Demon Days Gorillaz
""
Demon Days is the Gorillaz' masterpiece. Dangermouse and the Gorillaz join seamlessly here to create a work that, while strange, dark, yet intriguing, redefines music for the 00's.
When I first heard this album, I was shocked. Some of the tracks, mixing funk, rap, rock, and just about every other genre out there, simply make you do a doubletake, or several in my case. Much like Queen, the Gorillaz are one-of-a-kind musicians; what other band can literally say it's animated? The Gorillaz are all about self-expression; they obviously don't care what the world thinks of them, they just do their own thing. It's great that we have artists today who don't simply conform to the standard ice-cube/dre G rap or the disney-channel-actor-turned-pop-star C-rap. Music is art; great artists think outside the box.
That said, this album is an adventure, to say the least. Their music is much like their cartoons, dark and eerie. However, their social messages come across clear (i.e. "Kids With Guns"). At first, this album is a little off-setting. However, it soon grows on you to the point where you really appreciate its genius. The next Bob Dylan? Perhaps. A revolution? Definitely. 5 stars.
