Please Turn Left (and get on with it)

Hello, hello. A shorter blog this time, just about Doctor Who. Only two more left, and they're looking rather good, with Russel T Davies playing 'how much can we shove into two episodes before they explode?!' But anyway, we've still got all that to come.

Silence in the Library - superb casting, great CGI, a typically brilliant script from Moffat. What more could you ask for? Of course, it's not perfect. The Data Ghost scene goes on a bit (although it is necessary for setting up the later scares) and the cliffhanger is just a lot of shouting (with an obvious resolution) but you can't have everything. Vashta Nerada must be the best name for anything ever... 9/10

Forest of the Dead - Faster paced than the first part and generally a much more exciting episode. Donna's virtual life provides a nice secondary plot (watch Doctor Moon's funny facial expressions! he's hilarious!) and the cast continue to impress. Tennant and Alex Kingston are amazing in their scenes together - provided with great dialogue (and imagery) - 'you watch us run', the Doctor opening the TARDIS by snapping his fingers, etc. River's 'death' scene is the best bit, almost topped by the Doctor's final run to save her. Just brilliant. 10/10

Midnight - a pleasingly decent script from Russel T Davies, who is not among my favourite writers for this series. There's no escaping the fact that this is filler, but if you accept that, it's very enjoyable. The cast are all good, but it is Tennant who holds this together in the weaker moments - such as the repeating stuff going on too long. Some people are gonna find this tedious, as it's basically some people in a box shouting at each other, but I didn't, really. Better than I expected, 7/10

Turn Left - Rose is back, hooray! Thank god, cos without Billie Piper this episode would have fizzled out completey. Catherine Tate isn't bad as an actress, and she just about carries it off, but the story's not exactly interesting...more like a clipshow of series 3 and 4, or a 'best of RTD' episode, with a bit of ATMOS thrown in for good measure. The pre-titles scenes are great, and the last five minutes are amazing, it's just a bit stodgy and uninteresting in between. I just felt the whole thing was fairly pointless, especially as everything looks so good next week. Ah well. The trailer...wow. Should be good. 6/10

Please post comments! We can argue about which ones are good and which ones aren't

Don't watch Doctor Who so I guess I'll just say hey.

It must be an age thing...because I thought Tatey was absolutely fantastic; she really held it together. (And I never really "got" her "comedy" either.) It's a better peformance that David Tennant has managed this series - not that he's been given a platform.

That said there's always something wrong with an RTD episide - this one felt "lumpy". And, as always, his characters are superficial, with all the depth of a fridge magnet. But I can't see how he could have avoided revisiting all those past episodes.

Hey SMGslayer
a_spod, I agree - I think the way Turn Left unfolded was pretty unavoidable and RTD didn't have a lot of choice in how to write it. I think Moffat would have handled writing that particular one better though, he always seems to write characters with more depth.

So can I ask and I might be remembering this wrong but didn't your start up a whole new account awhile back and said something like you were abandoning this one for that one. Or am I remembering this wrong?

I'd forgotten about that... I changed my mind, after actually setting it up. I'm weird .

That may be why you made this one private...

Because I set up another account or cos I'm weird? I think I set it on private ages ago and forgot about it when I posted on my blog again.

I'll say like Ash... but would anybody believe if I said I didn't watch DW? (ummm, just gave myself away by calling it DW, didn't I? ).

I really liked the two-parters, second part more... I'm really getting into Donna and not just because I'm Catherine's editor, it took me a long while to like her, but I'm there now . I just thought her parallel life was the best bit about those two episode .

Midnight... Wow, I'm so glad that they did something different for the double booking this year, instead of having an episode without the Doctor and his companion, we get to episode with one missing . I loved Midnight, I mean it was very good, the atmosphere was great. Lesley was marvelous (didn't find too much repetition) and David... David blew my mind, he was just... the words are not coming .

Oh... I just watched Turn Left and I screamed, I cried (yes, Martha dead... OMG!) and I completely disagree with you, I LOVED THIS ONE!!!! I guess it does help that I thought Catherine was mind blowing (hey, if I say it of David, I will say if of Catherine!!!) and I think the problem with a lot of British (sorry, not an insult, but I've seen that argument come up more than once) is that you know her for her comedy and it is hard to see her as a dramatic actress (see the movies, she's done a lot of drama), I do not know her for her comedy so I can totally buy Donna and I think I'm lucky for that.

So we don't agree... let's argue?

Be good.

I agree with you, I think the main problem I have with Catherine Tate is that I watched every episode of her sketchshow. I think she's pretty funny - the show went downhill at the end, but it was okay. And now, everytime I watch Doctor Who, I hear her various sketchshow characters come through when she speaks. I think she's occasionally very funny in Doctor Who, being given quite a lot of funny stuff to say, but she's stronger as an actress when given serious material, played straight and not for laughs. Like in Forest of the Dead, she was great when given the emotional story of losing her virtual children. I'll rewatch Turn Left soon and see if my opinion improves on a second viewing

The one turn I really enjoyed in Turn Left that I didn't mention if the mom just going downhill... I think it's pretty courageous of an actress to make herself look unattractive like that.

I'm glad you agree with my little theory about Catherine... Actually, it's not the first time I serve it and people have all agreed that's that their problem with Donna/Catherine.
