"Thirteen-year-old Derek Whitehead of Scottsdale entered the festival contest for the first time with his almost two-minute film, "I Ain't Afraid of No Cat."

He heard about it from a neighbor who encouraged him to enter. Derek, who will be an eighth grader in the fall at Desert Canyon Middle School, has been making films as a hobby since he was just 5 years old. His entry, shot with a small handheld camera, is a comedy about his 2-year-old cat, Ally.

"My cat is kind of evil and always attacks me. I thought it would be good in a film. It took me about three hours to film and about an hour to edit it, after having my parents and sister watch it and give me advise about it," Derek said.
He's hopeful that he'll win an award but said the experience helped him learn some new cool camera techniques and how to train animals. He recommends and encourages other kids to participate in future festivals, which he intends to do, also."
