Monthly Blog: November 2009

Yes, I've noticed that I'm a horrible blogger, but now I know why: back when I used to write on this thing every few weeks or days, it was because I was busy not playing games! This will the final time I mention how much damn fun I've been having with my PS3, and even though recent holiday sales at numerous electronics stores have made me second-guess my timing, I don't actually regret buying my PS3 in April at $400 and my TV at quite a bit more, even though there's a PS3 with triple the HDD space for $50 less. The last six months have been insane game-wise and I really can't wait to see what 2010 delivers. I'm just gonna let my brain spew things for a while and I'm sure I'll miss things, but hey, whatever.

-I'm horrible at playing games I buy. I guess I got used to having to play a game in three days or read a book in a week when I was a kid, because despite the fact that there is no time limit with GameAccess.ca, I feel that I have to play a rented game and only that game until it's done. I bought inFamous in June, Bioshock in August and Uncharted 2 in October, and I've played those three for a combined total of maybe two or three hours, and that's just for inFamous: I've installed but not played Bioshock and I haven't even unwrappd UC2 yet! My 2 most recent rentals were Uncharted 1 and Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection, and I only rented SUGA for a fairly easy Platinum trophy because I was so disheartened with being unable to to it in Uncharted ('Crushing' difficulty in that game is a very appropriate name). But now I'm done with SUGA and the game I want next is on reserve, so I'm forcing myself to play games I actually own until it's available. Speaking of which...

-...Batman: Arkham Asylum is a contender for my personal "Best Game of 2009 That Was Actually Released in 2009." I remember downloading the demo and my friend and I must have played it five or six times before we both marched over to my computer to pre-order our own copies. It took three weeks after release for Future Shop to finally send mine, but it was worth the wait. I won't go too much into Arkham Asylum's awesomeness, but to relate to my previous point Batman was a game I actually had to make myself play: if I wasn't trying to get all the trophies in Uncharted, I was doing homework that I hated, and left Batman to languish but for the fact that two other friends were playing it at the same time and I wanted to talk about it with them. I played it in three chunks and just beat it a few days ago, and during my Christmas break from school I really want to go back and do all the Riddler challenges.

-I'm still a massive whore for music games. Guitar Heros Would Tour, Metallica, Smash Hits and 5 sit next to Rock Band 2 and The Beatles: Rock Band on the shelf, and at the moment I have eight megabytes short of six gigabytes of Rock Band downloadable content on my PS3 HDD. I love them, I love to feeling of playing them while feeling shamelessly pathetic, I love creating avatars of myself and my friends to play our favourite songs with, and they're also fairly generous with their Trophy support. I also fell in love with the PSP version; Rock Band: Unplugged is extremely fun and the Rock Band aesthetic makes a fairly dissimilar method of playing music familiar and fun. However, for the past two weeks there has been no downloadable content (444 MB and counting), and while I'm annoyed at Harmonix for stopping it what bugs me more is that they won't announce RBU's death. I understand why they would kill it off, and you hear the same argument every time an MMO's death is announced: it simply makes no sense to keep something going if there's no money being made in it. But even though I'd keep buying songs in RBU, if the quality of future DLC stays at the level it's been at maybe it should die. Just don't toy with us and announce it already, HMX.

-The Japanese Bayonetta demo is flat-out the most ludicrous demo I have ever played, and I'm certain I'll be buying it on Day 1. Yes, a good amount of it has to do wth the sexy protagonist, but the gameplay reminds me so much of God of War and Devil May Cry that I feel like it would be a horrible thing to miss this game. Besides, sexy female protagonists have made me play games before that I thought would be bad but turned out pretty good (P.N.03 for example).

-Prince of Persia: The Movie: The Game? What the hell is this? I personally loved the 2008 Prince of Persia and anyone who whines that not 'dying' made it too easy didn't get it: a game like PoP with insane acrobatics and landscapes flows a hell of a lot better if you aren't being forced to press "Restart" every fifteen seconds or, for that matter, if you're too afraid to try a jump because you've run out of sand, as I did so many times in The Sands of Time. The Two Thrones ended that story full circle, so what on earth could this be? Are they re-making The Sands of Time? Could it be an alternate sequel, ignoring Warrior Within? Whatever it is, I hope this is temporary and the story of the Nathan Drake Prince and Elika will continue at some point, even if it's another epilogue. Give those of us who actually like that game something, Ubisoft!

Black 4 Border 2
Ah, it's that time for Americans to do their economic/capitalistic duty and shop. I bought Left 4 Dead 2 from GameStop for $30 which is the same price I got Left 4 Dead for. I can't wait to install it and play around with the new melee weapons. Also, Borderlands was on sale at Amazon for $20. I couldn't pass on a first-person loot shooter for that price. Now, I just have to wait for it to arrive.

Last Tuesday I bought...

Nostalgia from Gamestop. I also preordered Sin & Punishment 2.

Then I went to a store in my area called Cash in Culture. They have tons of videogames from 2600 through todays consoles. I saw about 40 NES games their most were $5.99 except the ones in the glass case those were up to $14.99. But I bought 1 SNES game (Hyperzone) and by sister bought 1 Genesis game (Mortal Kombat II), and 4 SNES games (Sim City, Street Fighter II, Wrestlemania The Arcade Game, and WWF Royal Rumble)

Next time I go to that store I'm plan on buying a SEGA Saturn since it is $49.99 their.

This Generation Will Endure
360 and PS3 have a lot of life left in them. With focus on gameplay, online play, and less on improving graphics, I think both systems will last longer than the standard 5 years. In the 90s, everyone wanted better and better graphics, so companies were obsessed with making the next best thing. Now, games have evolved past that (like movies have evolved past CGI showcases), and gamers want new ideas, good stories, and originality). Those can all be achieved with these systems. Yes, I'd like a 360 that plays Blu Ray, or a Wii that has a Hard Drive and HDMI, but it would be the same system.

There is really no reason to upgrade because with connection to a network and updating, these systems naturally have a longer life than past systems. I think it's a really good thing. No reason to spend close to $1000 on another system and tons of peripherals, when these systems are doing great, and have a longer life because they are connected to WWW and can be expanded. Plus, it's even less desirable in this economy, to have to worry about upgrading. Even if an upgrade did become available, it would have less games, less features, and most importantly, less users and therefore less community, right off the bat! Mix that with the fact that less people would be buying due to a bad economy, and it could be a real disaster. In previous generations I always found myself asking for more, this is the first generation I can honestly say I'm pretty satisfied. I think this generation will probably last as long as the NES did, if not longer. Mainly because, again, the fact that they are connected to the net allows for more room for expansion, and a much longer life.

What do you think? With advances in gameplay, original ideas, story, and less focus on purely technical upgrading, do you really think we need an upgrade in 2010, or even 2011? Or are you satisfied with the way things are?

Diss on me!

I went down a level. Diss!

So yeah, new news. Just got a DSi. They're sick, no matter what anyone tries to tell me. They're so sleek and nice looking now and it just feels like the DS is worth more than just playing DS games. Internet, pictures, music, apps, it's all such a nice upgrade for the portable.

I'll be playin' GTA:CW (trying to get online with it, but I need to mess with the security settings on my router. Damn DSi can't connect to it lol)

Also, been playin' a lot of WoW, got my Warrior and my Paladin to 80. That game's gettin old as hell though...

what are your thoughts about the wide thing
This new gamespot thing is a bit funky. I am just not used to it and dont really care too much for it. I am not on a lot like I used to be so I dont know how long it is going to take for me to get used to it. So do you like it or is it a no go for you?

My game backlog, TOO MANY!

So ever since about the time Halo 3 came out I have had at least 3 games in my backlog that I need to play/finish in some way shape or form. Not just multiplayer but single player. Well just because I haven't posted in a while (partly because of this backlog) are are the games that are keeping me from really getting into my newly acquired Burnout Paradise (yeah I know I ripped the demo).

Half Life 2, HL Ep.1, HL 2 Ep. 2 (Orange Box): Well I beat Portal (twice) but I'm still trudging my way through Half Life 2 and haven't even looked at the episodes. Only abuot half way through the game. Luckily the Episodes are apparently kinda short.

Condemned (Yes the first one): Shortly before the Christmas rush (see previous blogs) I made the decision that I needed More games to play and ended up buying Condemned. Good game but needless to say CoD4 pushed it to the back burner. I'm about 2/3 through this one.

[ THE HALOZ HAXORS!!!

Halo 3: Yes I beat it, yes I played a bunch of multiplayer but I'm still on my way through Legendary, probably a few more hours give of take a few friends helping.

No silly WWII pitures to be found...go figure.

Call of Duty 3: I got this for free when I got CoD4 but I just haven't had the urge to go back to WWII after seeing the glory that is CoD4. This might have to wait until the summer lul.

Beautiful Katamri: I got this thanks to one of the Amazon deals of the day. I LOVED the first one and my wife really wanted it too (also ACHIEVEMENT POINTS!) I don't know I'm not really allowed to play this one till she beats it so it'll probably be a while before I get to this one.

Wii: Yeah I have a Wii but it hasn't been getting a lot of play time as of late, aside from a recent Warioware run. I still haven't even seen Mario Galaxy and I can't imagine trying to take on Smash Bros. at this point.

Anyway what's in your backlog?

Got The Job!

So I got Indigo Prophecy on Sunday...

It's very different.  Some of the little "Simon"-esque sequences can be too long, but the story-driven gameply has me hooked.  I am about 90% of the way through my first playthrough, and so far this game is looking at an 8/10 from me.  Hopefully that will rise on consecutive playthroughs, as I am going to do everything in the exact opposite way I did before, just so I can see exactly how much the game changes based on your decisions.  If it doesn't change much, then I have to admit that I probably won't play it through again.  But, if it varies greatly, then more playthroughs are sure to come.

Let me know if you know anything about how much IP can change, and let me know what you thought of the game.  If you've played it, that is.

If this doesn't make you play Doom 3/ROE Quake 4 again I don't know what will.
Link
Let me start off by saying I loved Doom 3/ROE and Quake 4 by all means but it just wasn't what I think everyone expected. I played through it 2 times normal and nightmare mode and I still think this game is incredible it stands as the best engine by the best programmer imo.

I will also say if you have a 6800,1Gig,P43.2ghz/AMD 64 3000+ By all means get this game right now you can get it anywhere for $13 or less same goes Resurrection of Evil but Quake 4 will run about $30. I also played that game twice once again amazing game.

The website I linked you to is amazing they have taken Quake 4 Doom 3/ROE and turned them into much better games imo.
Pick what game you want to mod then you'll have 3 choices Basic just slight graphical adjustments for slower PC's. The average which has even more lighting a crazy effects mid PC. And the full blown GTX mod which has new textures sounds and full graphical improvment high end PC's only though or you will suffer greatly.

it makes all of these game much brighter and funner to play and just feels like it should instead of randomly shooting into the night your now shooting at monsters :. Here are some of the changes that have been implimented into this mod.Bloom Shaders,Parrallax Mapping,Real Metal ext,Self Shadows,Weapon Reflection,Distance Grow,Simple effects like sparks, and Wall floor reflections this game is worth playing one more time for me and for some there first time hope you like it enjoy
