board op of The Crow Chamberoom (the official Crow forum of James O'Barr and Crow Fans Online). I am a web designer and my husband and I run our own Web Design business. My favorite show is Firefly and I'm proud to be a Browncoat. I'm a Nathan Fillion flan (not a typo), which is probably obvious from my profile. I also love all things Joss Whedon. Joss is boss.
