I don't know anything about Mixed Martial Arts, but...

I love the UFC 2009 Undisputed Demo.

Probably it is because of the graphics, the atmosphere, the animations, the detail of the characters, the realism... but this is one of those demos that can keep me playing for hours.

I don't know if I will buy the game. I didn't have so many games still to play and so few time available, I would consider buying it. However, the demo was a great surprise.

The Forgotten Storm and Natural Disaster, 1974 Tornado Outbreak

While many Hurricanes are remembered as the top storms of recent memory in the minds of many Americans, it is important to not forget, there were other storms that were just as deadly, if not more, like today is the Anniversary of the 1974 Tornado Outbreak considered by many to be the worst Tornado outbreak in US History

While many of you reading this blog were not born when this storm hit, if you live in an area that was effected by it, ask your family members about it, they will have an interesting story to share about it with you

I live in Dayton Ohio and 15 miles to the East of me, the worst Tornado out of all of these hits and it looked like somebody had dropped 10000 Bombs on the place, that is how bad it was

Here are some links that recall this Tragic Event

Yet another 360 bites the dust

Man, I'm beginning to lose track here. But anyone who has read my previous blog posts in regards to the hardware issues with the 360 will know that I will not be getting another one at this point.

I'm not even going to rant & rave, I've done that before & I'm pretty much completely over it at this point. My PS3, Wii & HP Blackbird PC pretty much guarantee that my gaming needs will be more than satisfied without having to worry about subpar hardware & horrible customer service with the 360. Good riddance to bad rubbish...

Ubuntu 7.10 First Impressions

Some people who have seen me posting in the forums may be aware and others may not be, but I've been pretty happily using Ubuntu since May of this year.

The reason I say pretty happily instead of just happily is there were a few issues that I have had with it on 7.04 and these issues, along with my curiousity had me trying other distributions. However by now I think I can safely say having tried Dream, Mepis, PCLInux OS, OpenSuse, Elive and a few other distributions that I'll be sticking to Ubuntu for the foreseeable future.

Thankfully Ubuntu continues to prove that decision was the right one. Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon released today (or rather, yesterday at this point) and after spending ten hours doing a network download (T1 and a 24kbps average download speed) I've got the new release and I've been testing it out for a few hours here.

The most immediate and noticable difference for me is simply the monitor resolution, while previously I could use a widescreen resolution it hardly took advantage of the monitor I have (Acer AL1916W) and only allowed for me to go up to 1024x768, this has been fixed. Merely go to System>Administration>Screens and Graphics and select your monitor's manufacturer and the model.

Screens and Graphics

Then you have to log out, but after logging back in you can select any resolution you like. In my case I selected 1440x900 (my max resolution) but it offered resolutions from 320x240 all the way up to 1600x1200 for me. The Screens and Graphics utility also offers support for configuring dual-monitors and graphics cards, however I'm going to have to leave judging that up to somebody else.

So many models are supported it would probably take as many words as there are in this blog posting to list them all, so you should probably find that yours is supported. Overall its a great utility and solves one of the long-standing criticisms of Linux (and my primary reason for refusing to try PCLinuxOS further).

The other new thing, or rather consolidated feature that I've taken advantage of so far is the Appearance Preferences, this is a great little utility that helps clean up some of the menu clutter from 7.04 Feisty and makes configuring your themes and other settings much quicker and simpler. Instead of having seperate tools for themes, backgrounds, fonts, menus and toolbars, and desktop effects (compiz) this simple utility consolidates them all in one place.

Appearance Preferences

Theres not too much to say about this, it does exactly what I've explained it does and little more but it is a welcome improvement nonetheless and makes things more user-friendly. One item of interest actually did appear to me though, previously on 7.04 there didn't seem to be an easy way to delete customized themes, this has also been fixed.

Unfortunately right now I can't give a solid opinion on the new 3D desktop (which is enabled by default in this version) because it breaks the chrome when I turn it on, this is most likely an effect of the somewhat unusual network update I ran and the fact that my 7.04 install was far from clean to begin with. When the servers stop getting thrashed in about a week I'll burn a CD and give some updated thoughts here.

Aside from these changes there is now plug and play support for WPA-encrypted WiFi and numerous other changes that you may or may not find useful such as fast-user switching, a much improved desktop search (deskbar), pdf printing and AppArmor security software. Still some long-standing issues remain like setting up DVD playback and the relative dearth of native games support remain, but given enough time these problems will hopefully work themselves out.

Once I've had the time to more thoroughly try out the new version and form better impressions I'll try to post updated thoughts on Ubuntu 7.10, but for the time being just rest assured that this is very likely the most intuitive and painless LInux distribution you'll ever have the option of using, and perhaps the easiest to use and best overall operating system as well.

Graphics are everything.

Graphics have always been the main factor in innovation. he next time you think otherwise try playing a game with your eyes closed...the picture on your screen has even dictated gameplay...for example..the N64 controller came about when graphics shifted from 2D to 3D. The D-Pad wasn't enough anymore and a shift was made. Even motion sensing can lend thanks to graphics...afterall if we didnt see the graphics it would be worthless....
