Monthly Blog: November 2009

Yes, I've noticed that I'm a horrible blogger, but now I know why: back when I used to write on this thing every few weeks or days, it was because I was busy not playing games! This will the final time I mention how much damn fun I've been having with my PS3, and even though recent holiday sales at numerous electronics stores have made me second-guess my timing, I don't actually regret buying my PS3 in April at $400 and my TV at quite a bit more, even though there's a PS3 with triple the HDD space for $50 less. The last six months have been insane game-wise and I really can't wait to see what 2010 delivers. I'm just gonna let my brain spew things for a while and I'm sure I'll miss things, but hey, whatever.

-I'm horrible at playing games I buy. I guess I got used to having to play a game in three days or read a book in a week when I was a kid, because despite the fact that there is no time limit with GameAccess.ca, I feel that I have to play a rented game and only that game until it's done. I bought inFamous in June, Bioshock in August and Uncharted 2 in October, and I've played those three for a combined total of maybe two or three hours, and that's just for inFamous: I've installed but not played Bioshock and I haven't even unwrappd UC2 yet! My 2 most recent rentals were Uncharted 1 and Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection, and I only rented SUGA for a fairly easy Platinum trophy because I was so disheartened with being unable to to it in Uncharted ('Crushing' difficulty in that game is a very appropriate name). But now I'm done with SUGA and the game I want next is on reserve, so I'm forcing myself to play games I actually own until it's available. Speaking of which...

-...Batman: Arkham Asylum is a contender for my personal "Best Game of 2009 That Was Actually Released in 2009." I remember downloading the demo and my friend and I must have played it five or six times before we both marched over to my computer to pre-order our own copies. It took three weeks after release for Future Shop to finally send mine, but it was worth the wait. I won't go too much into Arkham Asylum's awesomeness, but to relate to my previous point Batman was a game I actually had to make myself play: if I wasn't trying to get all the trophies in Uncharted, I was doing homework that I hated, and left Batman to languish but for the fact that two other friends were playing it at the same time and I wanted to talk about it with them. I played it in three chunks and just beat it a few days ago, and during my Christmas break from school I really want to go back and do all the Riddler challenges.

-I'm still a massive whore for music games. Guitar Heros Would Tour, Metallica, Smash Hits and 5 sit next to Rock Band 2 and The Beatles: Rock Band on the shelf, and at the moment I have eight megabytes short of six gigabytes of Rock Band downloadable content on my PS3 HDD. I love them, I love to feeling of playing them while feeling shamelessly pathetic, I love creating avatars of myself and my friends to play our favourite songs with, and they're also fairly generous with their Trophy support. I also fell in love with the PSP version; Rock Band: Unplugged is extremely fun and the Rock Band aesthetic makes a fairly dissimilar method of playing music familiar and fun. However, for the past two weeks there has been no downloadable content (444 MB and counting), and while I'm annoyed at Harmonix for stopping it what bugs me more is that they won't announce RBU's death. I understand why they would kill it off, and you hear the same argument every time an MMO's death is announced: it simply makes no sense to keep something going if there's no money being made in it. But even though I'd keep buying songs in RBU, if the quality of future DLC stays at the level it's been at maybe it should die. Just don't toy with us and announce it already, HMX.

-The Japanese Bayonetta demo is flat-out the most ludicrous demo I have ever played, and I'm certain I'll be buying it on Day 1. Yes, a good amount of it has to do wth the sexy protagonist, but the gameplay reminds me so much of God of War and Devil May Cry that I feel like it would be a horrible thing to miss this game. Besides, sexy female protagonists have made me play games before that I thought would be bad but turned out pretty good (P.N.03 for example).

-Prince of Persia: The Movie: The Game? What the hell is this? I personally loved the 2008 Prince of Persia and anyone who whines that not 'dying' made it too easy didn't get it: a game like PoP with insane acrobatics and landscapes flows a hell of a lot better if you aren't being forced to press "Restart" every fifteen seconds or, for that matter, if you're too afraid to try a jump because you've run out of sand, as I did so many times in The Sands of Time. The Two Thrones ended that story full circle, so what on earth could this be? Are they re-making The Sands of Time? Could it be an alternate sequel, ignoring Warrior Within? Whatever it is, I hope this is temporary and the story of the Nathan Drake Prince and Elika will continue at some point, even if it's another epilogue. Give those of us who actually like that game something, Ubisoft!

Oh man oh man. What is going on? - Modern Warfare 2?

Alright first of all, I would like to say sorry to everyone for inactivity! XD. I have been way too busy with school (I'm a high school and part-time college student XD). Plus Golf (Varsity baby ;D) has taken up a good part of September - October...but guess what? Season is over so now I'm free .

On to the topic, I'm sure all of you have heard of, or saw the leaked footage from Modern Warfare 2 right? Well yeah I'm gonna be talking about that. If you haven't seen it, good luck in finding it. Activision is really cracking the whip on finding all of the videos that are scattered over the internet. I'm sure you can find a torrent if you are really that desperate.

Ok, so please don't scroll down if you don't want spoilers xD.

SPOILERS

As those of you who know about the video, or have seen it, it's very...well disturbing. I was quite shocked when I viewed the video for the first time. Rubbed my eyes because I could not believe what I was seeing. I mean...you playing as a...TERRORIST?...killing civilians? That is just a bit too far there Activision. Way to promote terrorism to little kids ALL OVER THE DAMN WORLD. It's a little too traumatic. America is still sensitive to the whole "terrorist" subject. 9/11 attacks, school shootings, etc. The media (especially Jack Thompson type people) is all over this. The majority of the people throwing a hissy fit are the people who are un-informed. That is completely understandable because they do not know much about the game itself. You're a CIA agent going undercover as a Russian Terrorist, and you shoot up a ton of civilians in an airport. It is pretty gruesome and disturbing. The footage was pretty shocking to watch...just imagining kids all around the world saying "hey guys! look what I'm doing! Shooting up random defenseless people muwahahaha I'm a terrorist!". Watching a cutscene isn't as bad as a completely interactive shoutout with defenseless civilians. It's just absurd. Hopefully it won't promote these kinds of acts in kids, or any other player of the game. There is a possibility for that...which is why it shouldn't even be in the game in the first place. There are too many people out there that could be hurt by this, more than the people that would enjoy this. It's a little too hurtful...

But on the other hand...I can totally see why Activision decided to include this into the game. It builds a whole new level of emotion to the game. The level has a much bigger impact on you compared to the alternate solution, a cutscene. It's almost like the difference between watching a clip on the news, and actually being there. It's a whole different kind of feeling that you get. And seriously, the game is rated "Mature' for MATURE PEOPLE....YEAH THAT'S RIGHT YOU LITTLE 12 YEAR OLDS! If a 12 year old kid can't comprehend that it's a game then he's obviously not mature enough. Everyone who is treating this whole thing as a negative part of the game is a little too sensitive. Yeah it's a touchy subject but if you don't want to see it just choose "skip" when it prompts you to. It's the same as if you don't want to go eat Chinese food, yet you walk straight into a Chinese restaurant and complain. Parents are just over reacting. There are far worse things then an undercover CIA agent (yeah he's a good guy....so it's not like you're really playing as a terrorist ). I honestly believe GTA is far worse but I just think the media needs something to b*$%@ and moan about right now.

And besides those two paragraphs....how in the hell did they all bring two guns each, into a high security level airport? I mean what the hell is that? There must be some idiot guard on duty. "Um sir, is that a machine gun you got there?" "Oh no officer, it's just my tennis racquet..." "Oh, okay! =D"

Well that's just my two cents. What's yours?

Borderlands, Uncharted and MORE! (More you say, I guess Ill click here)

Today was the day that I beat Borderlands. It was a bit bitter sweet, I got the satisfaction of knowing that I did it all by myself, but I was bitter about the fact that my friend who moved to New York has become a total douche and refused to respond to my messages to play. What can I do though?

The game itself was solid, but the GS review was dead on, it gets lonely alone. The gameplay was much like fallout 3, but it had a personality all its own, and I think thats really what sucked me in. The robots, all of them named "clap trap" (what does that mean? Sounds like that girl I was with tonight.) were probably my favorite characters. They were goofy, they danced and honesly you will probably wish they were real just so you could hug one. The other characters are more or less the cookie cutter models. You have the mad doctor Zed, the sleezy gun merch and a couple of hicks in between there.

Anyways, it was good, you should check it out if you get the chance. Next was Uncharted 2, and just like the first I was absolutely stunned. It was beautiful, it was fun, and the story was great. The game did a really good job of sucking me in. I literally couldn't put the controller down, so I ended up beating it in 2 sittings or so, but I'll tell you first hand it was worth every dollar. It took me about 11 hours to beat it on very hard, which may not be a really long game, but there are tons of goodies to go back and earn (cheats, models, videos, tweaks, etc.)

Third, Ratchet and Clank: Search for Booty is very meh. I love ratchet and clank, its honestly been one of my favorite franchises since I first played it the Christmas it came out (and took me completely by surprise). However, this was obviously a cheap sony cash in. The last game, Future, ended in a cliff hanger, and the only way to find out what happens is to play this expansion type thing. Its honesly boring, I am trying to finish it to be prepared for CIT but its really hard. It all seems to take place on one planet, and its all very linear. You also get your guns, rather than buying them.

Finally, I am a huge supporter of this game, for the love of god get demons souls, I payed $70 for it and let me tell you it was the best $70 I've ever put on a counter. The game is beautiful in every sense, and completely unforgettable. Nintendo and Konami should take some notes on this one, because I'll never see games like this the same way again, so if the next Zelda and Castlevania games aren't this incredible, I'll feel a bit jaded. All I can do is ask that you please try this game, but it really might change your view on the industry as well, this is what an incredible game looks and plays like.

So there are my quick reviews. To conclude:

Borderlands - buy

Uncharted 2 - buy

Ratchet and Clank: Search for Booty - I'll say pass, but I haven't completed it yet.

Demons souls - GOD DAMN IT BUY THIS GAME!

For those of you who are bored enough to care...

Okay, so it seems like I've had a fair amount of free time lately, so I'll be making more frequent posts... Or at least I'll be reading a lot more posts since I really don't post all that often....you get the point (I hope). Anyways, I guess I should talk about some videogames here since I really haven't said much about that lately... Umm... Oblivion for the 360 is reaaalllllyyyyyyyy (emphasis on the yyyy) fun. I hope it'll hold me over for quite some time since I have to ration my videogame spending because I want to save up for a Wii... And without a job, that's kind of hard. Umm....I bought a PSP recently, along with Me and My Katamari and Daxter. Katamari is pretty fun, but I'm starting to get tired of it, and Daxter is moving along kinda slowly, so I'm sort of starting to regret the purchase. Oh well, nothing I can do about that now. I've been trying to convince my parents to buy my younger brother a DS Lite so that he'll stop using mine...it gets really annoying haveing to clean off the screen all the time. My dad's begining to realize how outdated our PC is (he's thinks that just because he updated it 3 years ago it's still top of the line), so I sense an upgrade in my future. I think that pretty much covers everything going on right now, so I guess I'll wrap this up now. Oh, if you have an iPod, you should subscribe to The Hotspot podcast...for a while there it was my only source for videogame news, and it was pretty substantial... Who knew that in an hour you could get most of the details about what's going on? So yeah. Goodbye, now.

WADDA MEAN I'M GONNA NEED A NEW PS2!?! (caps)

So I just found the probelm to my broken PS2 and I might need to get a new one altogether! I JUST GOT IT 6 MONTHS AGO!!! And when i tried to talk to Sony about getting it fixed I got some really horrible customer service. Sony is really starting to piss me off. For some reason they just won't seem to cooperate.
