Doctor Who, Buffy, Scrubs, R.E.M.

Wow, I'm impressed with myself. This semi-regular blogging thing's working for me again . Sooo, we've had a few more Doctor Who eps, the seventh season of Scrubs concluded with an episode meant to be broadcast earlier in the run so it made no sense, I dug out some Buffy DVDs and started getting addicted to that again whilst I should be revising for my GCSEs..., and I'm gonna start reviewing albums, starting with Accelerate by R.E.M.

Doctor Who

Is it just me or does anyone else think this is the weakest series so far? Basically every week I've felt the show's become predictable, not particularly exciting, and Catherine Tate, no matter how good people say she is, reminds me of one of her sketchshow characters. Anyway, these two have been better than the ones before.

The Doctor's Daughter - I sighed when the Doctor was cloned, cos it just robs the show of most of the real father-daughter drama. She's kinda his daughter, but she's a clone...not an ACTUAL daughter. Apart from that, this was pretty good. The Hath look quite cool, and the Doctor's shouty speech at the conclusion is good (if a bit reminiscient of the one in The Christmas Invasion). Martha doesn't get a whole lot to do though, which is odd, and Donna noticing the dates seems like it's been tacked on to make her look clever. So, Jenny's out there...yet another character set to retrun at the end of the series, maybe? 8/10

The Unicorn and the Wasp - I enjoyed this episode more than any other this series. Mainly because it was so daft. The wavey lines for the flashbacks, the Doctor miming to Donna what he needed to expel the cyanide from his body, the sheer ludicrousness of the villain being a giant wasp. All very silly, and also quite enjoyable. The plot's not the best, but it made me laugh and kept me watching far more than Partners in Crime and Planet of the Ood did. Not the best episode so far in terms of drama and all that stuff, but the one that's been the most FUN. 8.5/10

Buffy

Once More, With Feeling - just brilliant from beginning to end. Although the songs are the main talking point here, what I think is just as great are the plot developments, such as Tara finding out Willow's been messing with her memory, and Buffy revealing to her friends they dragged her out of heaven. Anthony Head and James Marsters are great singers, and their songs are probably the best, but none of them are bad. There are also some very funny moments and lines here ("So that's it, you've just come to pump me for information? / What else would I want to pump you for?"). One of the best Buffy eps. 10/10

Hush - a great concept for a show. Everyone gets their voices stolen, so mime and writing on cards become commonplace. The scene where Giles explains what's going on is hilarious, and the Gentlemen are both terrifying and very, very funny. 9/5/10

Something Blue - Willow's grief over breaking up with Oz is very well portrayed, as is her friends' reactions to dealing with her. But the spell she casts, causing all sorts of mayhem is what stands out as being one of the funniest things in Buffy. Giles trying to get drunk to drown out the sounds of Buffy and Spike kissing, and all that stuff is great. One of the highlights of Season 4. 8/10

Restless - my all time favourite episode of Buffy. A whole episode of dreaming, basically, leading to some incredibly weird, and some very funny images, while also delving deeper into the characters. Giles's song is great, and there are some truly memorable lines ("We need to build a fort. / I'll get some pillows"). 10/10

Scrubs

It's painful to see one of my favourite shows sink to a low quality, especially when it's been so good for six series. Season 7 ended with an episode set mainly in a fairytale land, as Dr Cox tells his son a bedtime story. The trouble is, it's not really very funny, so everything ends up looking weird for no reason. If this show returns for an unconfirmed eighth series, it needs a strong linking plot and some decent jokes, two things this series has been decidedly lacking in.

Music

R.E.M. - Accelerate

Yeah, I know they're an old band, and most of my friends say "R.E.M.? Oh, my mum likes them!" but I don't care, I like them . This is their recently released fourteenth studio album. One of the most aggressive, fastest, and definitely shortest thing they have put out in all their years of music making. 11 mostly short, biting rock songs with crashing guitars and well-written lyrics. Here's a link to the two singles so far from the album. The first, Supernatural Superserious features some very loud guitars , while the other, Hollow Man, has a nice combination of guitar and piano.

i thought it was good how the doctor was able to connect to his daughter, even if she was just some form of dna manipulation... it was very touching.
the unicorn and the wasp was very cheesey LOL... but had some great one liners - my favourite was Donna: Typical, all the decent men are on the other bus. then, completely serious the doctor says "or timelords"... that one just cracked me up! after the cyanide scene i though it went downhill though... the alien wasps and inquisitions were a little weird, but still enjoyable... it was better than i was expecting!
some great buffy episodes... hush is the only episode that has really scared me... those guys are just so creepy. i really need to rewatch those again
and R.E.M.... classic... can't go wrong with them!

I think the fact that is was DNA manipulation makes it better for a father/daughter relationship... Ok, so there not a back story so you meet Jenny at the same time as The Doctor meets her, but I think accepting her as his daughter was a nice way to look at things... if it had been a reunion show, we would have had a good hour of catching up... Well, probably not, but skipping over the catching up would have made it sound false so I quite like the way they did it.

I'm a big Agatha Christie fan so I was looking forward to this one . I did think it would be cheesy and it was, but it was good fun too. I guess half of it was having all the references and getting them , it wasn't the "mystery" because that I had figured out in the first minute of actually meeting everyone (I had the wasp the second we met the person...). I am enjoying Donna, I have never seen Catherine's sketch show so that might be why... but I don't think so, I like her tart repartee . Oh... and we got a kiss? Why did I think that would happened before the end of the series? Even if it was a 'save your life, shock you to death' thing... still it was a kiss .

I do agree about this series being not up to the others... but I am enjoying it all the same . Sorry, if my comment on The Unicorn and The Wasp are a little disjointed, I am still making them, I only saw the epi once for now (like that's gonna change before the end of the day ).

OMG, REM is old? God, you know how to make a girl feel like a grand-mother . I really loved them when I was a teen, I am gonna listen to their new stuff when I've slept a little more... now, that my kitten Pertwee has finished running all over the house... Really, giving a Doctor's name to a cat is inviting the running all over the house... I expect to find a small yellow car sometimes when I come back from work.

Sorry I apologise lol, they're not that old . I think cats should drive cars, the world would be a far better place . Yeah, there's always a doctor-companion kiss now, it's getting a bit tired. Thanks for your comments , you too alison_974

As for Scrubs, that episode wasnt supposed to be a series or even season finale. Bill Lawrence said that NBC wouldnt give them a "proper" series finale and just picked the fairy tale episode and marketed it as the series finale. The episode should have just been a normal epiosde (thats why Kelso was at the hospital even though he'd retired, the episode was before that) But I'll agree it wasn't the best episode they've done.

Yeah I know. The intended last episode, the one shown before My Princess, was much better. Would've made a fine series finale in my opinion, but oh well.

I loved The Doctor's Daughter and The Unicorn And The Wasp but you're right to voice your own concerns.

I haven't seen any of Scrubs' seventh season yet. I've been hearing way too many bad things.

You don't have my cat... excited like he is I feel a lot of people would have tire tracks on them (he jumps on people).

Ah okay, maybe not then . Or perhaps the introduction of a cat driving test? lol.

I thought Season 7 was pretty good, much better than 6. Still didn't compete with 1-5, but it was pretty good.

Love OMWF, Hush isn't my favorite but it's great, I looove Something Blue, and Restless is a good episode.

Poor, poor Scrubs. It was a great comedy for five great seasons and then during season 6 is started to slip, things were still good but by the time it returned for season 7 it had just lost all it's good qualities.

Wow - this is even more regular than me now!

I think this DW series is a bit...well...average. Every episode is just average - I don't think there are any great episodes, or any terrible episodes. Just...average.

How are the exams going?
