Today Off The Spot

Finally.

I knew I would grow tired of this place and decide to leave, or get banned without actively trying. I'm surprised I'm not banned already, but instead it has led to this. I don't want to continue doing this anymore.

I am leaving GameSpot permanently.

To put it simply, I'm sick of it. I'm sick of the site telling me that it's my fault there are HTML errors. I'm sick of pointless moderations. I'm sick of the same threads being reposted every month and I'm sick of the waves of old threads being bumped.

James Kozanecki sent me a private message at the start of this month. Part of it reads:

kozanecki wrote:
We noticed that you've been moderated a fair bit lately and under the Terms of Service you're rapidly approaching a ban. You're a great forum poster and it would be a shame to lose you, so try to keep it clean and above board.

Yeah well screw that. Lose me. I don't want to be a GameSpot forum poster anymore, and I won't let moderators have the satisfaction of moderating me anymore or banning me. I am clean. I am above board, but GameSpot's moderation system is flawed and doesn't allow for the least bit of fun, joke or innuendo. I will no longer subject myself to this virtual prison.

There isn't even a reason outside of the forum to visit this website and hasn't been for years. The news is always a day late, the reviews are late and the video content is bland.

This website is no longer relevant and has no reason to be visited.

So there's my reasoning. No real surprises there, but why exactly have I chosen to leave on the 22nd of September?

Before being a regular at GameSpot I used to post very frequently on a wrestling forum at wrestling.net.au. As seen by this screenshot taken before the forum was relaunched, I made nearly 6000 posts there! However after having enough of one moderator on the team who had hated me ever since I signed up I decided I would leave. I did so, on the 22/09/2007. The exact same date I registered there in 2003. Now I'm going to do it again. Same date, same signature, and just like last time I will never return. Even after writing this the similarities continued with one of my last threads on GameSpot being closed just like on the wrestling forum.

As for where I'm going next, I don't feel like writing anything on the internet for a while. I want to sit back, wind down, reflect, forget and refresh. I want to rid my mind of the evil of the past before moving on to something better.

But it wasn't all bad. The most important part of this website for me were the same people who read my posts and blog entries throughout the years. You. Your personalities, forum posts, blog posts, Community Games Nights and Pick-up threads kept me coming back all these years and I thank all those who gave me a laugh. You all know who you are!

And... I guess that is it.

It's time for me to stop. What you're reading now is the last thing I'll ever do on GameSpot before signing out for eternity. Time to walk away from almost 100 blog entries, over 1000 users tracking me, over 11000 profile views and over 12000 posts. It may be drastic, but this is something I feel I need to do and it's in my best interests that I say... Goodbye!

And then, there was nothing.

Man it's going differently without you here - and I agree 100% with your points - the moderation and erroneous HTML coding here is stupid! Well, at least we will still see on twitter.

Where ever you dwell next, have fun!

Damn. Well I guess all good things must come to an end. You're one of the very first people I remember seeing on here and liking, so it's really a shame we have to lose you. I can't say I'm surprised though, and with the way things are, I find it very unlikely you'll be the last to go out in this way.
It was nice knowing you, we'll catch up on Live some time aye.

Its going to be a big loss for the forums. You're one of the people that held the place together. You'll be missed. We need more people like you, but unfortunately we don't. You were certainly unique. Enjoy whatever you go on to do.

I'm really sad to see you go I really liked you as a poster but I'm also really impressed that you're taking this stand so well done Still...sad times :'( I hope the mods feel really guilty bad and change errr it could happen right?

:'( I hoped you were bluffing.

I don't think there would be a single moderator that takes satisfaction in moderating a good contributor. I disagree with your comments about the site's rules - I find them to be lenient enough so I can enjoy myself, yet strict enough to keep me shielded from the filth that the rest of the net contains. But as for your tech issues and dissatisfaction with site content - I can appreciate your comments. I have no doubts this will continue to improve and I know you can post within the site's rules, so hopefully you'll reconsider one day and join us in the AU forum again. See you around.

Well, I still hope you aren't serious about leaving. It would be a shame to lose you.

It's really sad to see you go man, I always considered you a key part in what makes GSAU so enjoyable. Like you I only really use the forum on the site as well, and yes the rules are a bit tougher then I'd like but I can see why they're in place.

Good luck in all your future endeavours sir, it's been a privilege to have known you. If you do for whatever reason decide to get a PS3 one day be sure to add me as a friend, and if I ever decide to cave and pay what Microsoft wants for a 360 wireless adaptor, I'll be sure to add you.

I can kinda sympathize. Though it's more of "I do a lot of my own forum work than anything else", which is turning me off Gamespot. That, and a steady combination of real life, finding a real job, and getting frustrated at the insane amount of technical issues that should've been fixed and fixed years ago. See you around dude. Though I must thank you for the shout out.

I literally am choking up here. You being one of the first dudes here I got to like and I think one of my first "friends" With your great insightful and hilarious posts. I do however agree with some of the points in your post, and I think that there is a time where you have to stop doing this sort of thing, but you will be sorely missed. See you later man, enjoy your.... other stuff.

From Freek666: I wish you all the best in the future and I was glad I could tie for winner of your blackboard. Sorry that I can't post this personally for I am currently suspended (I can feel your pain brother). Once again, all the best to you and enjoy life.

At least you quit while you were ahead Me, I'm gonna ride it out until the banhammer crushes my virtual skull. I realised this month that I don't care about this place as much as I used to... in fact I hardly care at all. All the good users I have on Twitter and/or MSN, so there's nothing keeping me here except boredom. Hehe, actually I can't wait... I have a revelation or two up my sleeve that I shall only reveal upon my banning (via a from-the-grave forum post)

We certainly have been through quite a bit over the last couple of years. I agree 100% with the things you said but unfortunately they will never change on GS and i too have contemplated leaving in the past, though will just stay around to help keep the GS board going with the other regulars.

I am sure we will still keep in contact though Live in the near future.

Even though your not going to read this I still want to wish you good luck and have fun.
