Game creativity and some other thoughs on the game industry. Rant 2

Well a few months back I posted about game creativity in the industry and how it was lacking.

Unfortunately it still is, but a lot of good games are on the horizon that may change that, it seems developers are taking the standard ideas that have worked the last few years and are tweaking them and adding in a bit of creativity.

Now we don't have all out creativity, but some is better then none.Ea Chicago with Def Jam is adding a couple of new ideas that seem interesting and they may just work and make the game funnier to play. Other games Devs are taking similar paths and adding on to existing franchises but with new fresh ideas that for the most part seem interesting.

The Wii and Nintendo was my main focus last time, so I felt it was necessary to refer back to that topic in this post as well.

The Wii from my play time with it seems like if the games are done right its a lot of fun and is a nice direction to go in with the controller.

At this point though most devs aren't touching on using the controller for the wii correctly and most games because of this feel gimmickky and are in no way fun.

When I picked up my Wii I unfortunately was expecting a lot from the controller and devs to use it in proper ways to make new interesting games and bring a fresh feel to old games that have been done over and over. While for the most part the Nintendo games have done this, (Zelda being great and an instant classic in my mind)( wario ware being fun and ridiculous) most of the other games by other devs just don't have that feeling and its very unfortunate and I hope this changes as devs get used to the wii and its controller.

Right now though I don't think that is going to happen for the most part.

I have this feeling that the majority of games from other devs for the wii are going to feel gimmickky this entire generation because they just aren't taking the time to get a correct feel for the controller and as we all know that is the most important part of the wii.

Don't get me wrong here, I think some games from other devs are going to great and a lot of fun I just don't think that is going to be the case a lot of the time.

Now on too the other systems, I definitely think at this point the motion control in the ps3 controller is complete gimmick and thats very unfortunate and I hope it changes in the next few months with a lot of good titles coming out for the ps3. Lets hope that they pull that one off as well.

For the 360 nothing to talk about in the terms of innovation with the interface of the controller and most games for it are of your standard fare but there are a few interesting ones on the horizon, mass effect and fable 2 to name a few.

I how ever love what MS is doing with live and the arcade feature. A lot of the arcade games are innovative and otherwise would have never seen the light of day. I also like how they have given us gamers the chance to make our own games and put them up on live arcade. That alone will open up the flood gate for arcade and the innovation with the arcade titles.

I just have this feeling that while the industry is successful and that is great. The industry is taking one step forward in innovation on games and two steps backwards at the same time.

Let me explain, Yes the wii is innovative, yes the arcade features is great with the ps3 and awesome on the 360.

Yes, a lot of games are adding new exciting and innovative features to there games, But unfortunately most games aren't and most games are rehashes and the same old same.

That might be fine and dandy for most, but what brought me to gaming was those fun innovative titles we used to play on the Genesis and Snes and so on.

Now it feels as if I play one game in one genre Ive play all the games in that genre and that is a true shame.

The really sad part about this all is that its our faults. While most of us complain about innovation in the industry we never buy the innovative games. Look at Okami and psychonauts for examples, both exceptionally great games that were innovative, but none of us bought them.

Shame on us gamers for complaining then not acting on out complaints. Unfortunately it seems because of us not buying these games and others of there kind, that most devs aren't making them anymore.

This is unfortunate and all our fault as a whole.

Game creativity rant

Is it just me or are games in general just starting to be more of the same ol same old. Every year we have a couple of titles that push the boundary's of creativity, but not nearly enough in my opinion, though lets face it we as gamers are the ones who are truly to blame. We keep on wanting our favorite characters over and over in the same atmosphere, are we as gamers really the ones that are stifling creativity in the gaming world. Why do we want more halo when we could have another FPS just as good and more innovating but not with halo in it. Gamers in general need to take a look at their collection and give some of the better more unique games a chance instead of going after just the next GTA of halo. Maybe then and only then will we get a gaming world full of bright new ips with fresh ideas.

Lets give congrats to Nintendo for at least trying something new and fresh and giving the same games we've been playing for the last 10 years a new feel. Lets hope others follow in Nintendo's footsteps and we get a next gen full of fresh ideas and new looks.
